Chapter 1 - The Waitress Who Touched the Untouchable

A three-year-old boy threw a glass across the restaurant, screaming: "Don't touch me! I want my mommy!"
When mafia boss Adrian Black arrived, he found a broken silver spoon beside his son's plate.
But three tiny letters were scratched into the bottom: "L.M.B."
Adrian suddenly realized his son had been trying to tell him something.
The entire restaurant stopped moving.
Not because of the broken glass.
Not because of the screaming child.
Because everyone knew exactly who was sitting at the center table.
Adrian Black.
The name alone was enough to silence conversations across Brooklyn.
Men who had spent years building criminal empires lowered their voices when he entered a room. Business owners who normally argued over contracts suddenly agreed with everything he said. Even his own employees knew better than to question his decisions.
But that night, Adrian Black was not a mafia boss.
He was just a father watching his son fall apart.
Leo Black had been crying for nearly twenty minutes.
The three-year-old boy sat in his father's arms, his small hands pushing away anyone who came near him. The expensive food on the table had been thrown onto the floor. The crystal glass had shattered beside the chair. The restaurant staff stood frozen, afraid to move without permission.
Adrian held his son tightly.
"Leo," he said quietly. "Look at me."
The boy buried his face against his father's chest.
"No."
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.
He was used to fear.
He was used to people obeying him before he even spoke.
But none of that mattered when the person in front of him was his own child.
"Bring the doctor," Adrian ordered.
One of his bodyguards immediately reached for his phone.
Another employee rushed toward the kitchen.
Everyone moved quickly.
Everyone except Leo.
The little boy screamed louder.
"No doctors! No people! I want Mommy!"
The words hit Adrian harder than any weapon ever had.
Three years.
Three years since his wife, Isabella, had died.
Three years since Leo had stopped saying her name.
Adrian looked down at his son.
He still remembered the day Isabella was buried.
He remembered holding Leo's tiny hand while everyone around them cried.
He remembered promising a child who was too young to understand:
"I'll protect you."
But lately, Adrian had started wondering if he had failed.
Leo had become quieter every month.
He stopped playing with other children.
He stopped sleeping through the night.
And whenever someone tried to ask about his mother, he would cover his ears and cry.
The restaurant manager approached carefully.
"Mr. Black..."
Adrian looked up.
The manager immediately stopped walking.
"Speak."
The man swallowed.
"Maybe we should close the restaurant for tonight."
Adrian glanced around.
Every customer was watching.
Some looked afraid.
Some looked curious.
But nobody looked away.
Everyone wanted to see what would happen when the most powerful man in the room couldn't control a three-year-old child.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Everyone leaves."
The manager nodded immediately.
Within seconds, staff began guiding customers out.
The restaurant slowly emptied.
Only Adrian, his son, his bodyguards, and a few employees remained.
But Leo continued crying.
Nothing worked.
The bodyguards offered toys.
Leo threw them away.
The chef made his favorite meal.
Leo refused to look at it.
Adrian offered to take him home.
Leo screamed even louder.
"I want Mommy!"
Adrian lowered his head.
For the first time in years, he looked completely helpless.
Then someone spoke.
"Maybe he doesn't need someone to control him."
Everyone turned.
A young waitress stood near the entrance.
She was holding a tray with a small cup of warm milk.
The room went silent.
The manager's face changed immediately.
He rushed toward her.
"Emma, don't."
The young woman stopped.
She looked at him.
"Why?"
The manager lowered his voice.
"That is Adrian Black's table."
Emma looked toward Adrian.
She saw the expensive suit.
The bodyguards.
The fear on everyone's faces.
But then she looked at Leo.
A little boy crying for someone he had lost.
And suddenly, she didn't see a dangerous man.
She saw a scared child.
"I know who he is," Emma whispered.
The manager shook his head.
"You don't understand."
"No," Emma replied softly. "I think I do."
Adrian heard every word.
His eyes moved toward her.
Most people avoided looking directly at him.
Emma didn't.
That surprised him.
"Who are you?" Adrian asked.
Her hands tightened around the cup.
"Emma Carter."
"And you think you can do what my employees couldn't?"
The question was cold.
Everyone in the room expected her to step back.
Instead, Emma looked at Leo.
Then she looked back at Adrian.
"No."
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
"No?"
Emma shook her head.
"I don't think I can fix him."
The room became even quieter.
"Then why are you here?"
Emma took a slow breath.
"Because I don't think he's broken."
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Adrian studied her face.
He had spent years reading people's intentions.
Everyone wanted something from him.
Money.
Power.
Protection.
Nobody approached him without a reason.
But this woman looked different.
She looked afraid.
Yet she stayed.
That bothered him more than if she had threatened him.
"Five minutes," Adrian said.
The bodyguards looked shocked.
"Sir?"
Adrian didn't look away from Emma.
"She has five minutes."
Emma nodded.
Then she slowly walked toward Leo.
Every step felt heavier.
The bodyguards watched her carefully.
The employees watched her nervously.
Adrian watched her silently.
Emma stopped a few feet away from the child.
She didn't touch him.
She didn't force him to look at her.
She simply sat down on the floor.
Leo continued crying.
But slightly quieter.
Emma placed the cup of warm milk beside her.
"My name is Emma," she whispered.
Leo ignored her.
"I don't like loud restaurants either."
The boy slowly stopped moving.
Emma smiled gently.
"When people get too loud, I usually want to hide too."
Leo looked at her for the first time.
Adrian noticed.
A tiny movement.
A tiny reaction.
But it was something nobody else had achieved.
Emma picked up the cup.
"This is warm milk."
Leo stared at it.
"My mom used to make it for me when I was scared."
The moment she said that, Leo froze.
Adrian noticed immediately.
Because Leo had never reacted to anyone mentioning their own childhood before.
Emma continued softly.
"Did your mommy make warm milk too?"
Leo's lips trembled.
Everyone held their breath.
Then the little boy whispered:
"She called it sleepy milk."
Adrian's expression changed.
He had never heard Leo say that before.
Not once.
Emma looked surprised.
"Sleepy milk?"
Leo nodded slowly.
"She said it helped bad dreams go away."
Adrian looked down.
His hands tightened.
Because Isabella had said the same thing.
A phrase only she used.
A phrase nobody else knew.
Not the doctors.
Not the family.
Not even Adrian's closest people.
Only Isabella.
Emma handed Leo the cup.
This time, he accepted it.
The entire room stared.
The child who refused everyone...
had taken milk from a stranger.
Adrian stood slowly.
He didn't know what shocked him more.
That Emma had calmed his son.
Or that his son had trusted her.
Leo took another sip.
Then he looked at Emma.
"Are you coming back tomorrow?"
The question almost broke Adrian.
Because Leo had not asked anyone to come back since Isabella died.
Emma looked at him softly.
"I don't know."
Leo lowered his eyes.
Adrian stepped forward.
"She will."
Emma looked at him.
Their eyes met.
For the first time, Adrian Black didn't look like the most feared man in Brooklyn.
He looked like a father who had just found a small piece of hope.
But that feeling lasted only a few seconds.
Because Leo suddenly reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
Adrian frowned.
"Where did you get that?"
Leo looked at his father.
Then he whispered:
"Mommy told me to give this to the person who made me feel safe."
Adrian took the paper.
His hands froze.
Because written on the outside was a name he had not seen in three years.
His wife's handwriting.
He slowly opened it.
May you like
And the first line made his blood run cold.
"Adrian, if you are reading this, it means Leo finally found the person I was looking for..."
