Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Never Died

Adrian stared at the photograph on his phone until the screen began to dim.
He didn't blink.
He didn't breathe.
Because for fifteen years, he had lived with the same memory.
The same funeral.
The same empty coffin.
The same words whispered by people who told him his sister Elena was gone forever.
But the woman standing outside that building was not a memory.
She was real.
Older.
Tired.
Different.
But still Elena.
Norah slowly lowered the phone from her hand.
"Adrian..."
Her voice was barely a whisper.
He looked at her.
For the first time in years, the fear in his eyes was not about an enemy.
It was about hope.
And hope was something Adrian had learned to fear more than anything.
"That isn't possible," he said.
Norah swallowed.
"I know."
"No."
Adrian shook his head.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
"I watched them bury her."
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in that room knew what that meant.
Adrian Vale had built his entire life around a grave.
Around the belief that the person he loved most had been taken from him.
The belief that there was nothing left to find.
But now Elena was standing in a photograph.
Alive.
Waiting.
"Who sent this?" Adrian asked.
Norah looked at the message again.
"Someone who knows exactly how to hurt you."
Adrian's eyes moved back to the screen.
Come alone if you want your sister back.
Three words.
Simple.
A command.
A threat.
And Adrian recognized the style immediately.
The person who sent it wasn't trying to scare him.
They were trying to remind him that they had control.
Vincent stepped forward.
"You're not going."
Adrian didn't look at him.
"Move."
Vincent's expression hardened.
"No."
The room went silent.
Nobody talked to Adrian that way.
Not when he was angry.
Not when his family was involved.
But Vincent didn't step back.
"I know what you're thinking," Vincent said. "You think this is Elena. You think you finally found the answer you've been chasing for fifteen years."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"She is my sister."
"And that is exactly why they sent it."
Vincent pointed at the phone.
"They know what Elena means to you. They know you would walk into a burning building if they put her picture inside."
Adrian looked at him coldly.
"You don't understand."
Vincent lowered his voice.
"No. I do."
A pause.
"Because I was there when they took her from you."
The words hit the room like a gunshot.
Adrian slowly turned.
"What did you say?"
Vincent looked away.
Norah noticed immediately.
She had seen that expression before.
The expression of someone who had carried a secret for too long.
"Vincent," Adrian said.
The older man stayed quiet.
"Look at me."
Slowly, Vincent did.
"I was there," he repeated.
"When Elena disappeared."
Adrian's face changed.
Not anger.
Something worse.
Betrayal.
"You told me you arrived after it happened."
"I lied."
The silence became unbearable.
Adrian walked closer.
"You lied about my sister?"
Vincent didn't move.
"I lied because I was told that if I ever told you the truth, Elena would die."
Adrian stared at him.
"Who told you?"
Vincent hesitated.
And that hesitation answered everything.
Someone powerful.
Someone still alive.
Someone who had been controlling the pieces from the beginning.
"Tell me," Adrian said.
Vincent looked at Norah.
Then back at Adrian.
"The same person who has been watching you."
The lights flickered.
Everyone looked up.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then the security alarm inside the building turned on.
A sharp sound.
A warning.
Vincent immediately reached for his weapon.
"Everyone down."
Adrian grabbed Norah and pulled her behind him.
The windows reflected the street outside.
Rain.
Cars.
People walking.
Nothing unusual.
Until Adrian saw it.
A figure standing across the street.
Watching.
Not hiding.
Not running.
Just waiting.
The person slowly lifted a phone.
Adrian's phone vibrated.
Another message.
He looked down.
One sentence.
Stop looking outside.
Look behind you.
Adrian's blood went cold.
Slowly, he turned.
The hallway behind them was empty.
At least it was supposed to be.
Then they heard it.
A woman's voice.
Quiet.
Broken.
"Adrian."
Nobody moved.
Norah covered her mouth.
Because she recognized that voice.
Adrian didn't.
Not immediately.
His mind refused to accept it.
The voice came from the dark hallway.
A woman stepped forward.
Older than the girl in his memories.
With tears in her eyes.
But unmistakably familiar.
"Adrian..."
His entire body froze.
Elena.
She was standing inside the building.
Not in a picture.
Not in a video.
Not in a memory.
In front of him.
Alive.
Vincent whispered.
"No..."
Elena looked at him.
Pain crossed her face.
"You knew."
Vincent lowered his eyes.
Adrian looked between them.
Confusion replaced anger.
"You two..."
His voice broke.
"You knew she was alive?"
Elena took a step forward.
"I tried to come back."
Adrian couldn't answer.
"I tried so many times."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"But they made sure you believed I was dead."
"Who?"
The word came out immediately.
Elena looked toward the window.
Toward the person outside.
Then back at Adrian.
"The same person who destroyed our family."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Who?"
Elena opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, every screen in the building suddenly turned on.
The television.
The security monitors.
The computers.
All of them showed the same image.
A man sitting in a dark room.
Adrian stopped.
Because he knew that face.
He had seen it before.
In old photographs.
In hidden files.
In the documents he found after Elena disappeared.
The man smiled at the camera.
"Hello, Adrian."
Nobody breathed.
The man leaned closer.
"I knew you would find her eventually."
Adrian stared.
His hands slowly became fists.
Because the voice belonged to someone who should never have been alive.
The man smiled again.
"After all..."
The screen flickered.
"And I was the one who taught Elena how to disappear."
The video paused.
A new message appeared beneath it.
Not on Adrian's phone.
On every screen in the building.
A name.
A name Adrian had spent fifteen years believing was impossible.
His father's name.
And beneath it:
"He is waiting for you."
Adrian looked at Elena.
Her face was filled with fear.
Because she knew exactly what would happen next.
The elevator behind them suddenly opened.
Nobody pressed the button.
Someone stepped out.
May you like
And Adrian heard a voice he had not heard since the night everything was taken from him.
"Son..."
