Chapter 6 - The Promise Preston Couldn’t Break

Preston ran outside.

The woman disappeared.

Security searched the estate.

Nothing.

Preston began questioning his own eyes.

Then they found footprints.

A woman had been there.

Nathan saw the surveillance image.

“That isn’t Serena.”

Preston stared.

It looked exactly like her.

“Who?”

Nathan hesitated.

“Claire.”

Serena and Grace had another sister.

A younger half-sister nobody had mentioned.

Claire had worked with Victor.

The resemblance to Serena had been useful.

Especially when manipulating a traumatized child.

Oliver had seen Claire at the hospital.

Sometimes dressed like Serena.

Sometimes pretending to be her.

The discovery explained why Oliver had called Emma “Mommy.”

Not because he thought Emma was Serena.

Because the lullaby and similar features had triggered a tangled memory of women who resembled one another.

Emma became furious.

“They used his mother’s face against him.”

Preston’s response was colder.

“They won’t again.”

But Claire was dangerous.

And free.

Federal agents wanted Preston cooperating.

For once, he agreed.

Over the following weeks, the Hale empire changed.

Illegal operations were dismantled.

Legitimate businesses separated.

Preston turned over records that implicated corrupt associates.

Enemies called it weakness.

Preston stopped caring.

Emma stayed.

Not because he ordered her.

Because Oliver asked.

She moved from staff quarters into a guest suite.

The relationship between her and Preston became something neither named.

Breakfast together.

Late conversations.

Small smiles.

Once, Preston found Emma asleep beside Oliver while a children’s book rested on her chest.

He covered both with blankets.

Emma opened one eye.

“Scary mafia boss.”

“Go back to sleep.”

“You’re holding a dinosaur blanket.”

“Tell anyone and they disappear.”

She laughed.

He realized he loved the sound.

Then came Serena’s birthday.

Preston visited her grave.

Emma accompanied him.

He spoke aloud.

“I’m sorry.”

Emma stood away.

When Preston finished, she said, “For what?”

“Living.”

Emma looked at him.

“That isn’t betrayal.”

“It feels like it.”

“Maybe loving someone after Serena doesn’t erase loving Serena.”

He stared at her.

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Preston, I’m not competing with a dead woman.”

He stepped closer.

“I know.”

Their first kiss was gentle.

Almost cautious.

Then Oliver’s voice came from behind them.

“Emma?”

They separated.

Oliver stood with Nathan.

He smiled.

A real smile.

“Are you marrying Dad?”

Emma laughed.

Preston almost choked.

Nathan looked delighted.

But that evening, the question became less funny.

Preston found the original gala recording online.

His public promise had become viral.

Headlines mocked him.

Some romanticized it.

Others called Emma an opportunist.

Reporters surrounded the estate.

Emma hated it.

“I don’t want Oliver seeing people call me his replacement mother.”

Preston ordered the stories removed.

Emma stopped him.

“You can’t control everything.”

“I can control quite a lot.”

“That’s your problem.”

She was right.

Again.

Then a package arrived.

No return address.

Inside was a bridal veil.

And a note.

YOU PROMISED TO MARRY HER.

Preston called security.

Emma turned the note over.

More writing.

SERENA PROMISED SOMETHING TOO.

Inside the veil they found a flash drive.

A video showed Claire.

“If you’re watching, Victor failed.”

She smiled with Serena’s face.

“Ask Nathan what Serena promised me.”

Preston turned.

Nathan had gone pale.

“What did she promise?”

Nathan said nothing.

“Nathan.”

Finally, he whispered:

“Serena promised Claire that if she died, Claire would raise Oliver.”

Emma stared.

Preston’s expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because Serena thought you would be dead too.”

Then Oliver appeared in the doorway.

He had heard everything.

And in his hand was an envelope nobody had seen before.

“Mom gave me this.”

Preston stared at it.

Oliver held it out.

On the front, Serena had written:

FOR MY HUSBAND—WHEN HE FINALLY LEARNS WHO CLAIRE REALLY IS.
