Chapter 5 - The Promise Cesare Broke

"Who gave you that?"

Cesare stood in the doorway of the hidden room.

His face was different.

Not the face of a powerful man.

Not the face of a mafia boss.

The face of someone who had just seen the one thing he feared most.

I held the letter tighter.

"You wrote this."

He didn't move.

"Elena."

"You wrote this fifteen years ago."

My voice became quieter.

"Why?"

Cesare looked at the letter in my hand.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he stepped inside and closed the hidden door behind him.

That action alone made my heart race.

Because Cesare Bellante was a man who controlled every situation.

But right now, he looked like a man trapped inside one.

"How did you find this room?"

I stared at him.

"That's your first question?"

"No."

He looked away.

"My first question is why you opened something that was never supposed to be found."

The words hurt.

Not because he was angry.

Because he sounded afraid.

I held up the letter.

"You wrote to me before I even knew who you were."

Cesare closed his eyes briefly.

"I was hoping you would never read it."

"Why?"

"Because if you read it, it meant I failed."

I didn't understand.

"Failed at what?"

His silence returned.

The same silence that had followed me since the day I met him.

The same silence that surrounded my entire life.

I stepped closer.

"I need the truth."

Cesare looked at me.

And this time, he didn't avoid my eyes.

"Your mother asked me to make a promise."

My fingers tightened around the paper.

"What promise?"

"That if something happened to her, I would protect you."

I shook my head.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's the truth."

"No."

My voice cracked.

"It's only part of the truth."

Cesare didn't argue.

That told me I was right.

"You knew my mother."

"Yes."

"You knew she was in danger."

"Yes."

"You knew I was being watched."

"Yes."

I stared at him.

"Then why didn't you tell me anything?"

His expression changed.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

"Because the people who wanted your mother gone believed she left behind something important."

I frowned.

"What?"

Cesare looked toward the old box.

"Information."

"What kind of information?"

"The kind that can destroy powerful people."

I felt a chill.

"Was that why my mother disappeared?"

Cesare didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Your mother didn't disappear."

I froze.

"What?"

"She ran."

The room became silent.

"She ran from someone."

"Who?"

Cesare looked at the letter.

"Someone inside my family."

My heart dropped.

The Bellantes.

The family he belonged to.

The family whose name controlled an entire city.

I stepped back.

"You mean someone close to you tried to hurt her?"

Cesare nodded.

"And that's why I couldn't tell you."

I laughed softly.

"You couldn't tell me because you were protecting me from your own family?"

"Yes."

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn't make me feel better.

Because suddenly, I understood something.

Cesare wasn't hiding a secret.

He was hiding a war.

A war that started before I was born.

I looked down at the letter again.

There was another page folded inside.

I hadn't noticed it before.

I opened it.

Cesare immediately reacted.

"Elena."

Too late.

The second page was already in my hands.

The handwriting was different.

Not Cesare's.

My mother's.

My breathing stopped.

The first line said:

"Cesare, if Elena ever discovers the truth, it means I am no longer able to protect her."

I kept reading.

"Do not let her believe she was abandoned."

My vision blurred.

"She was loved."

I closed my eyes.

Because those were words I had wanted to hear my entire life.

My mother didn't leave me.

She didn't forget me.

She didn't choose a life without me.

She had been trying to protect me.

But then I saw the final sentence.

And everything changed.

"Tell Elena the truth about her father before the Bellantes do."

I looked up.

"My father?"

Cesare went completely still.

I knew immediately.

He knew.

"You know who my father is."

His silence was the answer.

"Tell me."

"Elena..."

"Tell me."

The hidden room suddenly felt smaller.

Cesare looked like he was fighting himself.

Finally, he whispered:

"Your father was someone your mother wanted you to forget."

"Who?"

He looked at me.

And before he could answer, the hidden room lights suddenly flickered.

A loud sound came from upstairs.

A crash.

Cesare immediately turned.

His entire body changed.

The softness disappeared.

The danger returned.

"What happened?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled me behind him.

"Stay here."

"Cesare."

"Elena, listen to me."

His voice was serious.

"If anything happens, you run."

I stared at him.

"I am not running from my own life anymore."

For a moment, he looked at me.

Then something in his expression softened.

Like he understood.

But before he could say anything, the security alarm started.

Not the normal alarm.

A silent one.

The kind only Cesare and his closest people knew existed.

Someone had entered the mansion.

Someone who had bypassed every security system.

Cesare grabbed his phone.

One message appeared.

From his head of security.

"Someone accessed the old family archives."

Cesare's face changed.

"What?"

I looked at him.

"What are the family archives?"

He didn't answer.

Because another message arrived.

This time with a picture.

Cesare opened it.

Then he stopped breathing.

I watched his eyes move across the screen.

Fear.

Real fear.

"What is it?"

Slowly, he turned the phone toward me.

The picture showed a room.

An old room.

A room inside this mansion.

And in the center was a woman sitting in a chair.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that face.

Even though I had never met her.

It was the woman from the hidden photograph.

The woman holding me as a baby.

My mother.

Alive.

The message below the picture contained only one sentence.

"She has been waiting fifteen years for her daughter to come home."

I looked at Cesare.

He was already moving toward the exit.

"Where is she?"

He stopped.

Because a second message appeared.

And this one was from my mother.

"Cesare, if Elena is with you, don't let her open the door."

I looked toward the hallway.

The hallway leading to the old archives.

The place someone had just entered.

Then I heard a sound.

A lock turning.

From the other side of the hidden door.

May you like

Someone was opening it.

And a woman's voice whispered my name.
