Chapter 9 - What Serena Hid in the Nursery

Preston did not go alone.
He had finally learned that lesson.
Emma contacted federal agents.
Claire, now cooperating, provided locations Dominic had used.
Oliver remained under protection.
At Serena’s grave, Preston found Nathan alive.
Dominic stood behind him.
“You ruined everything,” Dominic said.
“No. You did.”
Dominic laughed.
He had spent years resenting the Hales.
Serving them.
Cleaning their messes.
Watching Preston inherit power.
Victor promised him control.
Serena discovered the alliance.
That was why Dominic helped suppress the investigation after her death.
Preston felt the betrayal deeply.
Dominic had been family.
“Why Oliver?”
“Because Serena made him the key.”
“He was six.”
“Exactly.”
Dominic raised his weapon.
Then Claire stepped from behind a mausoleum.
“Victor never intended to give you anything.”
Dominic turned.
That moment was enough.
Nathan struck him.
Agents moved.
Dominic was arrested.
This time permanently.
Nathan survived.
The threat seemed over.
But the nursery ledger created another crisis.
Hundreds of families learned children had been illegally separated from biological parents.
The Hale Foundation became central to repairing the damage.
Preston committed his fortune.
Not as penance alone.
As responsibility.
Emma helped lead the effort.
Months passed.
Oliver began therapy again.
This time he participated.
He spoke.
Not constantly.
Not perfectly.
But freely.
Some days were difficult.
Nobody demanded miracles.
One evening Oliver asked Emma to sing Serena’s lullaby.
She did.
Preston listened from the doorway.
It no longer sounded like death.
It sounded like memory.
Later, Emma found him.
“You’re crying.”
“No.”
“You absolutely are.”
“Dangerous accusation.”
She touched his cheek.
“Ask me.”
He knew.
He knelt.
No ballroom.
No bargain.
No desperation.
“Emma Carter, will you marry me because I love you?”
She smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
Oliver appeared from behind the doorway.
“I knew it.”
Preston laughed.
For several weeks, happiness felt possible.
Then federal investigators called.
A DNA test had been performed on evidence recovered from the illegal adoption network.
One sample matched Oliver.
Preston’s stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?”
The investigator hesitated.
“It means Serena Hale had another biological child.”
Preston stared.
“That’s impossible.”
“The match is maternal.”
Emma took his hand.
“Where is the child?”
The investigator opened a file.
A girl.
Eight years old.
Born two years before Oliver.
Preston stared at the photograph.
The child had Serena’s eyes.
Then he saw the father listed on the birth record.
Nathan Hale.
Preston looked across the room at his brother.
May you like
Nathan had just walked in.
And from his face, Preston knew he already knew.
