Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Inside the Letter

Adrian Black stared at the piece of paper in his hand.

For three years, he had seen hundreds of documents with Isabella’s name on them.

Death certificates.

Legal papers.

Business reports.

But nothing had ever made his hands shake like a single handwritten sentence.

"Adrian, if you are reading this, it means Leo finally found the person I was looking for..."

The restaurant was silent.

Nobody dared to speak.

Not the bodyguards.

Not the employees.

Not even Emma.

Everyone could feel something had changed.

Adrian slowly turned the paper over.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

The small curves of the letters.

The way Isabella crossed her "t."

The way she pressed harder on certain words.

It was her.

Impossible.

That was the only word in his mind.

Impossible.

He had watched Isabella's coffin disappear beneath the ground.

He had held her cold hand one final time.

He had stood beside Leo while his son cried for a mother who would never return.

There was no way she had left him a message.

No way.

But there it was.

A piece of her still existed.

Adrian looked at Leo.

The little boy was no longer crying.

He sat beside Emma, holding the cup of warm milk with both hands.

The same child who had spent twenty minutes screaming was now calm.

And that frightened Adrian more than the chaos.

Because Leo had changed the moment Emma arrived.

Almost as if he had been waiting for her.

"Where did you get this?" Adrian asked.

His voice was low.

Leo looked down.

"Mommy gave it to me."

Adrian froze.

"When?"

Leo squeezed the cup.

"Before she went away."

Every person in the room looked at Adrian.

The words were simple.

But they carried a weight nobody understood.

Adrian crouched down in front of his son.

"Leo."

The boy looked at him.

"Your mommy gave you this before she died?"

Leo nodded.

"She told me not to give it to Daddy until someone made me feel safe."

Adrian felt something tighten in his chest.

"Why?"

Leo looked confused.

"I don't know."

The boy pointed toward Emma.

"She said the right person would know."

Adrian slowly stood.

His eyes moved toward Emma.

The waitress looked just as confused as everyone else.

"I swear," Emma said quietly, "I have never seen that paper before."

Adrian studied her.

Most people lied when they were afraid.

Their breathing changed.

Their eyes moved.

Their hands shook.

But Emma wasn't acting.

She looked genuinely lost.

That made everything more complicated.

"Everyone leaves," Adrian ordered.

The employees immediately moved.

The bodyguards remained.

Adrian looked at them.

"Everyone."

The guards hesitated.

"Sir..."

"Now."

They obeyed.

Within moments, the restaurant became empty.

Only Adrian, Leo, and Emma remained.

The powerful mafia boss.

His young son.

And a waitress who somehow knew how to reach the child nobody could.

Adrian placed the letter on the table.

"You need to explain."

Emma looked at him.

"I don't know what I need to explain."

"You were the first person he trusted after three years."

She lowered her eyes.

"I didn't do anything special."

Adrian almost laughed.

Almost.

Because in his world, nothing happened without a reason.

"People don't change my son's behavior by accident."

Emma looked at Leo.

Then back at Adrian.

"Maybe your son wasn't angry."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

"He was scared."

Those two words hit harder than expected.

Adrian looked away.

Because deep down, he knew she was right.

Everyone had been trying to stop Leo's behavior.

Nobody had tried to understand it.

Emma slowly touched the letter.

"Did your wife write this?"

Adrian nodded.

"Isabella."

The name felt strange coming out loud.

He rarely said it anymore.

Not because he forgot her.

Because saying it reminded him of everything he lost.

Emma looked at the handwriting.

"She must have trusted you."

Adrian stared at her.

"You didn't know my wife."

"No."

Emma paused.

"But I think I know what kind of person she was."

Adrian said nothing.

Emma looked at Leo.

"A mother who leaves a message for her child three years later isn't someone who wanted to disappear."

The room became colder.

Adrian's expression changed.

Because that thought had haunted him.

Everyone had told him Isabella's death was an accident.

Everyone told him there was nothing else.

But Isabella had left a message.

A secret.

And she had chosen the exact moment someone would find it.

Adrian picked up the letter again.

There was more writing underneath the first sentence.

He had missed it because his hands were shaking.

He continued reading.

"If Leo gives you this, listen carefully. The person who helps him is the only person I trust."

Adrian stopped.

His eyes narrowed.

"The only person she trusted?"

Emma stepped closer.

"Who was she talking about?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

He read the next line.

"Do not trust anyone who tells you my death was an accident."

The air disappeared from the room.

Adrian read it again.

And again.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

For three years, he had accepted the official story.

A car accident.

A wet road.

A mistake.

But Isabella was telling him something else.

Someone had lied.

Someone had convinced him to stop searching.

Someone had hidden the truth.

Leo suddenly grabbed his father's sleeve.

"Daddy."

Adrian looked down.

"Yes?"

"Mommy was scared."

The words came quietly.

Adrian froze.

"When?"

Leo looked at the floor.

"Before she went away."

Adrian felt his heart drop.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Leo's eyes filled with tears.

"Mommy said bad people were listening."

Adrian immediately stood.

His entire body changed.

The sadness disappeared.

The businessman disappeared.

The father disappeared.

The mafia boss returned.

"Who told you that?"

Leo looked frightened.

Adrian immediately softened.

"It's okay. Daddy is here."

The boy whispered:

"She said someone would try to take me."

Adrian looked at Emma.

Then at the letter.

Then at his son.

A thousand possibilities rushed through his mind.

Someone inside his organization.

Someone close to Isabella.

Someone who knew about Leo.

Someone who had been hiding the truth.

Adrian reached for his phone.

He called his most trusted man.

"Marcus."

The voice answered immediately.

"Yes, boss."

"I need Isabella's old files."

A pause.

"Which ones?"

"All of them."

Another pause.

"Sir, those files were closed three years ago."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

"Open them."

"Boss..."

"Did you hear me?"

"Yes."

Adrian ended the call.

Emma watched him.

"You think someone hurt her?"

Adrian looked at the letter.

"I think someone wanted me to stop asking questions."

Emma was quiet.

Then she said something that made him look at her.

"What if your wife knew you would stop?"

Adrian stared.

"What?"

"What if she knew you would believe the accident story?"

Emma looked at Leo.

"What if she left this because she knew your son would remember something you couldn't?"

Adrian didn't like how much sense it made.

Before he could answer, Leo suddenly reached toward Emma.

The little boy held her hand.

"Don't leave."

Emma looked surprised.

Adrian noticed something else.

The boy wasn't just comfortable with her.

He trusted her.

Like he had known her longer than one night.

"Have you met my son before?" Adrian asked.

Emma immediately shook her head.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Her answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Adrian watched her carefully.

Then his phone rang.

Marcus.

Adrian answered.

"What did you find?"

Silence.

Long silence.

Adrian's expression changed.

"Marcus."

The voice on the other end sounded nervous.

"Boss... I found something."

"What?"

"There was another file connected to Isabella's death."

Adrian stood still.

"Impossible."

"It was hidden."

"Where?"

Another pause.

"Inside your own office."

Adrian's face turned cold.

"Who had access?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Only three people."

Adrian's grip tightened around the phone.

"Tell me the names."

Marcus took a breath.

"The first one was you."

Adrian said nothing.

"The second was me."

The room became silent.

"And the third..."

Marcus stopped.

Adrian waited.

"Marcus."

The voice finally came.

"The third person was someone who is standing in that restaurant with you right now."

Adrian slowly turned.

Emma was still holding Leo's hand.

But on the table beside her was a small object she had dropped without noticing.

A silver necklace.

Adrian recognized it instantly.

Because Isabella had owned the matching one.

And on the back of the necklace was a name.

A name that should have been impossible.

Adrian stepped closer.

Emma looked down.

Then she whispered:

"Adrian... I can explain."

He picked up the necklace.

The engraving was clear.

It said:

"Emma Isabella Carter."
