Chapter 6 - The Man Who Carried Rachel’s Last Secret

The figure standing in the hallway did not move.

Neither did Adrian.

For several seconds, Elena wondered if she was dreaming.

Because the man in front of them looked impossible.

Michael.

The name that had made Adrian freeze.

The name that belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.

He stood under the weak hallway light holding an old leather folder.

A folder Elena recognized immediately.

Not because she had seen it before.

Because Adrian had.

His eyes never left it.

“What did you do with it?”

Adrian’s voice was different.

Cold.

Dangerous.

Michael smiled slightly.

“Still the same.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You disappeared.”

“So did everyone who knew the truth.”

Elena looked between them.

“What truth?”

Nobody answered.

That was becoming the one thing she hated most.

Everyone around her knew pieces of her life.

Everyone except her.

Michael looked at Elena.

And his expression changed.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something closer to regret.

“So this is Rachel’s daughter.”

Elena stiffened.

“My name is Elena.”

Michael nodded slowly.

“I know.”

“How?”

He looked at Adrian.

“That’s what you should ask him.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Don’t involve her.”

Michael laughed quietly.

“Adrian, she is already involved.”

The words hung in the air.

Elena felt her chest tighten.

She stepped forward.

“No more.”

Everyone looked at her.

“I’m done standing here while people talk around me.”

Her voice shook.

But she continued.

“My mother disappeared. Someone tried to kill Adrian. There is a secret file with my name on it. And now a dead man is standing in my apartment.”

She looked directly at Adrian.

“I want the truth.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian lowered his weapon.

Because he knew she was right.

Michael walked inside and placed the leather folder on the table.

“This is what Rachel was trying to protect.”

Elena stared at it.

“What is it?”

Michael opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Names.

Dates.

A record of people connected to the Vale family.

Some names had red marks across them.

Some had notes beside them.

Missing.

Dead.

Unknown.

Elena looked away.

“Why would my mother have this?”

Michael answered quietly.

“Because she found out Adrian’s father wasn’t just controlling businesses.”

He looked at Adrian.

“He was controlling people.”

Adrian said nothing.

Elena noticed.

He wasn’t surprised.

He was remembering.

Michael pulled out another photograph.

A younger Rachel.

A younger Adrian.

And another man standing between them.

Adrian’s father.

But this picture was different.

Rachel wasn’t afraid.

She was smiling.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“You knew my mother.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Adrian looked down.

“When I was eighteen, my father wanted me to become part of the family business.”

Elena listened carefully.

“I didn’t want that life.”

Michael looked away.

“Adrian tried to leave.”

“And?”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“My father didn’t allow people to leave.”

The room became silent.

Elena understood.

That was the first time she saw Adrian not as the powerful man everyone feared.

But as someone who had once been trapped.

“What did my mother do?”

Adrian looked at her.

“She helped me escape.”

Elena froze.

“Why?”

“Because she believed people could change.”

The answer was simple.

And somehow, it hurt more.

Because Elena realized her mother had seen something in Adrian that everyone else missed.

Michael opened another document.

“This is why she disappeared.”

Elena looked down.

There was a list.

At the top was one name.

Rachel Ward.

Below it were several others.

But one name was circled.

Adrian Vale.

Elena looked at him.

“Why is your name there?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

Michael did.

“Because Rachel discovered Adrian was the next target.”

Elena frowned.

“That makes no sense.”

Michael nodded.

“Because the person who ordered it was his own father.”

Silence.

The statement changed everything.

Adrian’s father had not only hunted Rachel.

He had planned to destroy his own son.

Elena looked at Adrian.

“Did you know?”

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.”

The answer shocked her.

“You knew your father wanted you gone?”

Adrian nodded.

“For years.”

“And you never told me?”

His eyes met hers.

“You didn’t know me yesterday.”

The honesty hurt.

But Elena understood something.

Adrian had spent his whole life surviving.

Not trusting.

Not explaining.

Not needing anyone.

Until now.

Michael closed the folder.

“There’s something else.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

Michael hesitated.

“That night Rachel disappeared…”

Elena waited.

“She wasn’t alone.”

A cold feeling moved through the room.

“Who was with her?”

Michael looked at Elena.

“Someone who knew where she hid the final copy of the records.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Who?”

Michael looked toward the window.

“They’re already here.”

Everyone froze.

Adrian immediately turned.

The lights outside the apartment building flickered.

Cars stopped in the street below.

More than one.

Michael whispered:

“They followed me.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“How?”

Michael looked at the folder.

“Because I was never carrying the real file.”

Elena looked at him.

“What?”

Michael opened the folder.

The documents inside were empty.

Blank pages.

Adrian stared.

“You brought a fake.”

Michael nodded.

“I had to.”

“Where is the real one?”

Michael looked at Elena.

Her heart dropped.

“No.”

Michael reached into his coat.

And pulled out a small envelope.

One Elena recognized.

Because it matched the one her mother left behind.

“The real file was never hidden.”

Adrian watched carefully.

“Where?”

Michael placed the envelope on the table.

“Your mother kept it with the only person she trusted.”

Elena looked at the envelope.

“Who?”

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Someone who raised you when Rachel couldn’t.”

Elena went completely still.

Because there was only one person who fit that description.

Someone she had not seen in years.

Someone she believed was just a normal part of her childhood.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

I know you found the file.

Elena stared.

Then another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph.

Her hands started shaking.

Because the picture showed her mother.

Alive.

May you like

Standing beside the person who had raised Elena after Rachel disappeared.

And below the photo was a name she never expected to see again...
