Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Changed a Dangerous Man

The Rossi mansion had always been a place built on secrets.
But after Lorenzo locked down the estate, those secrets began to surface.
The halls that once carried whispers of grief now carried whispers of fear.
Everyone knew something had changed.
The guards stood closer together.
The staff avoided unnecessary conversations.
The family members who once walked through the mansion like they owned it suddenly looked like they were waiting for someone to accuse them.
And in the middle of all of it was me.
The maid who was never supposed to matter.
The woman who had entered the Rossi world by accident.
The woman who had saved the one person Lorenzo Rossi would destroy the world to protect.
Leo.
I never imagined that holding a baby in my arms for a few minutes would change the direction of my entire life.
But that was exactly what happened.
The next morning, Lorenzo called me to his office again.
This time, there was no folder on the desk.
No investigation.
No suspicion.
Only a tired man standing by the window.
A man who looked like he hadn't slept.
"You should rest," I said.
He turned around.
The suggestion seemed to surprise him.
"Rest?"
I nodded.
"You've been awake almost every night since Leo was born."
His expression changed slightly.
Nobody talked to Lorenzo Rossi that way.
People gave him reports.
People asked for permission.
People feared making mistakes.
But nobody told him he looked exhausted.
"You worry about everyone except yourself," I continued.
For a moment, he simply stared at me.
Then something unexpected happened.
He smiled.
Barely.
But I saw it.
"You always speak your mind."
"I usually regret it later."
That almost made him laugh.
Almost.
The moment passed quickly.
But it was the first time I saw the man beneath the reputation.
Not Lorenzo Rossi, the feared figure.
Just Lorenzo.
A father.
A widower.
A man who was tired of carrying everything alone.
"I found something about Isabella's death," he said.
The warmth disappeared.
I became serious.
"What?"
He walked toward the desk and placed a small envelope in front of me.
"I had my own people investigate after the police closed the case."
I looked at the envelope.
"Why didn't you tell me before?"
"Because I didn't know if I could trust anyone."
The honesty in his voice made me understand.
This wasn't about power.
This was about survival.
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A man standing near Isabella's car the day of the explosion.
"Who is he?"
"Someone who worked for my family."
My eyes widened.
"One of your men?"
Lorenzo nodded.
"Someone who had access."
The same words from before.
Someone inside.
Someone close.
"Do you know where he is?"
"No."
His face darkened.
"He disappeared the same night Isabella died."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Then he knows the truth."
"Yes."
Lorenzo looked at the photograph.
"And I think he knows why someone wanted Leo gone."
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
I froze.
I rarely received calls.
Especially inside the Rossi mansion.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Lorenzo immediately noticed.
"Don't answer."
I looked at him.
But the phone kept ringing.
Then it stopped.
A few seconds later, a message appeared.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
It was a picture.
Of Leo.
Taken inside the nursery.
Taken that morning.
The message contained only five words.
"You should have stayed away."
I couldn't breathe.
Lorenzo saw my face change.
"What is it?"
I handed him the phone.
The moment he saw the picture, every trace of calm disappeared.
His eyes became dangerous.
"Nobody moves."
He grabbed his own phone.
Within seconds, the mansion transformed again.
Guards rushed through the halls.
Security systems were checked.
Every person inside the estate was questioned.
But this time, something was different.
Lorenzo wasn't just protecting Leo.
He was protecting me too.
And everyone noticed.
Especially Victoria.
I saw her standing at the end of the hallway as Lorenzo walked toward me.
Her expression was unreadable.
"You've become important very quickly," she said.
I stopped.
"I don't understand what you mean."
She smiled.
"Of course you don't."
Her eyes moved toward Lorenzo.
"That is what makes you dangerous."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because Lorenzo doesn't trust easily."
Her voice became quieter.
"And somehow, you made him trust you."
I didn't know how to answer.
Because I didn't understand it either.
Lorenzo Rossi was a man surrounded by people who wanted something from him.
Money.
Power.
Protection.
I wanted none of those things.
Maybe that was why he believed me.
Victoria stepped closer.
"You think saving Leo makes you part of this family?"
The question bothered me.
Because the truth was, I never wanted to become part of their world.
"I don't want anything from your family."
She studied me.
"Everyone says that."
"And?"
"And everyone eventually wants something."
I looked directly at her.
"Maybe that's because everyone you know is like that."
For a second, her expression changed.
Like I had touched something hidden.
Then she walked away.
Later that night, I found Lorenzo sitting beside Leo's crib.
No guards.
No phone.
No business.
Just him.
Watching his son sleep.
It was the first time I had seen him completely still.
I stood at the door.
"I thought you would be working."
He didn't turn around.
"I was."
"Now?"
"Now I'm being a father."
The answer was simple.
But it carried so much weight.
I walked inside.
Leo looked peaceful.
Healthy.
Nothing like the fragile baby I had first seen.
"He looks different."
Lorenzo nodded.
"He is different."
A small smile appeared.
"He gained weight."
I smiled too.
"That's good."
For a while, we just stood there.
Two people connected by a child neither of us expected to need.
Then Lorenzo spoke.
"When Isabella died, I thought my life ended too."
I looked at him.
"I thought protecting Leo meant keeping everyone away."
His voice became quieter.
"But maybe I was wrong."
I didn't say anything.
Because I knew what he meant.
Sometimes protection became a prison.
Sometimes fear made people push away the very things they needed.
"I spent months looking for someone to blame," he continued.
"Enemies. Business rivals. Anyone."
He looked at Leo.
"But I never thought about what my son needed."
I understood.
Because grief could make people focus on the person they lost instead of the person still standing in front of them.
"You love him," I said.
Lorenzo looked at me.
"More than anything."
"Then he already has what matters most."
The silence between us felt different.
Not uncomfortable.
Not heavy.
Just peaceful.
Then Leo moved.
His tiny hand reached out.
This time, he didn't reach only for me.
He reached for Lorenzo.
The man who had spent months believing his son was slipping away froze.
Slowly, he placed his finger in Leo's hand.
The baby grabbed it.
And Lorenzo closed his eyes.
A tear fell.
Not from weakness.
From relief.
"I thought I would never see this."
I looked away.
Because some moments were too personal.
After a few seconds, he whispered,
"Thank you."
I turned back.
"For what?"
"For bringing him back to me."
I shook my head.
"I didn't bring him back."
Lorenzo looked confused.
"You reminded him he was loved."
Those words stayed with him.
Because they were exactly what he had forgotten.
Love was not something you could buy.
Not with money.
Not with power.
Not with fear.
Then the peaceful moment was interrupted.
A guard appeared at the door.
"Mr. Rossi."
Lorenzo immediately looked up.
"What?"
The guard hesitated.
"We found the person who sent the message."
The room went silent.
"Who?"
The guard looked uncomfortable.
Then he answered.
"It was someone inside the mansion."
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
"Name."
The guard swallowed.
"Victoria Hale."
The silence that followed was colder than anything before.
May you like
Because the person who had warned Lorenzo about trusting others...
Was now the person everyone suspected.
