Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden In Her Mother’s Box

Elena Ward stared at the second phone number hidden beneath Adrian Vale’s card.
She had looked at it for almost ten minutes.
A normal person would have thrown the card away.
A normal person would have called the police.
A normal person would have believed the stranger who warned her.
But Elena had never lived a normal life.
Not after her mother disappeared.
Not after she learned that some secrets were buried because the truth was more dangerous than the lie.
She picked up the card again.
The paper looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
That was what bothered her.
Adrian Vale was not ordinary.
Everything connected to him carried weight.
His name.
His reputation.
His enemies.
And now, somehow, his life was connected to hers.
She looked at the old wooden box sitting on the table.
The box her mother had kept hidden behind a loose brick in the apartment wall.
The box Elena had found three years after her disappearance.
The box she had promised never to open.
Until now.
Her fingers moved slowly toward the lock.
For years, she had wondered what could be inside.
Letters?
Money?
A secret family history?
She never imagined it would involve the most feared man in Chicago.
The lock clicked open.
Inside were only a few things.
A faded photograph.
A silver necklace.
And a small envelope.
The envelope had no name.
No address.
Only one symbol.
The same black circle with a line through the center.
Elena touched it.
Her mother’s voice returned to her memory.
“Some people will tell you Adrian Vale is a monster.”
A younger Elena had looked at her mother in confusion.
“Is he?”
Her mother had stayed silent for a long time.
Then she had whispered:
“The truth is never that simple.”
At the time, Elena thought those words meant nothing.
Now they felt like a warning.
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only one sentence.
If Adrian finds you, he will try to protect you.
Elena stopped breathing.
She read it again.
And again.
Then she flipped the paper over.
Nothing.
No explanation.
No signature.
Only that sentence.
A cold feeling moved through her.
Because the woman on the phone had said the opposite.
She said Adrian was the reason her mother disappeared.
But her mother’s own handwriting said he would protect her.
Someone was lying.
The only question was who.
Across Chicago, Adrian Vale stood inside a dark office overlooking the city.
The broken glass from the diner attack had already been removed from his sleeve.
The cut on his arm had been cleaned.
But his mind was still at Murphy’s Diner.
Not because of the attack.
Because of Elena.
His security chief, Marcus, placed a folder on the desk.
“She was followed before you arrived.”
Adrian looked up.
“By who?”
“We’re still checking.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Marcus remained quiet.
Adrian opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Elena leaving work.
Elena walking home.
Elena entering the diner.
Someone had been watching her.
For weeks.
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“How long?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Six months.”
The room became silent.
“Six months?”
“Yes.”
Adrian closed the folder.
“Why didn’t we know?”
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“Because whoever did this knew how to disappear.”
Adrian walked toward the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
For years, people had tried to find his weaknesses.
His businesses.
His family.
His enemies.
But nobody had ever found something personal.
Until Elena.
A waitress who had no idea who he was.
A woman who had looked at him like he was just another exhausted customer.
A woman who had wrapped his injured hand without asking for anything.
Marcus watched him carefully.
“There’s something else.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“We found a connection between Elena Ward and an old Vale file.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
Marcus opened another folder.
“This was sealed eighteen years ago.”
Adrian looked down.
The first page contained an old photograph.
A woman.
A younger version of Elena’s mother.
Adrian immediately recognized her.
His expression changed.
“That’s impossible.”
Marcus nodded.
“That’s what we thought.”
Adrian picked up the photograph.
His hand tightened.
Because he remembered that woman.
Not from business.
Not from his father’s world.
From a night he had spent trying to forget.
A night when he was eighteen years old.
A night when someone saved his life.
And then disappeared.
“What was her name?”
Marcus looked at the file.
“Rachel Ward.”
Adrian froze.
Elena’s mother.
The woman everyone believed had vanished without a trace.
The woman who had once known a secret about the Vale family.
The woman who had made Adrian promise something he never understood.
Protect her daughter.
Elena did not sleep.
She sat on the edge of her bed holding the old photograph.
It showed her mother standing beside a man.
A man Elena had never seen before.
But there was something strange.
The man was not Adrian.
He was older.
Maybe in his fifties.
And on his hand was the same black symbol.
The symbol from the envelope.
The symbol on Adrian’s card.
Her mother had been connected to two worlds.
One she knew.
One she didn’t.
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Elena jumped.
Unknown number.
Again.
She stared at it.
Then answered.
“Hello?”
This time, the woman spoke immediately.
“You opened the box.”
Elena froze.
“How do you know that?”
“You always were curious, Elena.”
Her stomach tightened.
Because the woman knew her name.
Not just her name.
Her childhood.
“You know me?”
A pause.
Then:
“I knew your mother.”
Elena stood.
“Who are you?”
“My name won’t matter.”
“Then why call me?”
The woman’s voice became quieter.
“Because Adrian Vale has already found you.”
Elena looked toward the card on the table.
“How do you know?”
“Because he always protects what belongs to him.”
Her expression changed.
“I don’t belong to him.”
The woman laughed softly.
Not kindly.
“You really don’t know anything, do you?”
Elena’s grip tightened around the phone.
“What are you talking about?”
The woman did not answer.
Instead, she said:
“Ask Adrian why your mother trusted him.”
The call ended.
Elena stood completely still.
Then she noticed something.
The apartment door.
It was slightly open.
She was certain she had locked it.
Slowly, she walked closer.
Her heart started beating faster.
The door moved slightly.
Someone was outside.
“Elena?”
A voice came from the hallway.
Not the woman.
Not a stranger.
A man.
She knew that voice.
Because she had heard it only once before.
At the diner.
Adrian.
She stepped back.
Why was he here?
How did he find her address?
And why did he look like someone who had just discovered he was too late?
Adrian pushed the door open carefully.
His eyes immediately moved to the wooden box on the table.
Then to the photograph in Elena’s hand.
The color disappeared from his face.
“Elena…”
She stared at him.
“What?”
Adrian walked closer.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he was afraid one wrong movement would break something.
“Where did you get that?”
She looked down at the photograph.
“My mother left it.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Because he knew exactly what it meant.
“No.”
Elena frowned.
“No what?”
Adrian looked toward the hallway behind him.
Then back at her.
“You need to leave this apartment.”
“Why?”
His voice became lower.
Because for the first time, Elena saw fear in Adrian Vale’s eyes.
“Because if they know you opened that box…”
A sound came from the hallway.
A slow knock.
Three times.
Adrian immediately reached for his weapon.
And the voice outside whispered:
“Adrian…”
May you like
Elena looked at him.
Because the person standing behind the door was someone Adrian thought had been dead for eighteen years...
