Chapter 2 - The Woman Hidden in Cesare's Past

I stood outside Cesare Bellante's office, listening to the voice of a stranger say my name.
"Elena wasn't supposed to know yet."
My hand remained on the door handle.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
The words weren't loud.
They didn't need to be.
They carried the kind of weight that made my stomach tighten.
I had spent the entire night convincing myself that the photograph was a misunderstanding.
A forgotten memory.
A piece of Cesare's past that had nothing to do with me.
But hearing those words changed everything.
Someone inside knew about the photograph.
Someone knew I had found it.
And someone was waiting for me to react.
I pushed the door open.
The first thing I saw was Cesare standing behind his desk.
The second thing I saw was the woman sitting across from him.
She was older.
Elegant.
Dressed in a dark green suit with perfectly styled silver hair.
Her expression was calm, but her eyes changed the moment she saw me.
Like she had been expecting me.
Cesare immediately turned.
"Elena."
The way he said my name was different.
Not like a husband.
Like a man who had just realized he couldn't protect someone anymore.
I stepped inside.
"Who is she?"
Neither of them answered.
That silence told me more than words could.
I looked at Cesare.
"You said nothing was fake."
His jaw tightened.
"It isn't."
"Then why does everyone keep hiding things from me?"
The older woman slowly stood.
"Because the truth around Cesare Bellante has always hurt innocent people."
I looked at her.
"And who are you?"
She hesitated.
Then she answered.
"Lucia Bellante."
The name meant something.
I had heard it before.
Cesare's mother.
The woman who had disappeared from public life years ago.
The woman many people believed had abandoned the Bellante family.
I looked between them.
"You know about the picture."
Lucia's expression became serious.
"Yes."
"Who is the woman beside Cesare?"
The room became quiet.
Cesare looked away.
That was the first time I saw him avoid a question.
And somehow, that scared me more than anything else.
"Elena," he said softly, "this is not something we should discuss like this."
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn't believe him.
"You married me in front of two hundred people."
My voice became colder.
"You made me stand beside you while everyone believed I was some kind of arrangement."
I held up the photograph.
"And now I find this, and suddenly I'm not allowed to ask questions?"
Cesare walked toward me.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like I was something fragile.
But I wasn't.
Not anymore.
"Tell me the truth."
He stopped.
Lucia looked at her son.
For a few seconds, they communicated without speaking.
Finally, Cesare took a breath.
"The woman in the picture was Sofia."
I waited.
"Who was Sofia?"
His eyes lowered.
"Someone my family destroyed."
The answer surprised me.
Because I expected something else.
A former lover.
An enemy.
A betrayal.
Not regret.
"Was she your girlfriend?"
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly.
I noticed.
"Then what was she?"
Cesare looked at the photograph in my hand.
"She was someone who helped me survive."
I didn't understand.
But before I could ask, Lucia interrupted.
"Years ago, before Cesare became the man everyone fears, he trusted someone inside his own family."
Her voice was quiet.
"That trust almost killed him."
I looked at Cesare.
The man standing in front of me suddenly felt different.
The powerful mafia boss everyone feared disappeared for a moment.
I saw a younger man.
Someone who had been hurt.
Someone who had learned not to trust anyone.
"What happened to Sofia?"
Nobody answered.
That was when I knew.
Something terrible had happened.
Cesare moved closer.
"She disappeared."
"Disappeared?"
"Everyone thought she was dead."
The room felt colder.
"Everyone?"
Cesare looked at Lucia.
"Except the person responsible."
I stared at him.
"You think someone in your family killed her?"
His silence was enough.
I took a step back.
I had known Cesare's world was dangerous.
But I had never understood how deep it went.
This wasn't about money.
Or power.
Or business.
This was about secrets.
And people who were willing to destroy anyone who discovered them.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
I sat near the window of the bedroom that was supposed to become ours.
Supposed to.
That word kept repeating in my mind.
Everything about this marriage felt like a question.
The ceremony.
The contract.
The way Cesare looked at me.
The way he protected me.
I didn't know what was real anymore.
Around midnight, I heard the bedroom door open.
I turned.
Cesare stood there.
No suit.
No intimidating expression.
Just a tired man.
"You should be sleeping."
I looked away.
"You should be telling me the truth."
He walked inside.
"I am."
"Not all of it."
He didn't deny it.
That hurt more.
He sat across from me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
"When I first saw you, I knew you were different."
I looked at him.
"That sounds like something people say before asking someone to sign a contract."
A small sadness crossed his face.
"I didn't choose you because you were useful."
"Then why?"
He was silent.
Too silent.
Finally, he answered.
"Because someone was trying to make you disappear."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
Cesare reached into his pocket and placed a file on the table.
My name was written on the cover.
ELENA ROSSI.
I stared at it.
"I found this two weeks before I met you."
I opened it.
Inside were photographs of me.
Walking to work.
Leaving my apartment.
Buying coffee.
Someone had been watching me.
For how long?
I couldn't breathe.
"Who was following me?"
Cesare's expression hardened.
"That's what I have been trying to find out."
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"And you still married me?"
He looked directly into my eyes.
"Because becoming my wife was the only way I could protect you."
I stared at him.
The answer should have made me angry.
Instead, it confused me.
Because for the first time, I believed him.
Not because he said the right words.
Because his eyes looked like someone carrying a burden alone.
But then I noticed something.
A small mark on the corner of the file.
A symbol.
The same symbol that appeared on the back of the old photograph.
My fingers froze.
"Cesare."
He followed my gaze.
His expression changed instantly.
"Where did you see that?"
I pointed at the symbol.
"The photograph."
The color drained from his face.
"Elena, listen to me carefully."
His voice became urgent.
"Who gave you that photograph?"
I didn't answer.
Because I suddenly remembered.
The black envelope.
The handwriting.
The fact that someone wanted me to find it.
Someone wanted me to question Cesare.
Before I could speak, my phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"Ask your husband why he let Sofia die."
My hands went cold.
Cesare saw the message.
And for the first time since I met him...
He looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not powerful.
Afraid.
"Give me the phone."
I held it tighter.
"Who sent this?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked toward the hallway.
Like he heard something.
Then the lights in the entire house went out.
The room fell into darkness.
A few seconds passed.
Then we heard a sound.
A door opening downstairs.
Cesare immediately stood.
"Stay behind me."
I had never heard fear in his voice before.
Until now.
He reached for the hidden weapon inside the drawer.
I followed him toward the hallway.
Then a voice echoed from the entrance.
A voice Cesare recognized.
His face changed.
Because the person standing downstairs was someone who was supposed to be dead.
Cesare stepped forward.
May you like
And whispered one name.
"Sofia..."
