Chapter 5 - The Voice Inside The Hidden Phone

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

The small device inside the wooden box continued vibrating against the table, filling Elena’s apartment with a sound that felt impossible.

Because the name on the screen was impossible.

Rachel Ward.

Elena’s mother.

The woman who had disappeared eighteen years ago.

The woman everyone believed was gone forever.

Elena stared at the glowing screen.

Her mind refused to understand what she was seeing.

“My mother…”

The words came out as a whisper.

Adrian stood beside her, completely frozen.

For the first time since Elena met him, he looked powerless.

Not dangerous.

Not controlled.

Just a man standing in front of a ghost from his past.

The mysterious woman who had entered the apartment looked terrified.

“Don’t answer.”

Her voice was urgent.

Elena turned toward her.

“Why?”

The woman looked at the phone.

“Because whoever is calling wants you to believe it’s Rachel.”

“But the name—”

“Names can be changed.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

“You knew about this?”

Adrian didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Her expression hardened.

“You knew.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You walked into my diner. You knew my mother. You knew that symbol. You knew about the box.”

Adrian took a step closer.

“I didn’t know the box was still here.”

“But you knew something.”

Silence.

And Elena hated that silence.

Because Adrian Vale was a man who always had an answer.

Except when the answer was the truth.

The phone stopped ringing.

The room became quiet again.

Then a message appeared.

One sentence.

Elena.

She stared.

Her blood went cold.

The phone knew her name.

Not the name on her waitress tag.

Her real name.

The woman beside her moved closer.

“What does it say?”

Elena didn’t answer.

Adrian looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?”

She turned the phone toward him.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he reached for it.

Elena pulled it away.

“No.”

His eyes met hers.

“Elena.”

“No more secrets.”

The words hit him harder than she expected.

Because Adrian didn’t argue.

He simply lowered his hand.

The feared mafia boss stepped back.

And Elena realized something.

He was letting her choose.

The phone vibrated again.

Another message.

This time, an image appeared.

Elena opened it.

A photograph loaded slowly.

A young woman.

Her mother.

Rachel.

But she was not alone.

She was holding a baby.

The same baby from the old photograph.

Elena looked closer.

Her hands started shaking.

Because beside Rachel stood Adrian’s father.

The man Adrian had just mentioned.

The man he said his mother was running from.

But there was something else.

Written on the back of the photograph was a date.

The same day Elena was born.

She looked at Adrian.

“Why is your father in this picture?”

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

The woman beside them did.

“Because your mother wasn’t hiding from him.”

Elena looked at her.

“She was working with him.”

Adrian’s eyes sharpened.

“No.”

The woman looked at him.

“You know it’s true.”

“My father destroyed lives.”

“Yes.”

“Rachel hated him.”

The woman shook her head.

“She hated what he became.”

The room fell silent.

Elena looked between them.

“You’re both talking like I’m not here.”

Nobody spoke.

She stepped back.

“I deserve to know.”

Adrian looked at her.

And something in his expression broke.

“You do.”

It was the first time he admitted it.

No excuses.

No control.

No distance.

“You deserve everything.”

Elena waited.

Adrian looked toward the photograph.

“Your mother discovered my father was using the Vale family business to hide something.”

“What?”

“A list.”

The woman answered.

“A list of names.”

Elena frowned.

“Names of who?”

“People who disappeared.”

The answer made the room colder.

Adrian continued.

“My father kept records of everyone who knew too much.”

Elena looked at the phone.

“And my mother?”

The woman’s eyes filled with regret.

“She found the records.”

A pause.

“Then she found out your name was on them.”

Elena stopped.

“What?”

Adrian looked at her.

“Your name was never supposed to exist in those records.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t understand.”

The woman walked toward the table.

She touched the photograph.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave you.”

Elena felt tears forming.

“Then why?”

The woman looked at Adrian.

Because the answer belonged to him.

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

Then he spoke.

“Because she was trying to save you from my family.”

The words hurt more than Elena expected.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The hiding.

The warnings.

The box.

The secrets.

Her mother had not abandoned her.

She had been running.

But from what?

The phone rang again.

Everyone turned.

This time, Adrian picked it up.

Before anyone could stop him.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a distorted voice answered.

“Adrian Vale.”

His face changed.

Because he recognized the voice.

“Who is this?”

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“You really don’t know?”

Adrian stepped away.

Elena watched him carefully.

The woman whispered:

“Who is it?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

The voice continued.

“You spent eighteen years protecting a daughter who was never supposed to survive.”

Elena froze.

Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Say that again.”

The voice laughed.

“She never told you the whole truth, did she?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“What are you talking about?”

The voice became softer.

“Rachel didn’t only hide Elena from my father.”

A pause.

“She hid Elena from you.”

The room became completely silent.

Elena felt like the floor disappeared beneath her.

Adrian looked at the phone.

Then at her.

“No.”

The voice continued.

“You should ask her about the night she was born.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Shock.

Because he knew something.

Something Elena didn’t.

The phone disconnected.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Elena whispered:

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

“What happened the night I was born?”

His silence answered before his words did.

And that scared her more.

The woman suddenly looked toward the window.

Her face turned pale.

“What?”

Adrian noticed.

“What did you see?”

She slowly stepped backward.

“There’s someone outside.”

Adrian moved instantly.

He reached for his weapon.

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the apartment went dark.

Elena heard footsteps.

Not outside.

Inside.

Someone was already in the apartment.

Adrian grabbed Elena’s hand.

“Stay behind me.”

A shadow moved near the hallway.

The woman whispered a name.

A name Adrian had not heard in eighteen years.

“Michael.”

Adrian froze.

May you like

Because Michael was not supposed to be alive.

And then the figure stepped into the moonlight holding the missing records from Rachel Ward’s file...
