Chapter 4 - The Room Where They Buried The Truth

Nora stood in the middle of the dining room holding Daniel's letter.
The words were still in front of her.
Don't trust Adrian.
For a few seconds, she couldn't hear anything else.
Not the whispers.
Not the movement of the guests.
Not even her own breathing.
Because the one person who had sat beside her when everyone else walked away had just been questioned by the one person she loved most.
Her husband.
A man who was supposed to be dead.
Adrian watched her carefully.
He didn't look angry.
He didn't look offended.
He looked like someone who had just discovered a piece of a puzzle he wasn't expecting.
"Nora."
She looked up.
"What?"
Adrian pointed toward the letter.
"Read the bottom."
She looked down again.
The second message.
Your husband is waiting for you in the room where they buried the truth.
Nora swallowed.
"What room?"
Nobody answered.
But Victoria did something small.
Something almost invisible.
She stepped backward.
Adrian noticed.
"So you know."
Victoria shook her head.
"I don't."
"You do."
"No."
Her voice became louder.
"You don't understand what you're dealing with."
Adrian's expression remained calm.
"Then explain it."
Victoria looked at Nora.
And for the first time, Nora saw something different in her eyes.
Not judgment.
Not superiority.
Fear.
"Nora, you need to leave."
The words shocked everyone.
Nora stared at her.
"Leave?"
Victoria nodded.
"Go home. Forget this happened."
Nora almost laughed.
Forget?
How could she forget?
She had spent three years waking up beside an empty pillow.
Three years wondering if she could have done something differently.
Three years believing the last conversation she had with Daniel was truly the last one.
And now people were asking her to forget.
"No."
The room became silent.
Nora looked at Victoria.
"I spent years being quiet because I thought that was what a good person did."
Her fingers tightened around the letter.
"I stayed quiet when your family made me feel unwanted."
She looked around the room.
"I stayed quiet when everyone stopped calling after Daniel died."
Her eyes returned to Victoria.
"I stayed quiet when people looked at me like I was the reason he was gone."
Nora took a breath.
"But I am not staying quiet anymore."
Adrian watched her.
And something changed in his expression.
Respect.
Not pity.
Not sympathy.
Respect.
Because Nora wasn't the woman everyone thought she was.
She wasn't weak.
She had simply been surrounded by people who benefited from her silence.
Adrian turned toward Victoria.
"Take us to the room."
Victoria looked at him.
"I can't."
"Why?"
She didn't answer.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Because Daniel is there?"
Victoria's face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Nora noticed.
And her heart stopped.
"Daniel is alive?"
Nobody spoke.
That silence was the answer.
Nora closed her eyes.
The world felt unreal.
She wanted to be angry.
She wanted to scream.
But underneath everything was one painful question.
Why?
Why would Daniel let her suffer?
Why would he allow her to believe she had lost him?
Adrian gently took the letter from her hand.
"Nora."
She looked at him.
"I don't know why he wrote that warning."
His voice was honest.
"But I know one thing."
"What?"
"Someone wanted you to find this."
Nora looked at the letter.
"Who?"
Adrian looked toward the hallway leading deeper into the mansion.
"Let's find out."
The Whitmore mansion was larger than Nora remembered.
Not because she had never been there.
Because that night it felt different.
Every hallway felt like it was hiding something.
Every closed door looked like it contained a secret.
Victoria walked ahead of them.
Her steps were slow.
Reluctant.
Like every step was taking her closer to something she had spent years avoiding.
Richard followed behind.
His face was filled with regret.
Nora noticed.
"Richard."
He stopped.
"What?"
"Did Daniel ask you to protect me?"
Richard looked away.
That was enough.
Nora's voice became softer.
"You knew."
Richard didn't deny it.
"I knew something was wrong."
"How long?"
He hesitated.
"Since the night Daniel disappeared."
Nora froze.
"Disappeared?"
Richard looked at her.
"He wasn't killed."
The words hit harder than she expected.
Because she had spent years mourning someone who had never truly left.
"Then why did everyone tell me he was dead?"
Richard looked down.
"Because Daniel wanted it that way."
Nora stopped walking.
"What?"
Richard's eyes filled with guilt.
"He said if you knew the truth, you would become a target."
Nora felt anger rising.
"A target for what?"
Nobody answered.
Adrian looked at Richard.
"Who was after him?"
Richard remained silent.
Adrian's voice became colder.
"Richard."
The man finally spoke.
"The Whitmore family."
Nora stared.
"What?"
Richard looked at the floor.
"Not everyone."
He corrected himself.
"But someone inside the family."
The hallway suddenly felt smaller.
The people Nora had trusted.
The people who had hugged her at Daniel's funeral.
The people who had told her they were sorry.
One of them had been responsible.
They finally reached the end of the hallway.
There was an old wooden door.
Nora had never seen it before.
Victoria stopped.
"This is it."
Adrian looked at the door.
"The room where they buried the truth."
Victoria nodded slowly.
"My father built this room."
Nora frowned.
"Why?"
Victoria looked at the door.
"To hide things nobody was supposed to find."
Adrian reached for the handle.
Before he touched it, Nora noticed something carved into the wood.
A small symbol.
A circle.
With a line through the center.
Her breath caught.
She knew that symbol.
Daniel had drawn it years ago.
On a birthday card.
She remembered asking him what it meant.
He had smiled.
"Just something from my past."
At the time, she thought nothing of it.
Now she wondered what else she never knew.
Adrian opened the door.
Slowly.
The room beyond was dark.
Cold air moved through the hallway.
Nora stepped closer.
Inside was a desk.
Shelves.
Old files.
And dozens of photographs.
All connected to Daniel.
She walked inside.
Her eyes moved across the room.
Then stopped.
On the wall.
There was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
Not old.
Not from years ago.
A photograph taken after Daniel's supposed death.
Nora walked toward it.
Her hands started shaking.
Because Daniel was in the picture.
Alive.
Standing outside a building.
And beside him was the same woman from the old photograph.
Claire.
But that wasn't what made Nora stop.
It was the person standing behind them.
Someone Nora knew.
Someone who had stood beside her at Daniel's funeral.
Someone who had cried with her.
Adrian noticed the change in her face.
"Nora?"
She couldn't speak.
She pointed at the photograph.
And whispered one name.
"That's impossible."
Adrian looked closer.
Then his expression changed.
Because the person in the photograph was not supposed to be there.
It was someone who had died years before Daniel.
Someone whose grave Nora had visited herself.
And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note:
"Daniel wasn't the only one who came back."
Nora stepped backward.
Her hand touched the desk behind her.
Then she felt something underneath her fingers.
A hidden button.
She looked at Adrian.
May you like
Neither of them moved.
Then the wall beside the photograph slowly began to open...
