Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Behind Her Name

The hallway lights went dark.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Not Adrian.
Not Norah.
Not the security team outside the room.
Three seconds was enough time for someone skilled to enter.
Or escape.
Adrian immediately reached for the weapon hidden beneath his jacket.
Norah noticed.
Her face changed.
Not because she was afraid of him.
Because she realized the man everyone feared was finally afraid of something else.
Someone being inside his building.
Someone getting past his security.
Someone sending him a photograph from a camera angle nobody should have access to.
"Stay behind me," Adrian said.
Norah didn't argue.
The darkness disappeared as emergency lights turned on.
The hallway returned in a faint red glow.
Two security guards rushed toward them.
"Mr. Vale, we checked every floor."
Adrian looked at them.
"And?"
The guard hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Adrian stepped forward.
"Say it."
The guard lowered his voice.
"There is no one."
Norah looked confused.
"No one?"
The guard shook his head.
"The cameras show nobody entering the building."
Adrian stared at him.
Impossible.
Someone had entered.
Someone had been close enough to take that photo.
Someone had known exactly where Norah was sitting.
He looked at the security camera above the hallway.
Then at the photograph on his phone.
A thought appeared.
Not a comforting one.
The person who took the picture didn't need to enter.
They already had access.
Adrian turned toward his security chief.
"Lock down the building."
The man's expression changed.
"Everyone?"
"Everyone."
A powerful man like Adrian Vale didn't panic.
He prepared.
And preparation was what separated survivors from victims.
Norah watched him closely.
"You think someone here helped them."
Adrian didn't answer.
Because the truth was worse.
He thought someone here belonged to them.
Ten minutes later, every employee inside the building was gathered in the main security room.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The people standing there knew Adrian well enough to understand something serious had happened.
He wasn't the kind of man who interrupted his own operations without a reason.
Norah stood beside him.
Some people looked at her with curiosity.
Others with suspicion.
Adrian noticed every reaction.
Especially one.
A man near the back of the room looked away the second Norah entered.
Adrian remembered him.
Marcus Bell.
His personal assistant for six years.
The man who knew his schedule.
His meetings.
His private locations.
Adrian walked toward him.
Marcus forced a smile.
"Is there a problem?"
Adrian stopped.
"Where were you ten minutes ago?"
Marcus blinked.
"In my office."
"Alone?"
"Yes."
Adrian stared at him.
Marcus had always been calm.
Too calm.
But tonight, something was different.
A small movement.
A slight tension in his hand.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Adrian noticed.
"What happened to your hand?"
Marcus looked down.
A small cut across his finger.
"Paper."
Adrian looked at the injury.
Then at Norah.
She was staring at Marcus.
"Do you know him?" Adrian asked.
Norah shook her head.
"No."
But her expression said something else.
Adrian noticed.
Later.
Not now.
He turned away.
"Everyone can leave except Marcus."
The room slowly emptied.
When the door closed, Marcus sighed.
"Adrian, this is unnecessary."
"Is it?"
Marcus looked at him.
"You really think I would betray you?"
Adrian remained silent.
That was always his greatest weapon.
Silence.
People filled silence with mistakes.
Marcus looked toward Norah.
"She's the problem."
Norah froze.
Adrian's eyes sharpened.
"Explain."
Marcus stepped closer.
"Do you know how many people have died because of women like her?"
Norah's face changed.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus ignored her.
"You brought her here."
Adrian's voice became colder.
"Careful."
Marcus stopped.
Because he understood the warning.
Adrian didn't protect many people.
But when he chose someone, he became dangerous.
Marcus looked away.
"She doesn't know what she's carrying."
Norah stepped forward.
"What am I carrying?"
Marcus said nothing.
Adrian moved closer.
"Answer her."
Marcus laughed quietly.
"You still don't understand."
A pause.
"Elena Hayes wasn't investigating your company."
Norah's breathing stopped.
Adrian looked at him.
"What did you say?"
Marcus continued.
"She was investigating you."
The words stayed in the room.
Heavy.
Impossible.
Norah shook her head.
"No."
Marcus looked at her.
"Your sister discovered something about Adrian Vale."
Adrian's expression hardened.
"And what was that?"
Marcus looked at him.
For the first time, there was something close to pity in his eyes.
"She found out you weren't the person everyone believed you were."
Silence.
Norah looked between them.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
And he hated that.
Marcus walked toward the table and placed something down.
A small black folder.
"She left this behind."
Adrian looked at it.
"Where did you get that?"
Marcus didn't respond.
Norah stepped closer.
The folder had a symbol on it.
The same symbol from the silver ring in the rooftop video.
Adrian immediately recognized it.
His face changed.
"Where did you find this?"
Marcus looked at him.
"Your father’s old office."
The room went silent.
Adrian had spent years believing his father died before he became the man he was today.
A betrayal.
A disappearance.
A funeral.
A closed chapter.
At least, that was what he believed.
"My father has been dead for fifteen years," Adrian said.
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
One word.
One impossible word.
Norah looked at Adrian.
"What is he saying?"
Adrian opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
Photographs.
Names.
Dates.
And one picture.
A younger Adrian.
Standing beside a man.
A man he recognized immediately.
His father.
But behind the photograph was handwriting.
Not his father's.
Elena's.
Adrian, if you are reading this, it means I failed to tell you the truth.
His hand tightened around the paper.
Norah watched his reaction.
"What truth?"
Adrian continued reading.
The next sentence made his entire body freeze.
The man who raised you was not the man who saved you.
He looked up.
Marcus was gone.
The door behind him was open.
Impossible.
Nobody had entered.
Nobody had left.
Adrian ran toward it.
The hallway was empty.
Except for one thing.
A phone sitting on the floor.
Still ringing.
Adrian picked it up.
Unknown number.
He answered.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman's voice spoke.
A voice Adrian had not heard in fifteen years.
"Adrian..."
His face lost all emotion.
Because he knew that voice.
It belonged to someone who should never have been able to call him.
"Your sister was right."
Adrian couldn't speak.
The woman continued.
"And she was killed because she found out who you really are."
The call ended.
Norah stepped closer.
"Who was that?"
Adrian looked at the phone screen.
A new message appeared.
One photo.
A grave.
His father's grave.
But the name carved into the stone was different.
Adrian stared at it.
May you like
Because beneath his father's name were four words that changed everything:
HE WAS NEVER BURIED.
