Chapter 2 - The Envelope Nobody Wanted Her To Find

The woman holding the envelope froze when Adrian Blackwood told her to put it back.
For a moment, the entire dining room seemed to stop breathing.
The guests who had spent the evening pretending not to notice Nora suddenly became very interested in what was happening.
The woman slowly turned around.
It was Victoria Whitmore.
Daniel Whitmore's older sister.
The woman who had welcomed Nora into the family years ago with a smile that always looked perfect but never reached her eyes.
Victoria held the envelope tightly.
"Adrian," she said calmly, forcing a small laugh. "This is a private family matter."
Adrian looked at the envelope.
Then at her.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
But somehow, it carried across the entire room.
"It stopped being private when you took something that belonged to her."
Nora looked between them.
"Wait."
She stood slightly.
"That envelope has my name on it."
Victoria smiled.
"Nora, don't make this dramatic."
Those words.
That tone.
Nora knew them too well.
The same tone people used when they wanted her to doubt herself.
The same tone that made her question whether she was being too sensitive.
Adrian noticed.
He noticed everything.
"You don't get to decide whether she is allowed to be curious about something with her own name on it."
Victoria's expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Nora slowly reached toward the envelope.
Victoria didn't move.
"Nora, trust me. You don't want to open that."
The sentence made the room colder.
Because it wasn't a warning.
It was a confession.
Nora stared at her.
"Why?"
Victoria said nothing.
That silence answered more than words could.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Give it to her."
Victoria looked around the room.
She expected someone to support her.
Someone to defend the family.
But nobody moved.
Because everyone understood something.
Adrian Blackwood was not asking.
Finally, Victoria released the envelope.
Nora took it.
Her hands trembled slightly.
Not because she was afraid.
Because after years of being ignored, she finally held something everyone else was desperate to hide.
She looked at Adrian.
"Why do you care?"
Adrian glanced at the envelope.
"Because I know what happens when people hide things from someone who deserves the truth."
The answer surprised her.
There was something in his voice.
Something personal.
But before Nora could ask, the lights above them flickered.
Everyone looked upward.
The moment passed.
Then the lights returned.
Except something had changed.
The room was no longer a celebration.
It felt like a courtroom.
And Nora was finally standing in front of evidence.
She sat back down.
Slowly opening the envelope.
Inside was not money.
Not a legal document.
Not a family invitation.
It was a photograph.
Nora pulled it out.
And her entire body went still.
It was Daniel.
Her husband.
Standing beside another woman.
A woman Nora had never seen before.
The picture was old.
Years old.
But what caught her attention was the writing on the back.
Her fingers tightened.
Adrian leaned slightly closer.
"What does it say?"
Nora turned the photograph over.
Three handwritten words stared back at her.
"She knows everything."
Her heart dropped.
Because she recognized the handwriting.
It was Daniel's.
The man she had loved.
The man everyone said had died unexpectedly.
The man whose secrets she thought she knew.
But suddenly, she wasn't sure anymore.
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
"Nora, give me that."
Nora pulled the photograph closer.
"No."
It was the first time she had ever said no to Victoria.
And everyone noticed.
Victoria's face hardened.
"You don't understand what you're looking at."
Nora looked at her.
"Then explain it."
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Adrian watched every person in the room.
He wasn't just observing Nora anymore.
He was studying the reactions around her.
The people who looked nervous.
The people who avoided eye contact.
The people who already knew what was coming.
"You all knew."
Adrian's voice cut through the silence.
Several guests looked away.
Nora felt something break inside her.
Not because of the photograph.
Because of the realization.
Everyone had been carrying a secret.
And she was the only person who wasn't invited into the truth.
"How long?" she whispered.
Victoria said nothing.
"How long did you know there was something about Daniel?"
Still nothing.
Nora stood.
Her chair moved backward against the marble floor.
"I spent three years believing I lost my husband."
Her voice became stronger.
"And you all sat across from me at family dinners pretending everything was normal."
Nobody looked at her.
That hurt more than any insult.
Because silence was a choice.
Adrian moved beside her.
Not in front of her.
Not like he was saving her.
Like he was standing with her.
A small difference.
But Nora felt it.
Then a man at the end of the table finally spoke.
It was Richard Whitmore.
Daniel's cousin.
The man who had barely spoken all night.
"Nora."
Everyone turned.
Richard looked nervous.
"I think there is something you need to know."
Victoria immediately looked at him.
"Richard."
But he continued.
"Daniel didn't die because of an accident."
The room went completely silent.
Nora felt her breath disappear.
"What?"
Richard looked at Adrian.
Then back at Nora.
"He was trying to protect someone."
Nora stared at him.
"Who?"
Richard opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, a phone on the table began ringing.
Everyone looked down.
It was Victoria's phone.
She looked at the screen.
And the color disappeared from her face.
Adrian noticed.
"Who is calling?"
Victoria didn't answer.
Nora stepped closer.
"Victoria."
Slowly, Victoria lifted her eyes.
And for the first time that night, she looked terrified.
"It's impossible."
Adrian looked at the phone screen.
"Read the name."
Victoria's hand shook.
She turned the phone around.
Nora saw the name.
And her entire world stopped.
May you like
Because the person calling was someone who was supposed to be dead...
Daniel Whitmore.
