Chapter 1 - The Call That Changed Everything

A woman screamed from behind a locked mansion door:

"Please, Luca! Your mother needs you!"

When Mafia boss Luca Moretti arrived, he found his mother's broken pearl necklace lying beside her wheelchair.

But one pearl had a tiny red mark carved into it:

"NM."

Luca suddenly realized this wasn't a simple attack.

The phone vibrated again.

Luca Moretti had spent most of his life learning one rule.

Trust was a luxury.

Fear was a necessity.

And love was the most dangerous weapon anyone could place in the hands of an enemy.

At 11:43 p.m. inside a private dining room overlooking the Chicago River, twelve men sat around a black marble table waiting for his decision.

They represented families that had spent years fighting over shipping routes, territory, and power. Men who rarely apologized. Men who never forgot betrayal.

Tonight, they had gathered because Luca had offered something none of them expected.

Peace.

Not because he had become soft.

Not because he had forgiven old enemies.

Because he understood something his father never did.

A war that lasted forever eventually destroyed the people fighting it.

Luca adjusted the cuff of his black suit and looked around the room.

"We end this tonight," he said calmly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody interrupted.

That was the effect Luca Moretti had on people.

He didn't need to raise his voice.

He didn't need to threaten.

His reputation spoke before he ever entered a room.

For years, people had called him ruthless. Cold. Unforgiving.

But those people had never seen him with his mother.

Elena Moretti was the only person in the world who could make Luca put down his armor.

The only person who remembered him before the power.

Before the money.

Before the violence.

She had raised him after his father died.

She had taught him that a man's strength was not measured by how many people feared him.

It was measured by who he protected.

And Luca had protected her every day.

Until that night.

A phone suddenly rang.

The sound cut through the silence.

Every man at the table looked down.

Nobody wanted to interrupt Luca during negotiations.

Nobody except one person.

Luca looked at the screen.

Naomi Carter.

His future wife.

For a moment, a small smile almost appeared on his face.

Naomi was supposed to be waiting for him at their apartment.

She had told him earlier that evening she missed him.

She had kissed him before he left.

She had whispered:

"Come home safe."

Luca answered.

"Naomi?"

But he immediately knew something was wrong.

She wasn't breathing normally.

She sounded terrified.

"Luca..."

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

There was a pause.

Then her voice broke.

"Please come home now."

Luca stood slowly.

The room went silent.

"Why?"

Naomi lowered her voice.

"She's beating your mother."

Everything stopped.

The men around the table watched their leader freeze.

Not because someone had threatened him.

Not because someone had challenged his power.

Because someone had touched the one person he could never lose.

"My mother?"

"I tried to stop her," Naomi said quickly. "I came here because I knew something was wrong. But she attacked me too. Luca, you need to see this."

Luca didn't ask another question.

He ended the call.

The peace agreement on the table no longer mattered.

The men who had traveled across states to meet him no longer mattered.

His mother mattered.

Only his mother.

He grabbed his coat.

One of the men stood.

"Luca, the agreement—"

"Tomorrow."

His voice was quiet.

But nobody argued.

Within seconds, Luca was walking through the private hallway toward the elevator.

His security team followed.

The entire building seemed to move faster when Luca Moretti decided something.

Nobody stopped him.

Nobody questioned him.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

Someone had made the biggest mistake of their life.

They had hurt Elena Moretti.

And Luca was coming home.

The drive back to the Moretti mansion felt longer than any journey Luca had ever taken.

The city lights passed outside the window.

His hands remained still.

His face remained calm.

But inside, everything burned.

He remembered his mother's voice that morning.

She had called him before breakfast.

She had laughed.

She had asked when he would finally stop working and spend a weekend with her.

Luca had promised.

"After tonight."

Those words suddenly felt heavier.

Because promises meant nothing if you arrived too late.

The gates of the mansion opened.

The security guards immediately moved aside.

Something was wrong.

Luca noticed it before he even stepped out of the car.

The front entrance was open.

Two guards were missing from their positions.

The lights inside were brighter than usual.

His hand moved toward the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.

"Stay behind me," he told his men.

The mansion doors opened.

And Naomi was standing there.

Her blonde hair was messy.

Her champagne-colored dress was torn slightly at the shoulder.

Tears covered her face.

"Luca..."

She ran toward him.

But Luca didn't move.

Something about her expression felt wrong.

Not fake.

Not exactly.

Just incomplete.

"Where is my mother?"

Naomi pointed inside.

"Living room."

Luca walked past her.

The marble floor reflected every step.

Then he saw her.

Elena.

His mother.

Sitting in an antique chair.

Her wrists were tied.

A cloth covered her mouth.

Her silver hair was messy.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

For the first time in years, Luca Moretti felt something close to panic.

"Mom."

He rushed forward.

His security team moved immediately.

They cut the ropes.

Removed the cloth.

Elena looked at her son.

But instead of relief, she looked terrified.

"Luca..."

Her voice was weak.

"Don't trust..."

She stopped.

Her eyes moved toward Naomi.

Then back to him.

Luca noticed.

And that single movement changed something.

Because Elena was not looking at Naomi like a victim looking at a rescuer.

She was looking at her like someone who knew a secret.

Luca slowly turned.

Naomi was standing near the doorway.

Her tears were still falling.

But now Luca noticed something else.

A small smile disappeared from her face the moment his mother looked at her.

Just for one second.

But Luca saw it.

And Luca Moretti had survived because he noticed things other people missed.

"What happened here?" he asked.

Naomi stepped forward.

"I told you. Someone attacked her."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Luca stared at her.

"You called me."

"Yes."

"How did you know?"

Naomi froze.

The room became silent.

She looked away.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

Luca walked toward the table beside his mother.

Something was lying there.

A broken pearl necklace.

His mother's necklace.

The one his father had given Elena before he died.

Luca picked it up.

He examined the pearls carefully.

Then he noticed something.

One pearl had a tiny red mark carved into it.

Two letters.

N.

M.

His eyes narrowed.

Naomi.

His future bride.

The woman who had called him.

The woman who claimed she was trying to save his mother.

The woman who somehow knew exactly when to bring him home.

Luca looked around the room.

The broken necklace.

His mother's fear.

Naomi's silence.

And suddenly, the story he had been told didn't make sense.

His mother reached for his hand.

"Luca..."

He looked down.

She whispered something so quietly only he could hear.

"She wanted you angry."

Luca's heart stopped.

"Why?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"Because while you were looking for someone to punish..."

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone turned.

A slow movement.

A door opening.

Luca looked toward the second floor.

His security team raised their weapons.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"Luca..."

A man's voice.

A voice Luca recognized.

A voice that should not have been there.

May you like

Because the man speaking had been dead for six years.

And then the lights upstairs turned on.
