Chapter 5 - The Person Who Was Never Supposed To Return

The hidden wall opened slowly.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The sound of old machinery moving inside the mansion felt louder than anything else.

Nora stood frozen.

Her eyes remained fixed on the opening behind the photograph.

A secret room.

Hidden behind a wall.

Inside Daniel's private office.

A place nobody had ever told her existed.

Adrian stepped in front of her slightly.

Not blocking her.

Protecting her.

"Stay behind me."

Nora looked at him.

For a moment, she wanted to listen.

But then she remembered everything.

The lies.

The secrets.

The years she spent believing she knew the people around her.

"No."

Adrian looked back.

"Nora."

"I spent three years standing outside doors people closed on me."

Her voice shook.

"But not anymore."

She walked past him.

And entered the hidden room.

The air inside was colder.

The walls were covered with documents.

Photos.

Records.

Everything Daniel had been hiding.

Nora slowly looked around.

There were dozens of pictures.

Daniel meeting different people.

Daniel traveling.

Daniel watching places she had never seen.

A completely different life.

A life that existed while she thought he was simply her husband.

Her heart hurt.

Not because Daniel had secrets.

Because she suddenly realized how much pain he must have carried alone.

Adrian picked up a folder from the desk.

The name written on it made him stop.

"Whitmore Foundation."

Richard walked closer.

"What is it?"

Adrian opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Payments.

Names.

Dates.

And one name appeared again and again.

Victoria Whitmore.

Nora looked at Richard.

"Your family was involved in this?"

Richard looked devastated.

"I didn't know everything."

"But you knew something."

Richard didn't answer.

Nora looked away.

The betrayal felt heavier than anger.

Because she had trusted these people.

She had considered them family.

Then Adrian found something else.

A small black notebook.

The cover was damaged.

But the handwriting was familiar.

Daniel's.

Nora immediately recognized it.

"That's his."

Adrian handed it to her.

She opened the first page.

The first sentence made her stop.

"If Nora is reading this, then they failed to keep her away from the truth."

Her fingers tightened around the notebook.

She continued reading.

"My wife deserves to know why I disappeared."

Nora's eyes filled.

Not with sadness.

With confusion.

Because Daniel had written those words while knowing she would eventually find them.

He knew.

He planned for this moment.

The next pages were filled with details.

Names.

Meetings.

Warnings.

Daniel had discovered someone inside the family was moving money through illegal operations.

He had tried to expose them.

But someone found out.

Someone threatened him.

Someone threatened Nora.

That was why he disappeared.

That was why he allowed everyone to believe he was dead.

To protect her.

But one question remained.

Why didn't he come back?

Nora turned the page.

Then stopped.

There was a section ripped out.

Several pages had been removed.

Someone had taken the most important part.

Adrian noticed.

"Someone got here before us."

Nora looked at the empty space.

"Who?"

Nobody answered.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

A quiet step.

Everyone froze.

Adrian immediately closed the notebook.

Richard looked toward the door.

"Someone followed us."

The footsteps stopped.

Adrian moved silently toward the entrance.

Nora watched him.

For the first time, she understood why people feared him.

Not because he was cruel.

Because he was always prepared.

He opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

But something was lying on the floor.

A small envelope.

Adrian picked it up.

No name.

No address.

Only one sentence.

"She is awake."

Nora looked confused.

"Who?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

And it wasn't Daniel's.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone from the photograph.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.

Adrian slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a single picture.

He looked at it.

Then his expression changed.

Nora stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Adrian turned the photograph around.

Nora saw herself.

Not from that night.

Not from years ago.

A recent picture.

Taken while she was sleeping.

Her blood went cold.

Someone had been watching her.

For a long time.

On the back of the picture were six words.

"Ask your husband why I survived."

Nora stared.

"Who wrote that?"

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

Then at the hidden room.

"The person Daniel was trying to protect you from."

Richard whispered.

"No."

Everyone turned.

Richard's face had lost all color.

Because he knew exactly who it was.

Nora stepped toward him.

"Richard."

He couldn't look at her.

"Tell me."

His silence became unbearable.

"Richard, tell me who that is."

Slowly, he lifted his eyes.

And whispered a name Nora had never expected to hear.

"The woman who died the same night Daniel disappeared."

A cold silence filled the room.

Adrian looked back at the photograph.

Then at the hallway.

Because someone was standing at the end of it.

Watching them.

A woman.

Alive.

And she was holding Daniel's wedding ring...

May you like

She whispered one sentence.

"Nora, he never left you. He was running from me."
