Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Entered the Lion’s Den

The moment Victoria stepped into Lorenzo Rossi’s office, I felt the entire atmosphere change.

It was subtle.

A different kind of silence.

Not the painful silence that had filled the mansion after Isabella’s death.

Not the hopeful silence from the night Leo finally ate.

This silence was colder.

The kind that warned you something dangerous was approaching.

Victoria stood near the doorway, perfectly composed.

Everything about her looked expensive.

Her designer dress.

Her jewelry.

The confidence in the way she carried herself.

She looked like someone who belonged in Lorenzo Rossi’s world.

And I suddenly became very aware of who I was.

A maid.

A woman wearing a simple uniform.

A woman who had accidentally stepped into a world where powerful people fought battles I didn’t understand.

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

"What are you doing here?"

Victoria smiled slightly.

"Is that how you greet family?"

Family.

The word caught my attention.

I looked between them.

Lorenzo noticed.

"Elena, go check on Leo."

I immediately understood.

He was dismissing me.

Not because he wanted me gone.

Because he didn't want me involved.

But before I could leave, Victoria spoke.

"Actually, I would like her to stay."

Her eyes moved toward me.

"I’m curious about the woman who managed to accomplish what every doctor failed to do."

The way she said it didn't sound like admiration.

It sounded like suspicion.

I remained silent.

Lorenzo's voice became colder.

"Victoria."

She ignored his warning.

"Everyone in this house is talking about her."

She walked slowly into the room.

"The new maid who walked into the nursery and somehow saved the Rossi heir."

Her eyes narrowed.

"That is quite a story."

I looked at Lorenzo.

He understood immediately.

"Enough."

The word carried power.

Victoria stopped.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then she laughed softly.

"Lorenzo, you still don't understand, do you?"

His eyes remained fixed on her.

"Understand what?"

"That people are watching."

She looked toward me again.

"Your enemies are watching."

The room became still.

Because that was something I hadn't considered.

I had only thought about Leo.

About helping a baby who needed someone.

I hadn't thought about what it meant to suddenly become important to the Rossi family.

Lorenzo stepped closer to Victoria.

"Choose your next words carefully."

Victoria's smile disappeared.

"Fine."

She lowered her voice.

"I'm saying you should be careful who you allow near your son."

The accusation was obvious.

My chest tightened.

I had expected people to question me.

I had expected suspicion.

But hearing it from someone who clearly belonged in Lorenzo's world still hurt.

Because I knew the truth.

I had lost my daughter.

I knew what it meant to protect a child.

I would never hurt Leo.

Never.

Lorenzo looked at me.

And what happened next surprised me.

He didn't hesitate.

"Elena stays."

Victoria's eyebrows lifted.

"You trust her?"

Lorenzo's answer came immediately.

"I trust what I saw."

Those words were simple.

But they meant more than he probably realized.

Because the man who had once pointed a gun at me was now defending me.

Victoria studied him carefully.

Then she looked at me.

"I hope you're worth the trouble."

She turned and walked away.

The door closed behind her.

Only then did I realize I had been holding my breath.

Lorenzo remained silent.

I looked at him.

"Who is she?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"Victoria Hale."

The name meant nothing to me.

"She is connected to my family."

"How?"

His expression became distant.

"Her father was one of my father's closest allies."

That explanation was not enough.

I could tell there was more.

But I didn't ask.

Everyone had secrets in the Rossi mansion.

Including me.

Lorenzo walked toward the window.

"You should understand something."

I waited.

"My world is dangerous."

I almost smiled.

"I noticed."

He looked back at me.

"This isn't a normal household."

"I know."

"No, you don't."

His voice wasn't angry.

It was serious.

"There are people who would use my son to hurt me."

I looked toward the hallway.

Toward the nursery where Leo slept.

"And now they might see me as a way to reach him."

Lorenzo didn't deny it.

That was answer enough.

I thought about leaving.

Maybe that would be easier.

Maybe I should return to being invisible.

A maid.

Someone nobody noticed.

Someone nobody could use.

But then I remembered Leo's tiny hand holding my uniform.

I remembered how peacefully he slept.

And I knew I couldn't walk away.

"Then protect him."

Lorenzo looked surprised.

"What?"

"You are his father."

I met his eyes.

"If there are dangerous people, protect him."

The corner of his jaw tightened.

"I am trying."

The pain in his voice surprised me.

Because behind all the power, behind all the fear people had of him, there was a man blaming himself.

"You think you failed him."

It wasn't a question.

Lorenzo looked away.

"His mother died because she was with me."

I stayed quiet.

"I promised Isabella I would protect them."

His voice became lower.

"And I failed."

I had never seen grief like that.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just a wound that never closed.

"Maybe you couldn't save his mother."

He looked at me.

"But you are saving him now."

For a moment, he didn't respond.

Then he said quietly,

"You sound like you know me."

"I know loss."

That was the only answer I could give.

Later that afternoon, I returned to the nursery.

Leo was awake.

A nurse was checking him while another doctor reviewed his condition.

But when I entered, his eyes immediately moved toward me.

The nurse smiled.

"He recognizes you."

I froze.

Something about those words touched a place inside me I thought had disappeared forever.

I approached the crib.

"Hi, Leo."

His tiny hand moved.

I gently placed my finger near him.

He grabbed it.

The nurse looked emotional.

"He hasn't done that with anyone."

I looked down.

"Maybe he just needed someone to understand him."

I didn't notice Lorenzo standing at the door.

Not until the room became quiet.

He had heard.

His expression was unreadable.

But his eyes weren't.

There was gratitude there.

And something else.

Something I couldn't name.

After the doctors left, Lorenzo stayed.

He stood beside the crib.

Watching his son.

"You were right."

I looked at him.

"About what?"

"He needed someone who understood."

I smiled faintly.

"Babies usually know who is honest with them."

Lorenzo looked at Leo.

Then at me.

"Why didn't you leave?"

The question surprised me.

"What?"

"After last night."

He looked toward the spot where he had held the gun.

"After I threatened you."

I thought about it.

The truth was complicated.

Because fear told me to leave.

Pain told me I had already lost enough.

But something else kept me there.

"Because Leo needed me."

Lorenzo was quiet.

"And because?"

I looked at him.

"Because I know what it's like when everyone gives up."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Lorenzo nodded slowly.

Like he understood more than I expected.

But before either of us could say anything else, his phone rang.

He answered immediately.

The change in his face was instant.

The father disappeared.

The powerful man returned.

"What happened?"

A pause.

His eyes became cold.

"Are you sure?"

Another pause.

Then he looked toward the nursery.

Toward Leo.

Toward me.

"There is a security breach."

My heart dropped.

Lorenzo ended the call.

The peaceful moment disappeared.

The danger we had been ignoring had finally arrived.

Someone had entered the Rossi mansion.

May you like

And whoever it was wasn't looking for money.

They were looking for his son.
