Chapter 6 - The Mother Behind The Locked Door

The photograph fell from Adrian's hand.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Because the woman standing in the picture was impossible.
My mother.
The woman I had spent twenty years believing had abandoned me.
The woman everyone told me was gone.
She was alive.
And someone was holding a gun behind her.
I stared at the image until my eyes hurt.
"No..."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Adrian looked at me.
His expression broke.
For the first time since I met him, he looked like a man who had no idea what to do.
Not a mafia boss.
Not a powerful leader.
Just a man watching someone he cared about discover the impossible.
Richard took the phone from his hand.
His fingers trembled as he looked at the photograph.
"Where was this taken?"
Adrian checked the message.
"A private estate outside the city."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"That's impossible."
Richard looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because that location was destroyed twelve years ago."
Everyone went silent.
I looked at them.
"What location?"
Evelyn swallowed.
"The place where your mother disappeared."
My chest tightened.
"So she was there?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Adrian.
"Take me there."
His answer came immediately.
"No."
I stared at him.
"No?"
"It could be a trap."
"My mother is alive."
"Sofia."
His voice became softer.
"That's exactly why it's dangerous."
I stepped closer.
"For twenty years, I thought she left me."
My voice shook.
"I spent my entire life wondering why I wasn't enough for her to stay."
Adrian looked at me.
"She didn't leave you."
"Then prove it."
The room went quiet.
Because nobody could argue with that.
Richard looked at Adrian.
"We have to go."
Adrian turned.
"Father."
"If Vincent has her, waiting will only give him more time."
That name again.
Vincent.
The person who had been hiding behind everything.
The person who knew my mother was alive.
The person who wanted me to find the truth.
Adrian finally nodded.
"Prepare the cars."
The drive felt endless.
Nobody talked.
I sat beside Adrian in the back seat.
For the first time since the night started, we were completely alone.
The city lights passed outside the window.
Everything looked normal.
People walking.
Cars moving.
Families going home.
But my life had changed forever.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
I asked quietly.
Adrian looked at me.
"About what?"
"That my mother might be alive."
He looked down.
"Because I didn't know."
I studied his face.
"You knew something."
He didn't deny it.
"I knew there was a possibility."
"And you kept it from me."
His jaw tightened.
"Because every person who knew the truth ended up hurt."
I looked away.
"I thought you were different."
That sentence hurt him.
I could see it.
But he didn't defend himself.
Instead, he said:
"You are right."
I looked back.
"What?"
"I should have trusted you."
The honesty surprised me.
Adrian Moretti was not someone who apologized.
Not someone who admitted mistakes.
But he did.
Because this was not about power.
This was about me.
"I don't know who to trust anymore."
My voice became quieter.
He looked at me.
"Trust me."
I almost laughed.
"After everything?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
His answer was immediate.
"Because when everyone else saw you as a problem, I saw someone who needed protection."
I looked away.
Because I didn't know how to respond.
The car stopped.
Adrian looked outside.
"We're here."
The estate was hidden deep outside the city.
A large abandoned mansion surrounded by trees.
The place looked forgotten.
But Adrian immediately noticed something.
Security cameras.
Fresh footprints.
Someone was living there.
We entered carefully.
Richard and Evelyn followed behind.
The front door was already open.
That scared everyone.
Adrian raised his hand.
Everyone stopped.
Inside, the mansion was silent.
Too silent.
I looked around.
The walls were covered with old photographs.
Family photographs.
My family.
My mother.
My father.
Me.
And another person.
Vincent.
But something was different.
In every picture, Vincent was standing beside my mother.
Not like a brother.
Like someone protecting her.
"He loved her."
I whispered.
Richard looked at me.
"Yes."
"Then why?"
Nobody answered.
We continued deeper into the house.
A hallway led to a locked room.
Adrian stopped.
"What is it?"
He looked at the door.
"My father built this room."
Richard stepped forward.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"What?"
Richard's face became pale.
"This wasn't here."
Evelyn touched the door.
"There is something behind it."
I noticed something carved into the wood.
A symbol.
The same symbol from the screen.
My fingers touched it.
Suddenly, the door unlocked.
Everyone froze.
Nobody had touched the handle.
Adrian immediately moved in front of me.
The door slowly opened.
Inside was a small room.
A chair.
A table.
A camera.
And hundreds of documents.
On the wall was one sentence.
Written by hand.
"Sofia was never the target."
I stepped inside.
My heart was racing.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian picked up a file from the table.
His face changed as he read it.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
Richard grabbed the file.
Then he went completely silent.
"What is it?"
Richard looked at me.
"The people who came after your mother..."
He stopped.
"Who?"
His eyes moved to Adrian.
"They were never trying to kill her."
I felt cold.
"Then what were they trying to do?"
Richard slowly turned the page.
And the answer was written there.
A name.
A plan.
A secret that explained everything.
My mother's disappearance.
My father's death.
Adrian's father's fake death.
All of it.
I stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
Before Richard could answer, the old camera on the table suddenly turned on.
The red recording light appeared.
Everyone froze.
The screen flickered.
Then a woman's face appeared.
My mother's face.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
My knees almost gave out.
"Sofia..."
Her voice filled the room.
I couldn't breathe.
"I know you finally found this place."
Tears filled my eyes.
She looked directly at the camera.
Like she knew I would be watching.
"I am sorry."
I covered my mouth.
"My entire life, I wanted to come back to you."
The recording continued.
"But I couldn't."
Adrian watched silently.
Then my mother said something that changed everything.
"The person you trust the most is the reason I disappeared."
The room went cold.
I looked around.
At Adrian.
At Richard.
At Evelyn.
The camera continued playing.
"Do not believe anyone until you see the truth."
The screen suddenly changed.
A final image appeared.
A person standing beside my mother the night she disappeared.
The person who helped her.
The person who betrayed her.
And then my mother's voice whispered:
"Sofia..."
The recording paused.
The last frame remained.
A familiar face.
Someone standing only a few steps away from me.
Someone who had been protecting me since the beginning.
Adrian slowly looked at the screen.
Then he looked at me.
May you like
Because the person in the recording was...
him.
