Chapter 1 - The Slap That Stopped the Hotel

A silver-haired woman dropped her tray when Selene March slapped Nora across the face.
“Don’t you dare touch me again!”
When Roman Calder entered the corridor, he found a broken gold chain beside a memorial covered in white roses.
On the back of the tiny thimble pendant was one scratched letter.
“R.”
Roman suddenly realized this wasn't about Julian.
The slap still rang through the service corridor.
Nora Bellamy remained on her knees, one hand pressed against the marble floor and the other wrapped tightly around her stomach.
Her cheek burned.
But the pain wasn't what frightened her.
It was the silence.
Twenty seconds earlier, the corridor had been filled with whispers, footsteps, the distant clatter of dishes from the hotel kitchen, and the soft hum of elevators.
Now there was nothing.
Even Selene March had stopped moving.
Her hand remained suspended beside Nora's face.
The woman who had slapped her looked almost as shocked as everyone else.
Almost.
Then Selene slowly lowered her arm.
Nora swallowed.
“Please,” she whispered.
Selene looked down at her with disgust.
“You should have thought of that before humiliating me.”
“I didn't humiliate you.”
“You came into this hotel carrying Julian's child.”
Nora's eyes hardened.
“It's not Julian's.”
A housekeeper covered her mouth.
Selene's expression changed.
For the first time, fear flickered behind her anger.
Then the elevator doors opened.
Roman Calder stepped out.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't need to.
Two men in dark suits followed him.
Roman's black overcoat was still wet from the rain outside. His dark hair was damp, and the scar cutting through his eyebrow looked sharper beneath the amber corridor lights.
Everyone moved aside.
Nora stared at him.
She hadn't seen him in almost eight months.
Not since the night he had stood outside a hospital room and told her they could no longer pretend their arrangement was safe.
Not since he had disappeared without explanation.
Not since Nora had convinced herself that the man she secretly loved had never truly loved her.
Roman's eyes found hers.
His gaze dropped to her cheek.
Then to the hand covering her stomach.
Then to the broken gold chain.
His face became completely still.
He walked toward her.
Nora tried to stand.
Her knees failed.
Roman reached her before she fell.
His hand caught her elbow.
“Easy.”
His voice was low.
Nora's breath trembled.
“Roman…”
He looked at her as though the single word had struck him harder than the slap.
“You're pregnant.”
Nora said nothing.
Selene stepped forward.
“Roman, this isn't what it looks like.”
He turned.
The temperature in the corridor seemed to drop.
“Who touched her?”
Nobody answered.
Roman's eyes settled on Selene.
She swallowed.
“I—”
“You.”
It wasn't a question.
Selene tried to smile.
“She attacked me first.”
Roman looked at Nora.
“Did she?”
Nora shook her head.
“No.”
Roman's jaw tightened.
Then he noticed the tiny pendant on the floor.
He bent down and picked it up.
His thumb brushed over the scratched letter on the back.
His expression changed.
Nora saw it.
“You know that?”
Roman stared at the pendant.
“Where did you get this?”
“My mother.”
“What was her name?”
“Celeste.”
Roman went completely silent.
His two men exchanged a glance.
Selene looked confused.
Nora reached for the pendant.
Roman didn't give it to her immediately.
Instead, he looked at the tiny engraving again.
R.
Then he looked at Nora.
“Your mother ever tell you why she kept this?”
Nora frowned.
“No.”
Roman finally placed it in her palm.
His fingers lingered over hers.
Then his gaze dropped to her stomach again.
“When were you going to tell me?”
Nora's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know if you'd want to know.”
Roman's expression tightened.
“Want to know?”
“You disappeared.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
Roman didn't answer.
Behind him, Selene shifted uneasily.
Roman looked over his shoulder.
“Get her out of my hotel.”
Selene's face went white.
“You can't do this.”
“I own this hotel.”
She froze.
Roman stepped closer.
“And if I find out you touched Nora again, you'll wish you hadn't.”
Selene backed away.
But before Roman could turn back, one of his men approached and whispered something into his ear.
Roman's face changed.
“What?”
The man whispered again.
Roman looked directly at Nora.
Then at the memorial.
Then at the pendant.
“That's impossible.”
Nora's stomach tightened.
“What is?”
Roman stared at the photograph of Celeste.
“She died six years ago.”
Nora nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Roman's voice dropped.
“No. She didn't.”
And then his phone rang.
May you like
The caller ID showed a name Nora had never seen before.
Celeste Bellamy.
