Chapter 5 - The Child Hidden From The World

"Who was the other child?"
Adrian's question remained between them.
Sadie didn't answer.
She couldn't.
Her eyes moved away from him, toward the floor, toward the walls, toward anywhere except the man standing in front of her.
Because she knew this moment would come.
She had spent years running from this question.
And now there was nowhere left to run.
"Sadie."
His voice was softer this time.
Not the voice of a mafia boss.
Not the voice of a man demanding answers.
The voice of someone who was afraid of what he would hear.
Sadie closed her eyes.
"My mother told me never to talk about it."
Adrian stared at her.
"About what?"
"The other child."
The room became silent.
Daniel Cross watched her carefully.
Like he already knew what she was about to say.
"Elena had two children."
Adrian's face changed.
Two.
The word felt impossible.
"Two?"
Sadie nodded slowly.
"My mother gave birth to twins."
Adrian stepped back.
For the first time in years, the man who had faced enemies, betrayal, and death looked completely lost.
"Then why didn't she tell me?"
Sadie's eyes filled with tears.
"Because she thought telling you would get both of us killed."
Adrian looked at Daniel.
"Who knew?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"Your father."
The anger returned.
Slowly.
Coldly.
The kind of anger that didn't need shouting.
"My father knew I had two children."
Daniel nodded.
"And he chose to hide one."
Adrian turned back to Sadie.
"Where is the other child?"
Sadie's lips trembled.
"I don't know."
That answer hurt more than anything else.
Because Sadie wasn't lying.
She truly didn't know.
Adrian walked toward the window.
Outside, the city lights blurred through the glass.
A few hours ago, his biggest problem had been a maid hiding an injured arm.
Now he was standing inside his own mansion discovering his entire life had been controlled by someone else's lies.
He had spent fifteen years believing Elena abandoned him.
Believing she chose another life.
Believing he had lost the only person who ever mattered.
But she had been fighting.
She had been protecting their children.
And he never knew.
"Tell me everything."
Sadie looked at him.
"I don't remember much."
"Try."
She took a shaky breath.
"My mother and I moved constantly."
"Why?"
"Because people were looking for us."
"Who?"
She looked at Daniel.
"People who worked for your father."
Adrian's hands tightened.
"How old were you?"
"Four."
The answer made him pause.
Four years old.
A child running from people who wanted her hidden.
"Where was your brother?"
Sadie's face changed.
She looked down.
"He stayed with my mother."
Adrian frowned.
"Why?"
Sadie swallowed.
"Because someone had to protect him."
"Why not you?"
Her silence answered him.
And Adrian understood.
Someone had chosen.
Someone had decided which child was worth keeping safe.
And which child had to disappear.
"Your mother left you behind?"
Sadie's eyes immediately filled with pain.
"No."
The answer came fast.
Almost defensive.
"She didn't leave me."
Adrian stopped.
"Then what happened?"
Sadie looked at him.
"My mother gave me to someone she trusted."
"Who?"
Sadie hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Your mother."
Adrian froze.
"My grandmother?"
Sadie nodded.
"She took me away from the people chasing us."
That was impossible.
His grandmother had died before Sadie entered his life.
But suddenly Adrian remembered something.
A small detail.
A locked account.
A private charity.
A monthly payment made under a false name.
Something he had ignored.
Because he thought it was another family matter.
"What was the name?"
Sadie looked confused.
"What?"
"The woman who raised you."
She whispered:
"Victoria Blackwood."
Adrian stopped breathing.
His grandmother.
The only person in his family who had ever shown him kindness.
The only person his father feared.
"She knew."
It wasn't a question.
Daniel nodded.
"She knew everything."
Adrian turned.
"Then why didn't she tell me?"
Daniel's expression became darker.
"Because she knew Marcus would kill you."
The answer was simple.
Terrifyingly simple.
Adrian had always thought his father wanted control.
But now he realized something worse.
His father wanted ownership.
Even over his son's life.
Sadie moved closer.
"Adrian..."
He looked at her.
She immediately looked uncomfortable.
Like she wasn't sure she was allowed to say his name.
"Your grandmother protected me."
Adrian studied her.
"How?"
"She hid me."
"Where?"
Sadie hesitated.
"In places nobody would search."
"Where?"
Her fingers moved to her injured arm.
A nervous habit.
Then she whispered:
"Among people nobody noticed."
The answer hurt.
Because he understood.
People like Sadie were invisible to powerful families.
Maid.
Servant.
Employee.
Nobody looked deeper.
Nobody wondered where they came from.
Nobody asked why they were hurting.
Adrian looked at her broken arm.
Suddenly, everything connected.
The reason she accepted pain.
The reason she never fought back.
The reason she believed being seen was dangerous.
She had spent her whole life surviving.
"Who broke your arm?"
The question came again.
This time, Sadie looked terrified.
"I can't tell you."
"Why?"
"Because it's connected."
"Connected to what?"
She looked at Daniel.
Daniel's face became serious.
"The second child."
Adrian immediately turned.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because suddenly the lights went out.
The mansion fell into darkness.
The security system failed.
Impossible.
Adrian's mansion had three backup systems.
Nobody could disable them.
Unless they had inside access.
A sound came from the hallway.
A door opening.
Adrian immediately moved in front of Sadie.
His hand reached inside his jacket.
Daniel looked toward the sound.
And his face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
"No..."
Adrian looked at him.
"Who is it?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Footsteps approached.
Slow.
Calm.
Like the person walking through the mansion knew nobody could stop them.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
A woman's voice.
A voice Sadie had not heard in years.
"Adrian Blackwood."
Sadie's entire body froze.
She whispered:
"That can't be..."
The figure stepped into the faint emergency light.
Adrian stared.
Because the woman standing there was impossible.
She looked exactly like Sadie.
Same eyes.
Same face.
Same scar near her eyebrow.
But older.
And alive.
The woman looked at Sadie.
Then smiled.
"Hello, sister."
Sadie couldn't move.
Adrian couldn't speak.
May you like
Because the missing child had finally returned.
And she was wearing the ring that belonged to Elena.
