Chapter 1 - The Smile That Changed Everything

A waitress dropped a coffee pot beside booth twelve and whispered: "Coffee, sir?"
When mafia boss Adrian Vale looked up, he noticed the broken name tag she had dropped on the floor.
On the back were three words scratched into the plastic:
"Never trust Vale."
Adrian suddenly realized someone had been watching her.
Elena Ward had learned one important rule during her years working at Murphy’s Diner.
Never judge people by the clothes they wore.
Because the richest customers often left the smallest tips.
And the quietest people sometimes carried the heaviest secrets.
But Adrian Vale was different.
Everyone in Chicago knew his name.
Not because he appeared on television.
Not because he attended charity events.
Not because he wanted attention.
People knew Adrian because conversations stopped when he entered a room.
Men lowered their voices.
Business owners suddenly remembered appointments.
And people who had once threatened him often disappeared from the city before anyone could ask questions.
Elena did not care about any of that.
Not because she was fearless.
Because she was exhausted.
After eleven hours of serving coffee, cleaning tables, and listening to customers complain about everything from cold eggs to slow service, Elena barely had enough energy left to worry about dangerous men.
That morning, Adrian sat alone beneath the flickering light near the window.
That was the first strange thing.
Men like him were never alone.
Elena carried a fresh pot of coffee toward his booth.
The other servers immediately became nervous.
“Don’t,” one of them whispered.
Elena looked over.
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t bother him.”
“Why?”
Her coworker lowered her voice.
“Because that’s Adrian Vale.”
Elena glanced at the man sitting quietly.
He looked like someone who had not slept in days.
Not a monster.
Not a villain from a story.
Just a tired man drinking coffee without touching his food.
She walked toward him anyway.
“Fresh pot, sir.”
Adrian slowly raised his eyes.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Elena wondered if she had made a mistake.
Then he looked at her name tag.
“Elena.”
She froze.
“Yes?”
“You know who I am?”
She placed the coffee pot down.
“I know you’re a customer.”
A small silence followed.
Most people avoided looking at Adrian.
Elena simply picked up his untouched plate.
“You ordered breakfast.”
“Yes.”
“You haven’t eaten.”
His expression changed slightly.
“Are you watching me?”
“I’m a waitress.”
She shrugged.
“Watching people who need things is basically my entire job.”
For the first time, Adrian looked surprised.
“You talk like this to everyone?”
“Only people who spend twenty dollars on breakfast and ignore it.”
A few seconds passed.
Then Elena noticed something strange.
The corner of his mouth moved.
Barely.
A tiny reaction.
But she saw it.
“Was that a smile?”
Adrian immediately looked away.
“No.”
“It looked like one.”
“I don’t smile.”
Elena placed the coffee pot down.
“That sounds like a difficult way to live.”
The diner became silent.
Nobody spoke to Adrian Vale that way.
Nobody except her.
Adrian studied her carefully.
He expected fear.
Instead, he found exhaustion, kindness, and something he had almost forgotten existed.
Normal human honesty.
“You always speak your mind?”
“Usually.”
“That gets people into trouble.”
Elena looked at his untouched eggs.
“So does skipping breakfast.”
For a moment, Adrian forgot about everything outside that diner.
The threats.
The deals.
The enemies.
He simply sat there.
With a waitress who treated him like a person.
Then his eyes moved toward the front window.
The warmth disappeared.
A black sedan was parked across the street.
His entire body changed.
“Elena.”
She noticed the seriousness in his voice.
“Yes?”
“Get behind the counter.”
She frowned.
“What?”
“Now.”
The diner door opened.
Three men stepped inside.
Then the first gunshot exploded.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
Tables overturned.
And before Elena even understood what was happening, Adrian was already moving.
His hand grabbed her wrist.
He pulled her behind him.
Another bullet tore through the window.
Dust and broken glass filled the air.
Adrian stood between her and the danger.
The man everyone feared was protecting the one person who had spoken to him without fear.
“Down.”
Elena dropped behind the table.
When everything slowed for a moment, she realized something.
Adrian Vale was bleeding.
But he was still looking at her.
Not himself.
Her.
“Elena…”
She looked toward him.
And then she saw the broken name tag on the floor beside her.
The one she had lost earlier.
She picked it up.
Something was written on the back.
Three words.
"Never trust Vale."
Her hands became cold.
May you like
Because someone had placed that message there before Adrian arrived.
And someone outside the diner already knew she would meet him...
