Chapter 7 - A Second Chance for a Broken Family

The name echoed through the nursery.

"Victoria Hale."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Lorenzo stared at the guard.

I watched the change happen in his face.

It wasn't anger.

Not yet.

It was something deeper.

Disappointment.

Because Victoria wasn't a stranger.

She wasn't an enemy hiding outside the walls.

She was someone who had walked through the Rossi mansion without suspicion.

Someone who knew the family.

Someone Lorenzo had allowed close.

And that was the kind of betrayal that hurt the most.

"Explain," Lorenzo said.

The guard immediately lowered his eyes.

"We traced the message through the security system. The phone used to send the image was connected to a device registered under Victoria Hale's name."

Lorenzo remained silent.

"Where is she?"

"She is in the west wing."

Lorenzo handed Leo carefully to me.

The movement was gentle.

Protective.

Even in that moment, even with anger building inside him, his first thought was still his son.

"Stay with him."

I looked at him.

"Lorenzo."

He stopped.

I could see the battle happening behind his eyes.

The part of him that wanted revenge.

The part of him that wanted answers.

And the part of him that was simply a father who had already lost too much.

"Be careful," I said.

It was a simple sentence.

But something about it made him pause.

Because nobody usually told Lorenzo Rossi to be careful.

They told him to be powerful.

They told him to win.

They told him to destroy his enemies.

Nobody reminded him that he was still human.

He gave a small nod.

Then he left.

Victoria was waiting in the west wing.

At least, that's what Lorenzo discovered when he entered.

She wasn't running.

She wasn't hiding.

She was standing beside the window, looking over the city.

Almost like she had expected him.

"You came quickly."

Lorenzo closed the door behind him.

"You sent a picture of my son to threaten Elena."

Victoria turned around slowly.

Her expression remained calm.

"I sent a warning."

"A warning?"

His voice became colder.

"You photographed my child inside his nursery."

"I needed you to understand the danger."

"The danger?"

Lorenzo stepped closer.

"The danger was someone getting near my son?"

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

"No."

A pause.

"The danger was you forgetting who you are."

Those words made him stop.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria walked toward him.

"You were never like this."

Lorenzo's expression hardened.

"Like what?"

"Soft."

The word hung between them.

"You built everything because you trusted nobody. You survived because you never allowed emotions to control you."

She looked toward the hallway.

"Then she came here."

Lorenzo knew exactly who she meant.

"Elena."

Victoria nodded.

"One night with a baby, and suddenly you believe she is different."

"She saved my son."

"Or she made you believe she did."

The silence became dangerous.

Lorenzo's eyes turned cold.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Victoria sighed.

"Do you really think it's a coincidence?"

"What?"

"That a maid appears right when your son is dying?"

Lorenzo stared at her.

"You think she planned it?"

"I think you stopped asking questions because you wanted to believe."

For the first time, doubt crossed his face.

Not about Elena.

About himself.

Because Victoria knew his weakness.

She knew he blamed himself.

She knew he was desperate for hope.

"You think I didn't investigate her?" Lorenzo asked.

Victoria was quiet.

"I know you did."

"And?"

"And grief makes people careless."

Those words were cruel.

But they struck somewhere deep.

Because Lorenzo had been careless.

Not with Leo.

Never with Leo.

But with himself.

He had spent months searching for a reason to believe his son would survive.

Maybe that was why Elena frightened him.

Because she represented something he had stopped believing in.

Hope.

"Did you send the message?" he asked.

Victoria looked away.

That was answer enough.

"Why?"

Her face changed.

For the first time, the confidence disappeared.

"Because I saw what was happening."

"What?"

"You were changing."

Lorenzo stared at her.

"You were smiling again."

The confession surprised him.

Victoria's voice became quieter.

"After Isabella died, everyone thought you were gone too."

She looked down.

"You became someone else."

Lorenzo said nothing.

"But then Elena came."

A bitter smile appeared.

"And suddenly the man who couldn't sleep because he was afraid of losing his son started believing he could have a future."

The anger in Lorenzo's eyes softened slightly.

Not because he forgave her.

Because he understood something.

Victoria wasn't protecting the family.

She was protecting the version of Lorenzo that existed before Elena.

The broken man.

The man who felt nothing.

"You were afraid," he said.

Victoria looked at him.

"What?"

"You weren't protecting Leo."

His voice lowered.

"You were afraid of losing control."

Her silence confirmed it.

Lorenzo shook his head.

"Get out of my house."

Victoria's eyes widened.

"Lorenzo—"

"You threatened my son's safety."

"I was trying to protect you."

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"You were trying to protect the man I used to be."

The words hurt her.

But they were true.

Victoria left without another argument.

When Lorenzo returned to the nursery, I was still holding Leo.

The baby was asleep.

Peaceful.

Safe.

But Lorenzo looked different.

Not angry.

Just tired.

I studied his face.

"What happened?"

He looked at Leo first.

Then me.

"She admitted it."

I didn't ask who.

I already knew.

"Why?"

Lorenzo walked closer.

"Because she thought you were changing me."

I looked down.

"Are you?"

He was quiet.

That question mattered.

Because Lorenzo Rossi had spent years building walls.

And now someone had walked through them without trying.

"I don't know."

The honesty surprised me.

Then he looked at Leo.

"But maybe that's not a bad thing."

For some reason, those words made my chest tighten.

Because I understood.

Changing didn't mean becoming weak.

Sometimes changing meant finally becoming the person you were before the world hurt you.

That night, Lorenzo did something nobody in the mansion expected.

He ate dinner at the family table.

Not alone in his office.

Not while working.

With Leo beside him.

And me sitting across from him.

I almost refused.

I was still a maid.

That was not where I belonged.

But Lorenzo simply said,

"You saved my son. You sit here."

Nobody argued.

Not the staff.

Not the guards.

Nobody.

Because everyone had seen the same thing.

The feared Lorenzo Rossi had changed.

Not because someone forced him.

Not because he lost power.

Because someone reminded him that love was still possible.

Several weeks passed.

Leo continued improving.

The doctors were amazed.

His strength returned.

His smile appeared more often.

And the mansion slowly became a home again.

Not just a fortress.

I started spending less time cleaning rooms and more time helping with Leo.

Nobody questioned it anymore.

Except me.

Because sometimes I still wondered if I belonged there.

One evening, I found Lorenzo outside in the garden.

He was holding an old photograph.

Isabella.

I stopped.

"I didn't know you came here."

He looked at the picture.

"I used to come here with her."

I stayed quiet.

After a moment, he handed me the photograph.

"She would have liked you."

I looked at him.

"You never met her."

"No."

A small smile appeared.

"But I know what kind of person she was."

He looked toward the mansion.

"She believed kindness was a strength."

The words stayed with me.

Because I realized something.

Lorenzo wasn't only saving Leo anymore.

He was saving himself.

"I want to ask you something," he said.

I turned.

"What?"

"When all of this happened..."

He paused.

"Did you ever regret helping him?"

I thought about the gun.

The danger.

The secrets.

The enemies.

The fear.

Then I thought about Leo's smile.

"No."

Lorenzo looked relieved.

"Why?"

I smiled softly.

"Because some children are worth risking everything for."

He looked at me for a long time.

And in that moment, I saw something I never expected.

Not the mafia boss.

Not the powerful man.

Just Lorenzo.

A father.

A survivor.

A man who had been given a second chance.

But neither of us knew that the final secret of the Rossi family had not yet been revealed.

Because somewhere outside the mansion, someone was still watching.

May you like

Someone who knew the truth about Isabella's death.

And they were finally ready to come back.
