Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Carried Isabella’s Secret

Adrian Black stared at the necklace in his hand.

He didn't move.

He didn't speak.

For the first time in years, the most feared man in Brooklyn looked completely lost.

The engraving reflected under the restaurant lights.

"Emma Isabella Carter."

Two names.

One person.

One impossible connection.

Emma stood frozen across from him.

Leo was still holding her hand, unaware of the storm that had just exploded inside his father's mind.

Adrian slowly lifted his eyes.

"Explain."

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Emma swallowed.

"I know how this looks."

"No."

Adrian stepped closer.

"You don't."

The bodyguard instincts inside him had already taken over.

Every detail.

Every movement.

Every breath.

He was searching for a lie.

But Emma wasn't acting.

She looked terrified.

Not of him.

Of the truth.

"Where did you get this necklace?" Adrian asked.

Emma looked down.

"I've had it my whole life."

Adrian's fingers tightened.

"Your whole life?"

She nodded.

"My mother gave it to me."

Adrian's expression changed.

"Your mother?"

Emma looked away.

"She told me never to take it off."

"Who was your mother?"

Emma didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

Adrian noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Leo looked between them.

"Are you angry?"

The small voice broke the tension.

Adrian immediately looked down.

Leo was watching him.

Not afraid.

Just worried.

Adrian knelt.

"No."

But his voice wasn't convincing.

The boy touched the necklace.

"Mommy had one too."

Adrian froze.

"What?"

Leo nodded.

"She wore one like that."

Emma looked at him.

"You knew?"

Leo touched the necklace.

"Mommy said it was special."

Adrian felt the room spinning.

Three years.

Three years of believing he knew everything about his wife.

Three years of thinking Isabella had no secrets.

And now his son was revealing things he had never heard.

Adrian stood.

"Emma."

She looked at him.

"Tell me everything."

Emma remained silent.

Adrian's patience disappeared.

"My wife left me a message saying the person who helped Leo was the only person she trusted."

He placed the necklace on the table.

"Then I find out the person helping my son has my wife's name around her neck."

Emma looked at Leo.

Then back at Adrian.

"I didn't know."

"Didn't know what?"

"That Isabella was your wife."

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

"How?"

"Because I never knew her as Isabella Black."

The words hit him.

Adrian stopped breathing for a second.

"What did you know her as?"

Emma's eyes filled with emotion.

"My aunt."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Adrian stared at her.

"No."

Emma nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"Isabella had no sister."

"I know."

"She had no family."

Emma looked down.

"That's what everyone believed."

Adrian felt anger rising.

"My wife wasn't someone who disappeared from her own family."

Emma shook her head.

"She didn't disappear."

She looked at him.

"She was hidden."

The words landed like a weapon.

Adrian stepped back.

For years, people had told him Isabella was simply unlucky.

A tragic accident.

A woman who left too soon.

But now every piece of information pointed toward something else.

Someone had controlled the story.

Someone had decided what he was allowed to know.

"Start from the beginning."

Emma took a slow breath.

"My mother was named Lily Carter."

Adrian listened.

"She had a sister."

"Isabella."

Emma nodded.

"Yes."

Adrian looked away.

"Why would she hide that from me?"

Emma's voice became softer.

"Because she was afraid."

Adrian looked back.

"Of me?"

Emma immediately shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Leo.

"Of what would happen if the wrong people found out."

Adrian glanced toward his son.

"What people?"

Emma hesitated.

"I don't know."

"That's not an answer."

"I know."

Her eyes met his.

"But it's the truth."

Adrian hated that he believed her.

Because Emma wasn't speaking like someone protecting herself.

She was speaking like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

"Why did Isabella trust you?"

Emma looked at Leo.

"Because she knew I would understand him."

"Why?"

"Because I lost someone too."

Adrian didn't ask.

He waited.

"My mother died when I was young."

A pause.

"Isabella raised me."

Adrian's expression changed.

Emma continued.

"She wasn't my biological mother. But she was the closest thing I had."

Leo looked at Emma.

"That's why Mommy knew you?"

Emma smiled sadly.

"Yes."

Adrian watched them.

The way Leo looked at her.

The way Emma spoke.

The way she touched his son's hand.

There was something familiar.

Something that reminded him of Isabella.

And that frightened him.

Because it meant Emma might truly be connected to his wife.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

Adrian answered immediately.

"What did you find?"

The voice on the other end was tense.

"Boss, I checked the hidden file."

"And?"

"There are photos."

"Of what?"

A pause.

"Isabella."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"Send them."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because the file was deleted while I was opening it."

Adrian's expression changed.

"What?"

"Someone accessed it remotely."

Nobody spoke.

"Someone knew we found it."

Adrian looked around the empty restaurant.

His instincts screamed.

Someone was watching.

"Find the source."

"I tried."

"And?"

Marcus lowered his voice.

"The signal came from a device registered under Isabella Black's name."

Adrian froze.

His wife's name.

A device that shouldn't exist.

A person who shouldn't be alive.

"Impossible."

"I know."

Marcus paused.

"But boss..."

"What?"

"The device is active."

Adrian ended the call.

Emma noticed his face.

"What happened?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he didn't know how to say it.

A dead woman had just sent a signal.

Leo suddenly spoke.

"Daddy."

Adrian looked down.

"Yes?"

"Mommy said someone would come back."

The sentence made the room colder.

Adrian crouched.

"When did she say that?"

Leo looked at Emma.

Then whispered:

"On the last night."

Adrian's heart stopped.

"The last night?"

Leo nodded.

"Mommy was crying."

Adrian went still.

He had never known that.

The official story said Isabella had been happy.

Normal.

Nothing unusual.

But his son remembered something different.

"What else did she say?"

Leo looked scared.

Adrian softened his voice.

"It's okay."

The boy whispered:

"She said..."

He stopped.

Adrian waited.

"She said if Daddy ever finds the truth..."

Leo looked toward the restaurant door.

"...the person who hurt Mommy would know."

Adrian slowly turned.

Nobody was there.

But suddenly he understood.

This was never just about Isabella's death.

Someone had been waiting.

Watching.

Making sure he never looked deeper.

Adrian walked toward the table where the letter sat.

He picked it up again.

There was one more line.

A line he had missed.

Because it was written almost invisibly at the bottom.

"If you find Emma, do not let her leave alone."

Adrian stared.

Then looked toward the door.

Emma noticed.

"What?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because the restaurant lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every light went out.

Darkness covered the room.

Leo grabbed Emma's hand.

Adrian reached inside his jacket.

A weapon.

A phone.

Anything.

Then a sound came from the entrance.

A slow knock.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

Adrian moved forward.

"Stay behind me."

The door handle turned.

Slowly.

The door opened.

And a familiar voice whispered from the darkness:

May you like

"Adrian..."

A voice he had buried three years ago.
