Chapter 10 - The Father Who Was Never Gone

The ring was the first thing Adrian noticed.

Not the face.

Not the voice.

The ring.

Because Adrian Blackwood knew that ring better than anyone alive.

The black stone.

The silver edges.

The small scratch near the side.

A mark he remembered from childhood.

A mark his father refused to let anyone touch.

Marcus Blackwood's ring.

Adrian stared at the man standing in the doorway.

His mind rejected what his eyes were seeing.

"No."

The word came out quietly.

Almost like he was trying to convince himself.

The man smiled.

A familiar smile.

The same smile Adrian remembered from childhood.

Not warmth.

Not love.

Control.

"You always were slow to accept reality."

Elena immediately stepped back.

Sadie noticed.

"Mom?"

Elena's face was pale.

"Adrian..."

He didn't look away from the man.

"You're dead."

Marcus Blackwood tilted his head.

"That is what I wanted everyone to believe."

The room became silent.

Clara moved closer to Sadie.

Daniel's hand slowly reached toward his jacket.

Marcus noticed.

"Still protecting them, Daniel?"

Daniel froze.

Adrian looked at him.

"You knew."

Daniel didn't answer.

Again.

That silence hurt more than words.

Adrian's eyes became colder.

"Everyone knew except me."

Marcus smiled.

"That was always your weakness."

Adrian took a step forward.

"My weakness?"

"Trust."

The word hung in the air.

Marcus walked into the room like he owned it.

Like fifteen years had never passed.

Like he had never destroyed his son's life.

"You trusted Elena."

He looked at Sadie.

"You trusted strangers."

Then Clara.

"You trusted people who abandoned you."

Finally, Adrian.

"And now you want to believe you can save everyone."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But inside, something was breaking.

Because he had spent years becoming the opposite of his father.

Only to discover his father had been controlling everything from the shadows.

"You locked Elena away."

Marcus didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Sadie looked at him in horror.

"You ruined our lives."

Marcus looked at her.

Almost curious.

"You survived."

The answer made Sadie's face change.

Like she finally understood.

To Marcus, survival was enough.

Pain didn't matter.

Fear didn't matter.

Love didn't matter.

Only results.

Adrian stepped between them.

"Don't look at her."

Marcus smiled.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The part of you that still believes you are different from me."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"I am nothing like you."

Marcus walked closer.

"You think because you protect them, you are better?"

A pause.

"You built an empire with fear."

Silence.

"You destroy people who betray you."

Another pause.

"You think your reasons make you different?"

The words hit because Adrian had heard them before.

From Elena.

From himself.

The fear that maybe he had become exactly what he hated.

But then he looked at Sadie.

At the woman who had spent months hiding her pain.

At Clara, who had spent years running.

At Elena, who had sacrificed everything.

And he knew one thing.

He was not his father.

Because Marcus saw people as possessions.

Adrian saw people as people.

"You made one mistake."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"You thought I would become you."

Adrian stepped closer.

"But I became the person who will destroy everything you built."

For the first time, Marcus's smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

Fear.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

"Interesting."

Marcus looked toward the file on the desk.

"The truth is inside that folder."

Adrian followed his gaze.

"The truth about what?"

Marcus smiled again.

"About which daughter belongs to you."

The room froze.

Sadie looked at Adrian.

Clara became completely still.

Elena closed her eyes.

Adrian's voice dropped.

"What did you say?"

Marcus walked toward the desk.

"You spent years believing Elena gave you two children."

He touched the folder.

"But you never asked the most important question."

Adrian stared.

"What question?"

Marcus looked at Sadie.

Then Clara.

"Which one is actually yours?"

The silence was unbearable.

Sadie looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

Because even after everything, there was still another secret.

Another question about whether she belonged.

Adrian immediately turned toward her.

"Sadie."

But she stepped back.

Not from him.

From the situation.

"I understand."

"No."

She shook her head.

"It's okay."

"It isn't."

"You don't know that."

Her voice cracked.

And that hurt Adrian more than Marcus's words.

Because Sadie had spent her entire life wondering if she was wanted.

And now the truth was being used as a weapon against her.

Elena stepped forward.

"Marcus, stop."

Marcus looked at her.

"You still protect them."

"Because they are our children."

His expression changed.

"Are they?"

The question cut through the room.

Adrian looked at Elena.

And he saw it.

The hesitation.

Only for a moment.

But he saw it.

"Elena."

She looked away.

His heart sank.

"Tell me."

She didn't answer.

"Tell me the truth."

A tear fell down her face.

"I wanted to."

"Then why didn't you?"

Marcus laughed quietly.

"Because she was afraid."

Adrian looked at him.

"Of what?"

Marcus smiled.

"Of you."

Nobody moved.

Elena whispered:

"No."

But Marcus continued.

"She knew one of the children was not yours."

Adrian felt like the air disappeared.

Sadie looked at Clara.

Clara looked at Elena.

And Elena finally broke.

"Stop."

Her voice shook.

"Tell them."

Marcus smiled.

"Tell them what happened the night they were born."

Adrian turned toward Elena.

"Please."

That single word changed something.

Because Adrian Blackwood rarely asked.

He demanded.

He commanded.

But now he was asking.

Elena closed her eyes.

"When you left the hospital..."

Adrian waited.

"The doctor came to me."

Her voice trembled.

"He told me there was a mistake."

Sadie's breathing became uneven.

"What mistake?"

Elena looked at her daughters.

Then Adrian.

"The twins were not registered correctly."

Marcus smiled.

"And?"

Elena whispered:

"One of them was switched."

The room went completely silent.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Adrian looked at Sadie.

Then Clara.

His daughters.

His family.

His entire life.

Everything was changing again.

Marcus stepped forward.

"Now you understand."

Adrian's eyes remained on Elena.

"Who?"

Elena's face filled with pain.

"Adrian..."

"Who is my daughter?"

Before Elena could answer, every light in the mansion suddenly went out.

The emergency system failed.

Again.

Marcus smiled in the darkness.

"Too late."

A sound came from upstairs.

A scream.

Everyone turned.

Sadie's face went white.

Because the scream came from her room.

Adrian moved instantly.

He ran toward the stairs.

And when he reached the hallway...

May you like

Her bedroom door was open.

Someone was standing inside.
