Chapter 9 - The Woman Behind The Locked Door

The door opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
For fifteen years, Adrian Blackwood had imagined this moment.
The moment he would finally learn the truth.
The moment Elena would return.
The moment the nightmare would end.
But he never imagined standing in front of an old locked room, surrounded by secrets, with two women who carried Elena's blood watching him.
The woman inside the room stepped forward.
The emergency lights revealed her face.
Older.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Adrian's entire body froze.
"Elena."
The name escaped before he could stop it.
Sadie covered her mouth.
Clara grabbed the wall for support.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because the impossible had just become real.
Elena Blackwood stood in front of them.
Alive.
But not the same woman Adrian remembered.
The woman he loved had always carried warmth in her eyes.
This woman carried fifteen years of pain.
"Adrian."
Her voice was weaker than he remembered.
But it was still hers.
The same voice that used to calm him when the entire world felt against him.
The same voice that had once told him he was more than his family's name.
He took one step forward.
Then stopped.
Because something felt wrong.
Not because she was alive.
Because she looked afraid of him.
"Why?"
It was the only word he could say.
Elena looked at him.
A thousand emotions crossed her face.
Regret.
Love.
Fear.
"I wanted to come back."
Adrian laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
"You had fifteen years."
"I know."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I had no choice."
His eyes hardened.
"Everyone says that."
The words hurt her.
He could see it.
But he couldn't stop.
"Everyone had a reason."
His voice shook slightly.
"Everyone had a secret."
"And I was the only person who didn't know anything."
Elena lowered her eyes.
"You're right."
That answer surprised him.
Because he expected an excuse.
Not an apology.
"You deserved the truth."
She looked toward Sadie.
Then Clara.
"But telling you the truth would have gotten them killed."
Sadie's eyes filled.
"Mom..."
Elena looked at her.
And everything changed.
The fear disappeared.
The years disappeared.
For a moment, she was simply a mother seeing her child again.
"My little girl."
Sadie broke.
She had spent years pretending she didn't need anyone.
Pretending she didn't miss the woman who raised her.
Pretending the empty space inside her didn't hurt.
But hearing her mother's voice destroyed all those walls.
She stepped forward.
Elena reached for her.
And Sadie collapsed into her arms.
Adrian watched silently.
Because that was the first time he had seen Sadie look like a daughter.
Not a maid.
Not a survivor.
A daughter.
Clara stood nearby.
Watching.
With tears in her eyes.
Elena looked at both girls.
"My babies."
The words were almost impossible to hear.
Because for years, she had believed she lost them.
Adrian looked away.
He needed a moment.
A moment to accept that the woman he mourned was standing right in front of him.
A moment to understand that his entire life had been built around a lie.
Finally, he looked back.
"How?"
Elena released Sadie slowly.
"I was kept here."
Adrian frowned.
"Here?"
She nodded.
"This room."
Everyone looked around.
The room was small.
Hidden.
Almost forgotten.
"You've been here?"
Elena nodded.
"Your father locked me away after I refused to give him the children."
Adrian's expression changed.
"Marcus."
Her silence answered him.
His hands tightened.
"He kept you here?"
"Not always."
She looked down.
"Sometimes he moved me."
"Where?"
"Different places."
"Why didn't you escape?"
A painful smile appeared.
"I did."
Adrian looked at her.
"How many times?"
"Three."
"And?"
"He always found me."
The room became silent.
Adrian looked toward Daniel.
"You knew."
Daniel nodded.
"I tried to get her out."
"But you failed."
Daniel lowered his head.
"Yes."
Adrian turned back to Elena.
"Why now?"
She looked at him.
"Because they found Sadie."
The answer made everyone freeze.
"They?"
Elena nodded.
"The people who have been searching for my children."
Clara stepped forward.
"Who are they?"
Elena's face became serious.
"People who believe Marcus was right."
Adrian frowned.
"My father is dead."
"His ideas aren't."
She walked toward the desk.
On it was an old file.
The same kind of file Adrian had found earlier.
She placed her hand on it.
"This is why Marcus wanted the children."
Adrian looked at the folder.
"What is inside?"
Elena hesitated.
Then opened it.
Inside were documents.
Names.
Dates.
Records.
And one page marked with a symbol Adrian recognized.
His father's private mark.
The mark used for his most dangerous operations.
Adrian read the first line.
His face changed.
"No."
Sadie looked at him.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
Because the file wasn't about the twins.
It was about him.
A psychological report.
Created when Adrian was twenty-two.
Before he became the man everyone feared.
The title was simple.
"Subject: Adrian Blackwood."
Clara looked shocked.
"Your father was studying you?"
Elena nodded.
"He wasn't building an empire."
She looked at Adrian.
"He was building a replacement."
Adrian stared at the pages.
Everything he believed about his childhood shifted.
His father's cruelty.
His training.
His isolation.
It wasn't random.
It was planned.
"He wanted me to become him."
Elena whispered:
"Yes."
Silence.
Then Adrian noticed something.
A second file beneath his.
A file with Sadie's name.
His expression changed immediately.
He reached for it.
But Elena grabbed his hand.
"Wait."
He looked at her.
"What?"
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Before you open that..."
A pause.
"You need to understand one thing."
"What?"
Elena looked at Sadie.
Then Clara.
"Marcus didn't fear the children because they were his grandchildren."
Adrian waited.
"He feared them because one of them knew what he did."
Sadie looked confused.
"Did what?"
Elena looked toward the door.
Her face suddenly changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"He's here."
Everyone turned.
Adrian immediately moved in front of the women.
"What?"
Elena whispered:
"The person who has been helping Marcus all these years."
The lights flickered.
The security alarms stayed silent.
That meant whoever entered...
Had access.
The old hallway outside filled with footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Adrian reached for his weapon.
The door behind them slowly opened.
A man's voice came from the darkness.
"Adrian."
Everyone froze.
Because Adrian knew that voice.
He had heard it every day of his childhood.
The voice of the man who taught him fear.
The voice of the man who was supposed to be dead.
And then the figure stepped into the light.
May you like
Wearing Marcus Blackwood's ring.
A ring that belonged to his father.
