Chapter 13 - The Grave With No Body

Emma’s biological mother was Evelyn Carter.

Grace’s cousin.

Evelyn died shortly after Emma’s birth.

Grace adopted Emma privately and raised her as her own.

Serena had known.

The revelation hurt Emma, but it also clarified something.

Grace had chosen her.

Every move.

Every sacrifice.

Every night spent protecting her had been voluntary love.

Emma visited Grace’s grave.

“I thought finding out you weren’t my biological mother would make me feel like I lost you again.”

Preston stood several yards away.

Emma touched the stone.

“But it made me understand you chose me every day.”

That lesson changed Preston too.

Family was not possession.

Not blood alone.

Not a name.

It was choice repeated until choice became home.

Investigators eventually connected Evelyn’s death to Victor’s adoption network.

She had discovered babies being moved through falsified records.

Grace took Emma to protect her.

Serena later joined the investigation.

The entire chain had begun long before Preston met either sister.

Then came one final shock.

Serena’s grave had to be examined because investigators suspected documents had been buried with her.

Preston resisted.

Eventually he agreed.

When authorities opened the burial vault, Serena’s coffin contained her remains.

There was no conspiracy about her death itself beyond the medication tampering already documented.

For Preston, strangely, that certainty brought peace.

Serena was gone.

He could stop chasing ghosts.

Victor was convicted.

Dominic received a lengthy sentence.

Claire entered a rehabilitation and witness-protection program after providing evidence against the remaining network.

She wrote Emma letters.

Emma answered some.

Not all.

Forgiveness came slowly.

That was allowed.

Oliver began school again.

He made friends.

One afternoon Preston arrived early to collect him.

A teacher approached.

“Oliver talks about you constantly.”

Preston braced himself.

“What does he say?”

“That his dad used to be scary.”

Preston closed his eyes.

The teacher smiled.

“And now he makes pancakes.”

Oliver ran out.

“Dad!”

Preston still felt something every time he heard the word.

He hoped he always would.

At home Emma was planning the wedding again.

Oliver insisted on being best man.

Nathan objected because he wanted the title.

Oliver won.

Naturally.

Three days before the ceremony, Emma received a letter from Claire.

She opened it alone.

Claire apologized.

Not dramatically.

No excuses.

She admitted that Serena had tried to help her.

She admitted jealousy had made her cruel.

She admitted she had hated Emma for receiving the childhood she believed had been stolen from her.

At the bottom she wrote:

Serena left something with me before she died. I didn’t understand why she trusted me with it. Now I do.

A storage location followed.

Emma told Preston.

They went together.

Inside was one small box.

Serena’s wedding veil.

A handwritten music sheet.

And a videotape.

They played it.

Serena appeared healthy.

This had been recorded years earlier.

Grace sat beside her.

The sisters laughed.

Then Serena looked into the camera.

“If our children ever find this, we hope they found each other under better circumstances than we did.”

Grace smiled.

“And if Preston is watching, stop scowling.”

Preston actually laughed.

Emma cried.

Serena spoke about family.

About refusing to let inherited violence determine what children became.

About hoping Oliver would grow up knowing tenderness was strength.

Then Serena looked directly at the camera.

“And if Preston ever loves again, I hope he is brave enough not to punish himself for surviving.”

Preston lowered his head.

Emma held his hand.

The video ended.

But beneath the television was another envelope.

Preston had not noticed it.

His name was written across the front.

He opened it.

Inside was a legal document.

Serena had prepared it weeks before her death.

It transferred controlling authority over the Hale Foundation.

Not to Preston.

Not to Nathan.

To Oliver, when he became an adult.

Until then, the trustee was someone else.

Preston read the name.

Emma Carter.

Then footsteps sounded behind them.

Someone had entered the storage room.

May you like

And a voice Preston had not heard since his father’s funeral said:

“Serena made one mistake.”
