Chapter 4 - The Enemy Inside His Own Organization

Adrian Vale stared at the photograph on his phone.

His father's grave.

A name carved into stone.

A date of death.

A life that Adrian had spent fifteen years accepting as finished.

But now one sentence had destroyed everything he believed.

HE WAS NEVER BURIED.

For the first time in years, Adrian felt something he hated.

Uncertainty.

Not fear.

Not weakness.

A question.

And questions were dangerous.

Because questions forced people to look backward.

And Adrian knew exactly what was waiting in his past.

People who lied.

People who disappeared.

People who killed to keep secrets buried.

He placed the phone on the table.

Norah watched him carefully.

"That was my sister's voice, wasn't it?"

Adrian didn't answer.

She stepped closer.

"You knew Elena."

"No."

The answer came too quickly.

Norah noticed.

"You said that before."

Adrian looked at her.

"And you believed me?"

"No."

A strange silence passed between them.

For some reason, that honesty made him trust her more.

Most people lied to him because they wanted something.

Norah lied because she was afraid.

There was a difference.

"Tell me everything about Elena," Adrian said.

Norah looked surprised.

"I thought you said you didn't know her."

"I thought that too."

That answer bothered her.

But she continued.

"My sister was different after she started investigating the company."

"What company?"

"Vale Holdings."

Adrian's expression changed.

His own company.

The one he inherited after his father's death.

The one he rebuilt.

The one everyone believed he created alone.

"She told me there was something hidden in the old records."

"What records?"

"I don't know."

Norah looked frustrated.

"She never trusted anyone with the whole truth."

Adrian looked away.

That sounded exactly like Elena.

Careful.

Intelligent.

Always five steps ahead.

"Before she disappeared," Norah continued, "she gave me one instruction."

"What?"

"If anything happened to her, find Adrian Vale."

Adrian looked at her.

"Why?"

Norah shook her head.

"She never explained."

A pause.

"She just said one thing."

"What?"

Norah's voice became quieter.

"She said you were the only person who could survive knowing the truth."

Adrian didn't respond.

Because he understood something.

Elena hadn't sent Norah to him because she trusted him.

She sent Norah because she knew something would eventually reach him.

Something that could destroy him.

An hour later, Adrian stood inside his private archive room.

Nobody entered this room.

Not his employees.

Not his security team.

Not even his closest allies.

The room contained everything Adrian had collected over the years.

Business records.

Photographs.

Documents.

Evidence.

Anything that could become a weapon.

Or a weakness.

Norah stood behind him.

"You keep files on everyone."

Adrian opened a drawer.

"Everyone keeps files on everyone."

He pulled out an old folder.

The label was simple.

ELENA HAYES.

Norah froze.

"You had a file on my sister."

Adrian stared at it.

"I didn't create this."

He opened it.

Inside were reports from fifteen years ago.

Missing person investigation.

Private surveillance.

Financial records.

But one page caught his attention.

A photograph.

Elena standing outside a building.

The same building from the old picture.

The same place.

The same day.

But this time, someone else was there.

Adrian.

Younger.

Standing beside Elena.

Norah looked at the image.

"You really don't remember?"

Adrian stayed silent.

Because he didn't.

And that was impossible.

Adrian remembered everything important.

Every deal.

Every betrayal.

Every person who had tried to destroy him.

But this?

Nothing.

No memory.

No conversation.

No explanation.

He flipped the page.

A handwritten note appeared.

Not Elena's handwriting.

Someone else's.

Memory removal was successful.

Adrian stopped breathing for a second.

Norah noticed.

"What is it?"

He didn't answer.

He read the rest.

Subject believes father is deceased. Subject believes organization belongs to him. Subject must never discover the original agreement.

Adrian slowly lowered the paper.

"Who wrote this?"

Norah looked at him.

"Adrian..."

He didn't hear her.

Because another thought entered his mind.

A terrifying one.

Maybe his past wasn't hidden from others.

Maybe it was hidden from him.

Adrian immediately called his oldest security contact.

Richard Cross.

The only man who had worked beside him since the beginning.

The only man Adrian trusted before he became powerful.

Richard arrived twenty minutes later.

The moment he saw Norah, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Adrian saw it.

"You know her," Adrian said.

Richard looked at him.

"No."

Another quick answer.

Adrian almost smiled.

Everyone was making the same mistake tonight.

They underestimated how much he noticed.

"Then why did you look afraid?"

Richard stayed silent.

Norah stepped forward.

"You knew my sister."

Richard looked at her.

"I knew Elena."

The room became quiet.

Adrian walked closer.

"Start talking."

Richard sighed.

"You don't want this truth."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"I didn't ask what I wanted."

Richard looked at him.

"I was there the night Elena disappeared."

Norah's face changed.

"What?"

Richard looked down.

"I tried to stop her."

"From what?"

Richard looked at Adrian.

"From finding out who your father really was."

Adrian stared at him.

"My father?"

Richard nodded.

"Your father wasn't killed."

Norah whispered:

"Then what happened?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his coat.

And placed a small object on the table.

A key.

Old.

Rusty.

With a number engraved on it.

17.

Adrian recognized it.

His father's private storage system.

A place that supposedly never existed.

Richard spoke quietly.

"Your father left this for you."

Adrian picked up the key.

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

Richard looked at him.

"Because I was ordered not to."

"By who?"

Richard's silence was enough.

Adrian's expression darkened.

"Who gave you the order?"

Richard looked toward the closed door.

Then back at Adrian.

"The same person who has been protecting your empire since the day your father disappeared."

Norah felt a chill.

"Who?"

Richard opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, every screen in the archive room turned on.

A video appeared.

Static.

Then a man's face.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Adrian stopped moving.

Because the man on the screen was impossible.

His father.

Alive.

The video began.

"Adrian."

His voice filled the room.

"If you're watching this, it means they failed to keep you away from the truth."

Adrian stepped closer.

The screen flickered.

His father continued:

"The person you trust the most has been lying to you for fifteen years."

Richard's face turned pale.

Adrian noticed.

The video continued.

"And the person who helped me disappear..."

A pause.

Then his father's eyes moved directly toward the camera.

"...is standing in the room with you right now."

Adrian slowly turned around.

May you like

Richard took one step backward.

And then the archive door behind them unlocked by itself.
