Chapter 4 - The Father Who Came Back From The Grave

The door opened completely.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the person standing outside was not supposed to exist.
I stared at him.
A man with gray hair.
A scar across his left eyebrow.
A face that looked older than the photograph in his hand.
But there was something about him that made Adrian step backward.
Something that made Evelyn cover her mouth.
Something that made me realize this was not a stranger.
This was someone connected to all of this.
The man looked directly at Adrian.
"Hello, son."
Adrian's face turned pale.
I had never seen him look afraid before.
Not when the guards surrounded us.
Not when enemies threatened him.
Not even when he learned someone was hunting me.
But now?
He looked like a child seeing a nightmare become real.
"Father..."
The word escaped his mouth before he could stop it.
I froze.
His father.
The man who was supposedly murdered twelve years ago.
The man whose death started everything.
The man Evelyn said she was connected to.
The man who everyone believed was gone.
He walked into the room like he had never left.
"I know you have questions."
Adrian didn't lower his guard.
"You died."
The man smiled slightly.
"That's what everyone needed to believe."
I looked at Evelyn.
She avoided my eyes.
And that told me something.
She knew.
She had always known.
"You knew he was alive."
Evelyn slowly looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
My chest tightened.
All these years.
All these secrets.
Everyone had pieces of my life except me.
The man looked at me.
His expression changed.
Not fear.
Not surprise.
Something else.
Regret.
"Sofia."
Hearing my name from him felt strange.
Almost familiar.
"How do you know me?"
He looked at the photograph in his hand.
"Because I was there the night your mother saved you."
The room went silent again.
I felt like every answer created ten more questions.
"What happened that night?"
Nobody answered.
Then Adrian's father walked toward the desk.
"My name is Richard Moretti."
He placed the photograph down.
"And twelve years ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life."
Adrian stared at him.
"You let me believe you were dead."
Richard looked at his son.
"Because if you knew the truth, you would have gone after them."
"And?"
Richard's eyes became darker.
"And you would have died too."
I looked between them.
"What truth?"
Richard looked at me.
"The truth about your family."
I felt my hands become cold.
"My family?"
He nodded.
"Your mother wasn't running from enemies."
"She was running from someone close."
The same words again.
Someone close.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been part of my life.
I thought about every person I trusted.
Every person who had told me my mother abandoned me.
Every person who had watched me grow up.
"Who?"
Richard didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Adrian.
"Tell her."
Adrian remained silent.
"Adrian."
He looked away.
Richard's voice became heavier.
"She deserves the truth."
For a moment, I thought Adrian would refuse.
Then he walked toward the window.
"When your mother disappeared, she was investigating a group of people."
"What people?"
"People connected to your father's company."
I frowned.
"My father?"
Adrian nodded.
"Your father wasn't just a businessman."
My heartbeat increased.
"What was he?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Someone who knew too much."
The room became quiet.
Richard continued.
"Your father discovered that powerful families in this city were moving money through illegal operations."
I looked at him.
"And my mother found out?"
"Yes."
Richard picked up the old photograph.
"Your mother discovered they planned to erase everyone who could expose them."
"Everyone?"
Richard looked at me.
"Your family."
The word hurt.
Because for years, I believed I didn't have one.
I believed I was the girl nobody chose.
But now I was learning my entire life had been built on a lie.
I looked at Adrian.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
His eyes softened.
"Because I didn't know who I could trust."
I laughed bitterly.
"You mean everyone except me?"
"No."
His answer was immediate.
"I mean everyone except you."
I looked at him.
For the first time, I saw the truth in his expression.
He wasn't hiding because he didn't care.
He was hiding because he was afraid.
Afraid of losing me.
Richard walked toward the door.
"There is something else you need to see."
Adrian immediately stopped him.
"Where?"
Richard looked at him.
"The place where Sofia's mother hid the evidence."
My heart skipped.
"Evidence?"
Richard nodded.
"The evidence that can destroy the people who did this."
Adrian looked suspicious.
"Why show us now?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Then he said something that changed the room.
"Because they already know Sofia is alive."
The silence afterward felt heavier.
I looked at the windows.
The ballroom below continued as if nothing had happened.
People were laughing.
Dancing.
Celebrating.
While my entire world was falling apart.
Adrian picked up his phone.
Several messages appeared.
His security team.
All urgent.
He read them.
His expression changed.
"What?"
I asked.
He showed me the screen.
A picture.
Taken moments ago.
Outside the ballroom.
It showed me.
Standing beside Adrian.
The image had been captured before anyone knew the truth.
Before anyone knew I mattered.
Below the picture was a message.
"She was never hidden."
Another message appeared.
"She was protected."
Then a third.
"Now we take back what belongs to us."
Adrian immediately locked the phone.
"We leave."
Richard looked at him.
"Too late."
Everyone turned.
"What do you mean?"
Richard walked to the window.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Then he pointed downward.
At the ballroom entrance.
A group of men had entered.
Not guests.
Not employees.
People dressed in black.
Moving together.
Searching.
Adrian's expression became dangerous.
"They found us."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"No."
She looked terrified.
"They found her."
I felt my stomach drop.
Because every person in the ballroom had stopped moving.
Every face had turned toward us.
Toward the private balcony.
Toward me.
Then the largest screen in the ballroom suddenly changed.
The luxury event display disappeared.
A single image appeared.
An old family photograph.
My family.
My mother.
My father.
And me as a child.
The entire ballroom watched.
Then words appeared across the screen.
Sofia Bennett.
The missing daughter.
My breath stopped.
Adrian grabbed my hand.
The crowd below started whispering.
Then another line appeared beneath my name.
"The heir has returned."
I looked at Richard.
His face had gone completely pale.
Because he recognized something hidden in the corner of the screen.
A symbol.
A symbol only one person should have known.
Richard whispered:
"No..."
The lights inside the ballroom went out.
And from the darkness, a voice came through the speakers.
"Sofia..."
I froze.
Because I knew that voice.
I had heard it once before.
Twelve years ago.
The night my mother disappeared.
Then the voice said:
"Your mother never left you."
The screen changed again.
A new image appeared.
May you like
A picture of the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
And Adrian whispered the name before anyone else could speak...
