Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden Beneath The Mansion

The basement door slammed shut.
Luca turned immediately.
"Mom?"
No answer.
He rushed back up the stairs.
The door would not open.
He pulled harder.
Nothing.
The old lock had activated from the outside.
Someone had trapped him below.
But Luca Moretti had spent his entire life escaping situations that were designed to destroy him.
And this time was no different.
He stepped away from the door.
His eyes moved back to the wooden box.
The message from his father was still in his hand.
Your mother knows who killed me.
For six years, Luca had lived with one certainty.
His father was murdered by enemies.
That belief had shaped every decision he made.
Every deal.
Every war.
Every person he eliminated from his life.
But now everything was changing.
Because the person who knew the truth was not an enemy.
It was his mother.
The woman who taught him right from wrong.
The woman who told him honesty mattered more than power.
The woman who had looked him in the eyes tonight and still hidden the truth.
Luca opened the file inside the box.
The first page contained a photograph.
His father.
Standing beside Elena.
But they weren't smiling.
They were inside a room Luca had never seen before.
The date was six years ago.
Three days before his father's death.
Below the picture was a handwritten note.
"Elena finally told me the truth."
Luca frowned.
He turned the page.
Another photograph.
This time, it was his mother meeting someone.
A man.
The image was blurry.
But Luca recognized the watch on his wrist.
The same watch Victor Salvatore wore every day.
His uncle.
His father's closest friend.
Luca's breathing slowed.
"No..."
He looked through the remaining pages.
Financial records.
Private meetings.
Encrypted messages.
And then he found something that made his blood run cold.
A document signed by his father.
A document proving that Victor had access to every account in the Moretti organization.
Including the accounts that had been drained before his father's death.
Luca stared at the signature.
The betrayal was no longer a suspicion.
It was real.
But one question remained.
Why had his father written that Elena knew?
Above the basement, Elena stood in the hallway.
Victor was facing her.
Neither of them spoke.
The mansion was silent.
Too silent.
"You shouldn't have let him find the box."
Elena looked at him.
"I didn't."
Victor smiled slightly.
"But you knew where it was."
She looked away.
"Yes."
Victor stepped closer.
"You promised his father."
"I promised to protect Luca."
"And you failed."
Those words hit her harder than any threat.
Elena looked at Victor.
"You were the one who killed him."
The air changed.
Victor's expression became colder.
For the first time, the mask disappeared.
"You still believe that?"
"I know what I saw."
Victor laughed quietly.
"No."
He shook his head.
"You saw what I wanted you to see."
Elena froze.
"What does that mean?"
Victor walked toward the basement door.
"It means your husband wasn't killed by me."
He stopped.
"He was killed because he trusted the wrong woman."
Elena's face changed.
"Don't."
"You know it's true."
"No."
Victor looked at her.
"Tell Luca what happened that night."
Elena remained silent.
"Tell him why his father came home early."
Silence.
"Tell him why his father was holding a gun."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
Victor continued.
"Tell him why the last person your husband called was you."
"Stop."
"Tell him."
Elena looked toward the basement door.
Because she knew.
Luca was hearing everything.
Below the mansion, Luca stood frozen.
The sound traveled through the old walls.
Every word.
Every accusation.
Every secret.
His mother had not been protecting him from the truth.
She had been protecting the truth from him.
He looked at the basement walls.
Then he noticed something.
A small red light.
A camera.
Hidden in the corner.
Someone was watching.
Luca walked closer.
The camera moved.
Following him.
He stared directly into the lens.
"Whoever is watching..."
He paused.
"You wanted me to find this."
The camera stopped moving.
Then the screen beside it turned on.
A video appeared.
His father.
Alive.
Sitting behind the same desk.
The same desk from the photographs.
Luca couldn't breathe.
His father's voice filled the basement.
"If you are seeing this, then I was right."
A pause.
"You were always going to find the truth."
Luca stepped closer.
The recording continued.
"But there is something you need to understand."
His father's expression became serious.
"The person who betrayed me was not the person who pulled the trigger."
Luca froze.
"What?"
The video continued.
"The person who destroyed this family was someone I loved."
The screen flickered.
Then his father's final words appeared.
"Luca, do not trust anyone until you know what happened the night your mother came home covered in blood."
The recording ended.
Luca stood completely still.
His mother.
Covered in blood.
The night his father died.
A memory returned.
A memory from when he was young.
He had been seventeen.
He remembered waking up that night.
He remembered seeing his mother in the hallway.
Her hands shaking.
Her dress stained red.
But she had told him:
"Go back to bed, Luca. Everything is fine."
For six years, he had believed her.
Now he wasn't sure anymore.
Suddenly, the basement lights turned back on.
The door unlocked.
Luca pushed it open.
He walked upstairs.
Nobody spoke.
Elena looked at him.
She already knew.
She saw the pain in his eyes.
"Luca..."
He raised his hand.
"Don't."
The word was quiet.
But it hurt more than anger.
Victor watched from the side.
Waiting.
Luca looked at his mother.
"Did you kill my father?"
Elena's face broke.
"No."
The answer came instantly.
But Luca didn't move.
"Then tell me what happened."
She looked down.
"I can't."
Luca stared.
"Can't?"
Her voice trembled.
"Because if I tell you, you will never look at me the same way again."
Luca stepped closer.
"Try me."
Before Elena could answer, the mansion alarm suddenly activated.
Everyone turned.
A security monitor beside the wall turned on.
A live camera feed appeared.
The screen showed the front gate.
Someone was standing outside.
Luca walked closer.
The image became clearer.
A woman.
Long blonde hair.
A familiar face.
Naomi Carter.
But she wasn't alone.
Standing beside her was another person.
Someone Luca thought had disappeared forever.
Someone whose name had been removed from every family record.
The camera zoomed in.
And Luca saw the person holding a folder containing his father's original investigation files.
Then the person slowly looked into the camera.
May you like
And whispered:
"Luca... your father never died."
