Chapter 5 - The Room Isabella Never Wanted Him To Find

Adrian Black had spent his entire life learning one rule.

Never show fear.

Not in front of enemies.

Not in front of allies.

Not even in front of himself.

But as he stood inside the empty restaurant, staring at the message written in Isabella's handwriting, that rule meant nothing.

Because someone had taken his son.

And they had used his dead wife's name to do it.

"Come find me."

Four words.

Four words that turned his entire world upside down.

Adrian held the paper tightly.

The ink was old.

The handwriting was real.

There was no doubt.

Isabella had written it.

But why?

Why would she leave a message that led to Leo disappearing?

Why would she create a trail that ended with her son being taken?

Emma walked toward him slowly.

"Adrian..."

He turned.

His eyes were cold.

"Where is my son?"

The question wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Emma felt the danger in his voice.

"I don't know."

"Think carefully."

"I am."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Because the last person Leo trusted was you."

Emma looked hurt.

"I would never hurt him."

"I didn't say you would."

"But you thought it."

The silence between them was heavy.

Adrian looked away.

Because she was right.

For a moment, he had suspected everyone.

Even her.

Especially her.

That was how his world worked.

Trust got people killed.

Clara stepped forward.

"Adrian."

He looked at her.

"If you want to find Leo, you need to stop thinking like a man who is hunting an enemy."

His eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"It means someone who took Leo wanted you to chase them."

She pointed at the note.

"This isn't a threat."

Adrian looked at the paper.

"It's an invitation."

The words made him uncomfortable.

Because she was right.

Whoever took Leo didn't hide him.

They left a path.

They wanted Adrian to follow.

"They know me," Adrian said.

Clara nodded.

"They know you very well."

Emma looked around the empty restaurant.

"How did they get inside?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew the answer.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had been close.

Someone knew exactly where Leo would be.

Adrian grabbed his phone.

He called Marcus.

The call connected instantly.

"Boss."

"Lock down every exit from the restaurant."

"Already done."

Adrian paused.

"You knew?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I saw the security footage."

"Send it."

A few seconds later, Adrian's phone received a video.

He opened it.

The footage showed the restaurant entrance.

Leo walking beside Emma.

Then the lights went out.

Seven seconds of darkness.

When the lights returned...

Leo was gone.

Adrian watched it again.

And again.

Seven seconds.

Too short for a stranger.

Too clean for a random kidnapping.

Someone knew exactly what they were doing.

"Stop the video."

Marcus obeyed.

"Zoom in on the door."

The image became blurry.

But then Adrian saw something.

A hand.

A ring.

A familiar ring.

His face changed.

"Impossible."

Emma noticed.

"What?"

Adrian didn't answer.

He stared at the screen.

Because the person who opened the door wasn't a stranger.

It was someone he knew.

Someone who had worked beside him for years.

"Marcus."

"Yes, boss?"

"Find Daniel."

Silence.

Then:

"Daniel?"

"Now."

Marcus's voice became cautious.

"Boss... Daniel died."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"No."

He looked at the frozen image.

"The man in this video is wearing his ring."

The room became silent.

Daniel Russo.

Adrian's former right-hand man.

The only person who had known every detail of his life.

The only person who knew Isabella.

The only person who had access to everything.

And the man who supposedly died two years ago.

Clara looked at Adrian.

"Who is Daniel?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Because saying the name felt like admitting something impossible.

"Someone I trusted."

Emma whispered:

"Someone Isabella knew?"

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

Then he remembered something.

A conversation from three years ago.

The night before Isabella died.

She had stood in the kitchen.

Quiet.

Afraid.

He had asked her what was wrong.

She smiled and said:

"Nothing."

But she had looked at him like she was saying goodbye.

At the time, he thought she was scared because of the accident.

Now he wondered.

Maybe she knew.

Maybe she knew she wouldn't come home.

Adrian looked at Clara.

"What else did she hide from me?"

Clara didn't answer.

That was an answer itself.

Adrian's anger returned.

"Tell me."

Clara took a breath.

"Isabella found out Daniel wasn't dead."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

"She discovered he was working with someone."

"Who?"

Clara looked at Emma.

Then away.

"I don't know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because Isabella didn't know either."

Adrian shook his head.

"My wife knew everything."

Clara's voice softened.

"No."

She looked at him.

"She knew enough to know she was in danger."

That sentence stayed in his mind.

Enough.

Not everything.

Not enough to save herself.

Not enough to warn him.

But enough to protect Leo.

Adrian walked toward the restaurant door.

"We go to my house."

Clara immediately stopped him.

"No."

"Leo's there."

"Adrian."

"My son is there."

Emma stepped forward.

"Maybe that's what they want."

He stopped.

She continued.

"If they took him to make you angry, going there without thinking is exactly what they expect."

Adrian stared at her.

The waitress.

The woman he had met hours ago.

The woman who somehow knew his son.

The woman carrying Isabella's secret.

And somehow...

the only person making sense.

"What would you do?"

Emma looked at him.

"I would find what Isabella wanted you to find."

Adrian looked down at the note.

The hidden message.

The missing box.

The secret under the floor.

Leo's words.

The one place Isabella told him never to open.

"The house."

Clara nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian turned.

"Take me there."

Thirty minutes later, Adrian stood inside his home.

The place where he had lived with Isabella.

The place where he had raised Leo.

The place where he thought he knew every corner.

But now every room felt different.

Like it was hiding something.

Marcus arrived with two men.

"Boss."

Adrian looked at him.

"Find the security logs."

Marcus nodded.

"And the basement?"

Adrian stopped.

He looked toward the hallway.

A hallway he had walked through thousands of times.

At the end was a small room.

Leo's old playroom.

Adrian walked there.

Emma followed.

Clara stayed behind.

"Is this where she kept the box?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

He had never seen anything unusual.

He opened the playroom door.

Everything was still there.

Leo's toys.

Old drawings.

Isabella's favorite chair.

Then he saw something.

A small wooden box under the carpet.

Adrian froze.

He moved closer.

The box was covered in dust.

But the lock was new.

Someone had opened it recently.

Emma whispered:

"Adrian..."

He knelt.

His fingers touched the lock.

There was a small engraving.

Three words.

"FOR LEO ONLY."

Adrian felt his heart tighten.

Isabella had prepared this.

Not after her death.

Before.

She knew.

She knew someone would come.

He opened the box.

Inside was a photograph.

A key.

And a small recording device.

Adrian picked up the photo first.

It showed Isabella.

Leo.

And another person standing behind them.

Adrian's hand shook.

Because he knew that face.

He knew it better than anyone.

The man who had disappeared.

The man who had supposedly died.

Daniel Russo.

But on the back of the photo were five words.

Written by Isabella.

"Don't trust him. He survived."

Adrian slowly looked at the recording device.

The battery light was still on.

It had been waiting.

For him.

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice.

Isabella.

"Adrian..."

Everyone froze.

Her voice continued.

"If you are hearing this, then Leo is already in danger."

Adrian closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

"And the person who took him is not the person you think..."

Suddenly, the front door downstairs slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

Another sound followed.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Coming closer.

Then a man's voice echoed through the house.

A voice Adrian recognized.

A voice that should have been impossible.

"Adrian..."

The recording stopped.

May you like

And the person standing outside Leo's room whispered:

"Your wife never told you who I really was."
