Chapter 15 - The Family We Chose

Roman read the report twice.
Then a third time.
Nora looked at him.
“What does it say?”
Roman slowly smiled.
“They're both ours.”
Nora stared.
“What?”
“The test confirms it.”
She covered her mouth.
Roman pulled her into his arms.
For months, fear had followed them.
Now, for the first time, there was certainty.
The twins were healthy.
Both belonged to Nora and Roman.
Elena laughed through tears.
Celeste hugged her daughters.
Even Adrian stood quietly nearby, looking relieved.
The old Calder empire collapsed over the following months.
Roman dismantled the parts built on fear.
He turned the hotel into a legitimate family business.
The sealed floor became a memorial.
Nora restored her mother's small tailoring workshop and named it after Celeste.
Elena became part of Nora's life.
At first, they struggled.
There were too many lost years.
Too many questions.
Too much pain.
But sisters learned each other slowly.
Elena loved old movies.
Nora loved terrible coffee.
Elena hated thunderstorms.
Nora slept with the television on.
They laughed when they discovered how much they had in common.
Celeste remained with them.
She never tried to excuse what she had done.
She simply spent every day trying to make amends.
Adrian testified against his father.
Roman never completely trusted him.
But he gave him a chance.
That was enough.
Months later, Nora stood beneath white flowers outside the hotel.
Her wedding dress was simple.
Roman wore black.
Again.
But this time there were no secrets.
No hidden cameras.
No guns.
No enemies waiting behind locked doors.
Only family.
Nora walked toward him.
Roman smiled.
“You're late.”
She laughed.
“I had two babies kicking me.”
He looked at her stomach.
“You still blame them?”
“Absolutely.”
He kissed her forehead.
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
Behind them, Elena held the newborn twins.
Celeste cried.
Adrian pretended he wasn't emotional.
Everyone laughed.
Roman took Nora's hand.
The tiny gold thimble pendant hung around her neck again.
The chain had been repaired.
The scratch remained.
So did the letter R.
Nora touched it.
“My mother gave me this.”
Roman nodded.
“And it brought you to me.”
She smiled.
“No.”
She looked at their children.
“It brought me back to myself.”
Roman squeezed her hand.
For years, Nora had believed her life had been defined by what other people took from her.
Her mother.
Her marriage.
Her dignity.
Her identity.
But she had been wrong.
Her life was defined by what she chose to keep.
Her sister.
Her mother.
Her children.
And the man who had once walked into a silent hotel corridor and knelt beside her when everyone else had been too afraid to move.
Roman looked at the twins.
“Do you think they'll ever hear this story?”
Nora smiled.
“They'll hear all of it.”
“Even the embarrassing parts?”
“Especially those.”
Roman laughed.
The twins began crying at the same time.
Everyone turned.
Nora laughed.
“Your turn.”
Roman looked horrified.
“Both?”
“Both.”
He took one baby.
Elena handed him the other.
Roman stared down at them.
The feared Mafia boss who had once controlled an empire looked completely helpless.
Nora laughed until tears filled her eyes.
Roman looked at her.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
She walked over and kissed him.
Then she whispered:
“You finally got the family you were fighting for.”
Roman looked at their children.
“No.”
He kissed her hand.
“I got the family I was afraid to lose.”
The wind moved gently through the white flowers.
May you like
The repaired pendant rested against Nora's heart.
And for the first time, there was nothing left to hide.
