Chapter 11 - Oliver Finally Told the Truth

The recorder had reached damaged tape.
Preston stared at it.
Michael said another copy existed.
Serena had hidden it.
But Preston no longer wanted to chase his dead wife’s secrets without considering his living son.
He went home.
Oliver sat at the kitchen table drawing.
Preston sat beside him.
“Can I ask you something about Mom?”
Oliver became quiet.
Preston did not push.
“You don’t have to answer.”
Oliver looked at him.
“Okay.”
Preston waited.
After several minutes, Oliver spoke.
“Mom said you weren’t bad.”
Preston swallowed.
“She said you did bad things because Grandpa taught you being scary kept people safe.”
The simplicity cut deeper than accusation.
“What else?”
“She said she was going to ask you to stop.”
Preston nodded.
“I wish she had.”
“She did.”
Preston frowned.
Oliver pointed toward himself.
“She said me.”
Preston understood.
Serena believed Oliver would become the reason Preston changed.
She had been right.
“What was the secret?”
Oliver’s eyes filled.
“She said she knew she was dying.”
Preston took his hand.
“And she told me not to be mad at you.”
“Why would you be mad?”
“Because you weren’t there.”
The sentence destroyed him.
Preston had been handling a crisis across the city when Serena died.
He had believed there was time.
Oliver had been alone beside her.
“I’m sorry.”
Oliver climbed into his lap.
“You came.”
“Too late.”
“But you came.”
Preston held him.
Then Oliver whispered:
“Mom said Emma would come someday.”
Preston froze.
“What?”
“She didn’t say Emma.”
“What did she say?”
“The girl who knows our song.”
Serena had known Grace might send Emma.
That was the confession.
Not betrayal.
Preparation.
Serena had told Oliver that if he ever felt completely alone, someone who knew the lullaby might find him.
That explained his first word.
“Mommy” had not meant he mistook Emma for Serena.
It had meant Emma was the person Serena promised would someday come.
Preston cried quietly.
Oliver wiped his cheek.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“You can marry Emma.”
Preston laughed through tears.
“Thank you for permission.”
Their wedding was scheduled for spring.
Small.
Family only.
Emma refused the ballroom.
Then Oliver changed her mind.
“Mom liked the ballroom.”
So they chose it.
The place where Oliver’s voice returned would become the place their family began again.
On the morning of the wedding, Preston visited Serena’s grave.
“Thank you,” he said.
Wind moved through the trees.
He left his old Hale signet ring on the stone.
He no longer wanted what it represented.
Back at the mansion, Emma prepared upstairs.
Oliver wore a small tuxedo.
“You nervous?” Preston asked.
“No.”
“I am.”
Oliver grinned.
Then Nathan entered.
His expression was wrong.
“What?”
“Michael Avery is dead.”
Preston stared.
“Natural causes?”
“No.”
A package had been found beside him.
Addressed to Preston.
Inside was the missing section of Serena’s tape.
And a note.
DO NOT MARRY EMMA UNTIL YOU HEAR THIS.
Preston looked toward the staircase.
Music had already begun.
Emma was about to come down.
Nathan held out the recorder.
Preston pressed play.

Serena’s voice whispered:
“If Emma Carter ever enters your life, Preston, you need to know who her father really is…”
