Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind the Woman Who Returned

The voice came from the other side of the hidden door.

"Elena."

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had never heard it before.

But somehow, my heart recognized it.

Cesare stood in front of me.

His body was tense.

His eyes were fixed on the door.

"Don't open it."

His voice was low.

Almost a warning.

But I couldn't move.

For fifteen years, I had believed my mother was gone.

For fifteen years, I had carried a memory of a woman who would never come back.

And now she was on the other side of a door.

Alive.

Waiting for me.

"Cesare..."

He looked at me.

There was pain in his eyes.

"Elena, please."

That was the first time he had ever asked me for something.

Not as a mafia boss.

Not as my husband.

As a man who was afraid.

But I had spent my entire life waiting for answers.

I reached for the handle.

And opened the door.

The woman standing there looked exactly like the photograph.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Her eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Elena."

I couldn't breathe.

The woman I had imagined a thousand times in my dreams was standing in front of me.

The woman I had cried for.

The woman I thought had abandoned me.

My mother.

I wanted to run toward her.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask why.

Why did you leave me?

Why did you let me believe you were dead?

Why did I grow up without you?

But my body didn't move.

Because too many questions were trapped inside my chest.

My mother took one step forward.

"I know you hate me."

My eyes filled with tears.

"I don't know what I feel."

It was the most honest answer I could give.

She nodded.

"I deserve that."

Cesare remained silent behind me.

Watching.

Protecting.

Still hiding something.

I looked at him.

"Did you know she was here?"

He didn't answer immediately.

My mother looked at him.

"Cesare wanted to tell you."

I turned back.

"But he didn't."

She lowered her eyes.

"Because I asked him not to."

That shocked me.

"You asked him?"

My mother nodded.

"I was not hiding from you."

She looked around the mansion.

"I was hiding from them."

"Who?"

Her expression changed.

The same fear I had seen in Cesare.

"The people who wanted me dead."

I looked at Cesare.

"And you?"

My mother looked at him.

"Cesare was the only person who kept his promise."

The words hit me.

Because all this time, I thought Cesare was the person keeping me away from the truth.

But maybe he was the person keeping the truth away from the people who wanted to destroy me.

My mother reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"I kept this for you."

She handed it to me.

"My last letter."

I looked at her.

"You wrote one before you disappeared?"

She nodded.

"I didn't know if I would survive."

My hands shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was hers.

My mother's words.

My entire life, I had wanted something from her.

A reason.

An explanation.

Anything.

And now I had it.

"Elena,

If you are reading this, it means Cesare kept his promise.

I need you to understand one thing.

I never left you because I wanted to.

I left because loving you made you a target."

I stopped reading.

My tears fell onto the paper.

"Your father was not the man you were told he was.

He was not a victim.

He was the reason everything started."

My breathing stopped.

I looked up.

"My father?"

My mother nodded slowly.

"Your father was part of the Bellante family."

The room became silent.

I looked at Cesare.

He already knew.

Of course he did.

"My father was a Bellante?"

My mother whispered:

"Yes."

The name suddenly felt heavier.

The bloodline.

The power.

The danger.

Everything connected.

"Who was he?"

Cesare answered.

"Adrian Bellante."

I looked at him.

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way everyone reacted told me everything.

My mother closed her eyes.

"Adrian was Cesare's older brother."

I felt the room spin.

I looked between them.

"Your brother?"

Cesare nodded.

A painful memory crossed his face.

"Yes."

The man I married.

The man who protected me.

Was connected to me long before I knew his name.

Not by coincidence.

Not by fate.

By family.

But something still didn't make sense.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Cesare looked at me.

"Because your father was the reason your mother disappeared."

I looked at my mother.

She nodded.

"Adrian wanted power."

Her voice became quiet.

"He believed the Bellante family belonged to him."

"And you?"

"I found out what he was planning."

"What was he planning?"

Nobody answered.

Then my mother said:

"He wanted to destroy anyone who stood in his way."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Did he try to kill you?"

My mother looked at Cesare.

"He tried."

I stared at Cesare.

"And you stopped him?"

Cesare's expression changed.

"I was too late."

Those words carried years of guilt.

My mother stepped closer.

"You saved Elena."

Cesare shook his head.

"I failed you."

"No."

My mother looked at him.

"You saved her."

The room became quiet.

And for the first time, I saw the truth.

Cesare wasn't just carrying secrets.

He was carrying blame.

For years.

Because he believed he had failed everyone he loved.

Then suddenly, the mansion alarm started.

Everyone froze.

Cesare immediately looked at his phone.

A security alert appeared.

"Someone entered the east wing."

His expression changed.

"Impossible."

My mother looked terrified.

"They found us."

Cesare grabbed his weapon.

"Elena, stay with your mother."

I grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked at me.

"I am done being the person everyone protects."

For a second, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

Like he finally understood.

We moved through the mansion together.

Not as strangers.

Not as a fake couple.

As people fighting the same enemy.

The east hallway was dark.

Too quiet.

Cesare motioned for us to stop.

The security team should have been there.

But nobody answered.

Then we found them.

Two guards unconscious on the floor.

No blood.

Just silence.

Someone had entered without leaving a trace.

Cesare looked at the security cameras.

The screens were black.

"They disabled everything."

My mother whispered:

"Adrian always did that."

I turned.

"You mean my father?"

She nodded.

Then the lights came back.

Every screen turned on at once.

A video appeared.

A man was sitting in a chair.

Older.

Cold eyes.

A familiar face.

Cesare stepped backward.

Because he recognized him.

My mother covered her mouth.

"No..."

I looked at the screen.

The man smiled.

And then he spoke.

"Hello, Elena."

My entire body froze.

Because the man on the screen was supposed to have been dead for fifteen years.

But he was alive.

And he was looking directly at me.

"My daughter."

The video paused.

Then a final message appeared.

"Come to the old Bellante estate alone."

Cesare grabbed my hand.

"You're not going."

But before I could answer, my phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

May you like

From my father.

"Ask Cesare why he killed me."
