Chapter 9 - A New Beginning After The Betrayal

The upstairs door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

For eight years, I had imagined this moment.

I imagined finding my sister.

I imagined hearing her voice.

I imagined knowing the truth.

But I never imagined feeling afraid.

Because sometimes the truth you spend your entire life searching for is the truth that changes everything.

A small figure appeared at the top of the stairs.

A girl.

She looked around seven years old.

Long dark hair.

Careful eyes.

She held the wooden railing tightly.

Like she wasn't sure if she was allowed to come closer.

Emily covered her mouth.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

"Lily..."

The girl's eyes moved to Emily.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Then she slowly walked down the stairs.

Emily couldn't hold herself back.

She stepped forward.

But she stopped.

Like she was afraid of scaring her.

"Lily."

The girl looked at her.

"You came back."

Those three words broke something inside Emily.

She rushed forward and hugged her.

Lily hugged her back.

Not like two strangers meeting.

Like family finding each other again.

I stood there silently.

Watching the little girl who had changed my entire life.

My sister.

My father's daughter.

A person I never knew existed.

A person everyone had fought to hide.

Lily eventually looked at me.

And somehow...

I knew exactly who she was.

Not because of the photograph.

Not because of the documents.

Because she had my father's eyes.

The same eyes that looked at me in old family pictures.

The same eyes that carried things people never said.

"Are you Adrian?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

She looked at me carefully.

"You're my brother."

I swallowed.

"Yes."

A small smile appeared.

"I knew you would come."

The words hit harder than I expected.

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"Mom said you would."

My expression changed.

"Your mother?"

Lily looked upstairs.

"She's here."

The room went silent.

Emily immediately looked toward the second floor.

Marcus reached for his weapon.

I raised my hand.

"No."

Because somehow...

I already knew.

The person upstairs wasn't an enemy.

A woman slowly appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Victoria Blackwood.

My aunt.

The woman everyone thought was dead.

The woman who had disappeared with Lily.

She looked at me.

And for the first time in my life...

I saw regret in the eyes of a Blackwood.

"Adrian."

I stared at her.

"You lied to me."

She nodded.

"I did."

"You let me believe Lily was dead."

"I had no choice."

I almost laughed.

Everyone said that.

Everyone who betrayed me had a reason.

Everyone had an excuse.

"Everyone always has a choice."

Victoria looked at Lily.

"Sometimes the choice is between one person's anger and another person's life."

That stopped me.

Because I understood.

She wasn't asking me to forgive her.

She was explaining why she disappeared.

"Who was hunting her?"

Victoria's expression changed.

"The same person who has been hunting all of us."

"Richard?"

She shook her head.

"No."

The answer surprised me.

"Then who?"

Victoria looked toward the window.

"The person who controlled Richard."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Who?"

Victoria looked at him.

"You know."

Marcus froze.

I turned toward him.

"What does she mean?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Victoria sighed.

"Marcus protected Lily because your father asked him."

I looked at Marcus.

"But?"

Victoria's eyes became colder.

"But Marcus also protected the person responsible for everything."

The room went silent.

I stared at Marcus.

"No."

Marcus immediately shook his head.

"Adrian, listen."

But I stepped away.

Not because I believed Victoria.

Because I had been wrong too many times.

Everyone I trusted had a hidden side.

Everyone had secrets.

And I couldn't survive another mistake.

"Who?"

I looked at Marcus.

"Who did you protect?"

His face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

Then he said the words I never expected.

"My brother."

The room froze.

"Your brother?"

Marcus nodded.

"The man who created all of this."

I waited.

"His name is Thomas."

My blood ran cold.

Thomas Reed.

My father's lawyer.

The dead man.

The person whose name had appeared on the documents.

The person who had supposedly died years ago.

"He is alive?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Emily looked at Lily.

"Where is he?"

Nobody answered.

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

"He came here."

Everyone turned.

I looked at her.

"When?"

She lowered her head.

"Before you arrived."

My heart started beating faster.

"What did he want?"

Lily's hands tightened.

"He wanted me to leave."

"With him?"

She nodded.

"Why?"

The little girl looked at me.

Because children always had a way of saying the truth adults avoided.

"Because he said if I stayed..."

She paused.

"He would have to kill my brother."

The room became completely silent.

We left the house immediately.

Every assumption changed.

Thomas Reed wasn't just a hidden enemy.

He was the person who had built the entire system of lies around my family.

He had access to everything.

My father's accounts.

The family records.

The legal documents.

The inheritance.

And most importantly...

the truth.

Marcus finally told us everything.

Thomas Reed had been my father's closest advisor.

But unlike Richard, Thomas didn't want money.

He wanted control.

He believed the Blackwood family was weak.

He believed power should belong to someone willing to do whatever was necessary.

When my father discovered Thomas had manipulated company records and secretly controlled parts of the empire, he planned to expose him.

But Thomas moved first.

He created the illusion of his own death.

He disappeared.

And he continued controlling everything from the shadows.

"Why didn't my father tell me?"

I asked Marcus.

Marcus looked down.

"Because Thomas had one final weapon."

"What?"

"A recording."

Again.

The recording.

The one everyone feared.

"What was on it?"

Marcus looked at Victoria.

Victoria answered.

"Your father admitting he planned to destroy the Blackwood empire."

I frowned.

"That's impossible."

"It was edited."

I understood immediately.

Thomas created evidence.

He didn't need the truth.

He only needed people to believe his version.

"Where is the original?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Your father hid it."

"Where?"

She hesitated.

Then said:

"Inside the one place Thomas would never search."

We returned to the mansion before sunrise.

But something was wrong.

The security system was offline.

Again.

Marcus immediately noticed.

"Someone entered."

I looked around.

The house was exactly as we left it.

Too perfect.

Too quiet.

I walked toward my father's old office.

The place where he kept documents nobody else could access.

The door was slightly open.

I stopped.

Emily noticed.

"What is it?"

I didn't answer.

Because I knew.

Someone had been waiting for us.

I pushed the door open.

Inside, everything was untouched.

Except one thing.

A single envelope placed on the desk.

My name written on it.

Adrian.

I picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of Lily.

Not of my father.

A photograph of me.

Taken yesterday.

Outside my mansion.

Watching me.

On the back was a message.

"He was never hiding from you."

I turned the photograph over.

Another line was written underneath.

"He was protecting you from the truth."

My phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

"Come alone if you want to know who killed your father."

Then another message arrived.

A location.

I looked at Marcus.

At Emily.

At Lily.

Because whoever sent that message knew exactly where we were.

And they knew something else.

May you like

The person waiting for me wasn't Thomas.

It was someone I had already buried.
