Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Returned From The Grave

The woman standing at the end of the hallway was alive.

Nora couldn't move.

She couldn't speak.

Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.

The woman was holding Daniel's wedding ring.

The same ring Nora had placed in the small box after his funeral.

The same ring she had cried over for months.

The same ring she believed had been buried with him.

But now it was in someone else's hand.

Adrian slowly stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at him.

Then at Nora.

Her expression wasn't threatening.

It was filled with sadness.

"My name is Claire."

Nora felt the room spin.

Claire.

The woman from the photograph.

The woman Daniel had written about.

The woman everyone thought had died.

"You were dead."

Nora's voice came out quietly.

Claire looked down.

"That's what they wanted people to believe."

Nobody spoke.

The hallway felt frozen.

Richard looked terrified.

Victoria looked like she had seen a ghost.

Because she had.

Nora looked at everyone.

"You knew."

No one answered.

"You all knew she was alive."

Victoria finally spoke.

"Nora, listen to me."

"No."

Nora looked at her.

"I listened for three years."

Her voice became stronger.

"I listened when you told me Daniel was gone."

She pointed toward Claire.

"I listened when you told me there was no mystery."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"But she is standing right there."

Claire lowered her eyes.

"I never wanted you to suffer."

Nora turned toward her.

"Then why did you let me?"

The question hurt everyone in the room.

Because nobody had an answer.

Claire stepped closer.

"I didn't have a choice."

Nora almost laughed.

"Everyone says that when they make choices that hurt other people."

Claire accepted the words.

Because she knew Nora was right.

Adrian watched the two women carefully.

He understood something.

This wasn't a simple betrayal.

There were too many secrets.

Too many people protecting something.

"Claire."

She looked at him.

"What happened the night Daniel disappeared?"

Claire's expression changed.

Pain crossed her face.

"Daniel found out the truth."

"What truth?"

She looked toward the hidden room.

"The truth about the Whitmore family."

Richard closed his eyes.

Victoria immediately interrupted.

"Stop."

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time, Victoria wasn't pretending.

She was scared.

"Victoria," Adrian said calmly, "you have spent years controlling this story."

Victoria looked at him.

"You don't know what you're dealing with."

Adrian stepped closer.

"Then tell us."

Silence.

Claire walked into the room.

She placed Daniel's wedding ring on the desk.

"He wasn't trying to disappear from Nora."

Nora looked at her.

"Then what was he doing?"

Claire looked directly at her.

"He was trying to keep you alive."

The words hit Nora harder than anything else.

"Alive?"

Claire nodded.

"Daniel discovered someone close to you was planning to destroy everything he built."

Nora frowned.

"Who?"

Claire didn't answer immediately.

She looked at Victoria.

That was enough.

Nora slowly turned.

"No."

Victoria looked away.

"No."

Nora shook her head.

"Don't tell me this is another misunderstanding."

Victoria remained silent.

Adrian picked up Daniel's notebook.

"The missing pages."

Claire looked at it.

"They took them."

"Who?"

Claire looked at Nora.

"Your husband knew the person responsible."

Nora's heart sank.

"Who?"

Claire whispered.

"The person who attended your funeral and cried beside you."

The room became silent.

Because suddenly everyone remembered.

Everyone who had been there.

Everyone who had comforted Nora.

Everyone who had watched her grieve.

Adrian's phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Nora noticed.

"Who is it?"

Adrian didn't answer.

He showed her the phone.

A message had arrived.

From an unknown number.

A picture was attached.

Nora opened it.

It was Daniel.

Alive.

Standing outside a building.

But that wasn't the shocking part.

The date was written underneath.

Three days after his funeral.

Nora covered her mouth.

"He was there?"

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't he come home?"

Claire looked away.

"Because he tried."

Nora looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

Claire took a breath.

"Daniel came back the night after the funeral."

Nora froze.

"What?"

"He stood outside your house."

The pain in Claire's voice was obvious.

"He watched you through the window."

Nora's eyes filled.

"Why?"

Claire looked at her.

"Because someone was already inside."

A cold feeling moved through Nora.

"Someone?"

Claire nodded.

"Someone who knew Daniel was alive."

Adrian looked toward the entrance.

"Who was inside the house?"

Claire didn't answer.

She walked toward the hidden desk.

She opened a drawer.

Inside was another photograph.

She handed it to Nora.

Nora looked down.

The picture showed her home.

Her bedroom.

Taken from outside.

Her heart stopped.

On the back was a date.

The night Daniel disappeared.

And beneath it were five words.

"He watched you sleep."

Nora dropped the photograph.

Someone had been inside her house.

Someone had been close to her.

Someone Daniel was trying to protect her from.

Adrian picked up the picture.

His expression became darker.

"Where did you get this?"

Claire looked at him.

"Daniel left it for me."

"Why?"

"Because he knew if anything happened to him, I would be the only person who could prove the truth."

Nora looked at Claire.

"Then why didn't you come to me?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Because the person hunting Daniel was watching you."

Nora stepped back.

"Who?"

Claire opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every light in the mansion suddenly turned off.

Darkness filled the hallway.

A second later, a loud crash came from the hidden room.

Adrian immediately moved.

"Stay here."

Nora followed him anyway.

When the emergency lights turned on, everyone froze.

The hidden room had been searched.

Files were everywhere.

The notebook was gone.

And on the wall, written in fresh black ink, was a message.

Nora walked closer.

Her hands trembled.

Because the handwriting wasn't Daniel's.

It was someone else's.

Someone who had been inside the room moments earlier.

The message said:

"Daniel wasn't hiding from us."

A pause.

May you like

Then underneath:

"He was hiding you from your father."
