Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind The Locked Room

The door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Everyone inside the office stopped breathing.

Luca stared at the locked door beside his father's old desk.

A room that had not been opened in six years.

A room his father had personally sealed before his death.

Nobody in the Moretti family was allowed inside.

Not his mother.

Not his closest men.

Not even Luca.

Until now.

The handle turned one more time.

Click.

Luca stepped forward.

Adrian immediately grabbed his arm.

"Wait."

Luca looked at him.

"After everything I've seen tonight, you want me to wait?"

Adrian didn't let go.

"Your father built that room for a reason."

"And someone is inside it."

Adrian's expression changed.

That was the first time Luca saw real fear on his face.

Not concern.

Not caution.

Fear.

Luca pulled his arm away.

"Who is in there?"

Adrian didn't answer.

That silence told Luca everything.

Someone knew.

Someone had always known.

And everyone had been keeping him away from the truth.

Luca reached for the door handle.

The moment his fingers touched it, a voice came through the wood.

"Luca..."

His heart stopped.

Because he knew that voice.

It wasn't a stranger.

It wasn't an enemy.

It was someone who had called him every birthday.

Someone who had held his hand when he was a child.

Someone who had kissed his forehead before every dangerous decision.

His mother.

Elena.

Luca slowly stepped back.

Adrian looked at him.

"She wasn't supposed to be there."

"What does that mean?"

Adrian looked toward the door.

"It means your mother knew about this room."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"No."

"Yes."

"My mother would never hide something like this from me."

Adrian said nothing.

And Luca hated him for it.

Because silence was becoming the only answer everyone gave him.

The door suddenly unlocked.

Nobody touched it.

The lock clicked open by itself.

Luca pushed the door slowly.

The room beyond was dark.

Cold air escaped from inside.

It smelled like old paper.

Dust.

And memories.

He stepped inside.

The room was smaller than he expected.

No weapons.

No money.

No secret files stacked everywhere.

Only one desk.

One chair.

And hundreds of photographs covering the walls.

Luca walked closer.

Then he stopped.

Every photograph was of him.

As a child.

As a teenager.

As a young man building the Moretti empire.

But there was something wrong.

The pictures weren't family memories.

They were surveillance photos.

Taken from a distance.

Some from outside his school.

Some from restaurants.

Some from meetings.

Someone had been watching him his entire life.

Adrian entered behind him.

"I found this room after your father died."

Luca turned.

"You knew?"

"I knew it existed."

"That isn't what I asked."

Adrian looked away.

"Yes."

Luca laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

He looked around.

"My entire life has been a performance."

"No."

"Then tell me what it is."

Adrian walked toward a cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside were several folders.

One folder had Luca's name.

Another had Elena's.

And another had Naomi Carter's.

Luca saw it.

His expression changed.

"Why does she have a file?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Luca grabbed the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Bank records.

Messages.

The first page was dated six years earlier.

The same month his father died.

Luca started reading.

And every line made his anger grow.

Naomi Carter had not entered his life by accident.

She had known who he was.

She had researched him.

His habits.

His weaknesses.

His family.

Everything.

But there was something even worse.

A photograph slipped from the folder.

Luca picked it up.

Naomi was standing beside a man.

A man Luca recognized.

His father's former business partner.

The same man who had testified that his father was killed by an outside enemy.

Luca stared at the picture.

"He lied."

Adrian nodded.

"Everyone lied."

Luca looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your father told me not to."

"My father?"

Adrian reached into the cabinet.

He pulled out a small recording device.

"He left instructions."

Luca froze.

"My father recorded a message?"

Adrian placed the device on the desk.

A red light blinked.

Luca pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice appeared.

A voice Luca had not heard in six years.

His father's voice.

"Luca."

The single word broke something inside him.

For a moment, he wasn't a mafia boss.

He wasn't a leader.

He was just a son hearing his father again.

"If you are listening to this, something went wrong."

A pause.

"I need you to understand something."

The recording continued.

"The person closest to you is not always the person protecting you."

Luca looked at Adrian.

Then at the file.

Then at Naomi's picture.

His father's voice continued.

"Your mother knows the truth."

Luca froze.

"What?"

Adrian looked at him.

The recording continued.

"But she made a choice."

The room became silent.

Luca stopped the recording.

"No."

Adrian looked at him.

"Luca..."

"No."

He shook his head.

"My mother was attacked tonight."

"Yes."

"Naomi was there."

"Yes."

"So someone is trying to make me believe my mother betrayed me."

Adrian didn't respond.

Because he knew Luca was right.

But then Luca looked back at the folder.

At the documents.

At the photographs.

At the evidence.

And the worst part was this:

The proof was real.

Twenty minutes later, Luca found Elena sitting in the living room.

Her hands were wrapped in a blanket.

The doctors had arrived.

She refused to go to the hospital.

She was waiting for him.

The moment Luca entered, she knew.

She looked at his face.

"You found it."

Luca stopped.

Those three words hurt more than any lie.

"You knew about the room."

Elena lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

"You knew about my father’s investigation."

A pause.

"Yes."

"You knew about Naomi."

Another pause.

"Yes."

Luca felt anger rising.

"Then why?"

His mother looked at him.

Because for the first time in his life, Luca wasn't asking as a boss.

He was asking as her son.

"Why did you let me marry someone who was destroying me?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was trying to stop her."

"By saying nothing?"

"Because I was afraid."

Luca stared.

"Of Naomi?"

Elena shook her head.

"No."

She whispered:

"Of the person Naomi was working for."

The room went silent.

Luca leaned closer.

"Who?"

Elena looked toward the security cameras.

Then toward the windows.

Like she was afraid someone was listening.

"There is something your father discovered before he died."

"What?"

"Naomi was never the leader."

Luca's expression changed.

"Then who was?"

Before Elena could answer, every light in the mansion turned off.

The security system went silent.

The cameras stopped.

The guards outside lost communication.

Then Luca's phone vibrated.

One new message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

Only one sentence appeared.

"Ask your mother why she buried the truth with your father."

Luca looked up.

Because Elena was no longer sitting in front of him.

May you like

She was staring toward the front entrance.

And slowly, the mansion doors began to open from the outside.
