Chapter 1 - The Cry Behind the Door

A young maid pressed a phone against her ear, whispering through tears:

"Please... someone has to believe me."

When mafia boss Adrian Blackwood entered the hallway, he found a broken silver keychain belonging to the maid he thought he could trust.

But carved into the back were four words:

"They know about her."

Adrian suddenly realized this wasn't a simple family matter.

I had spent twenty years learning one rule.

Trust was dangerous.

In my world, people smiled while holding knives behind their backs. They shook my hand while planning my downfall. They called me family when they needed something from me.

That was why I never allowed emotions to control my decisions.

My name was Adrian Blackwood.

To most people, I was a successful businessman who owned several international companies.

To the people who truly knew me, I was something else.

A man who had built an empire by surviving things that should have destroyed him.

I had enemies everywhere.

But I never expected the greatest threat to come from inside my own home.

The night everything changed started with a sound I almost ignored.

A cry.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just a broken whisper coming from behind a half-closed door.

I was walking through the east hallway of my mansion after midnight when I heard it.

At first, I thought one of the security alarms had malfunctioned.

Then I heard a woman's voice.

"Please... I don't know what else to do."

I stopped.

The hallway became completely silent.

My guards were several steps behind me.

They immediately noticed my expression change.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone who worked for me knew one thing.

When Adrian Blackwood became quiet, something was wrong.

I slowly walked toward the door.

It was the small private office near the servant quarters.

Nobody was supposed to be there.

Especially not one of my maids.

Then I heard her again.

"I can't keep lying for them."

My hand tightened.

Them.

That word stayed in my mind.

I opened the door slightly.

And I saw her.

Emily Carter.

She had worked in my mansion for almost two years.

She was never the loudest person in the room.

Never demanded attention.

Never complained.

She was the type of person who apologized even when someone else was wrong.

But that night, she looked completely different.

Terrified.

Her dark brown hair was tied messily behind her head.

Her uniform was slightly wrinkled.

Her hand covered her mouth as she tried to stop herself from crying.

The phone was pressed tightly against her ear.

"I swear I didn't tell him anything," she whispered.

My eyes narrowed.

Tell me what?

She continued.

"I know what you said, but I can't do this anymore."

A long pause.

Then her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"No... please don't bring my sister into this."

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

I stepped inside.

The door moved slightly.

Emily turned around.

The second she saw me, all the color disappeared from her face.

The phone almost slipped from her hand.

"Mr. Blackwood..."

Her voice shook.

She looked like she had just been caught committing a crime.

But something about her expression told me something different.

She wasn't afraid of me.

She was afraid of what would happen after I found out.

I walked closer.

"Who were you talking to?"

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was when I noticed something on the floor beside her.

A small silver keychain.

Broken.

I picked it up.

It was hers.

I had seen it before.

She always carried it.

A small gift from her younger sister.

But tonight, something was different.

There were scratches on the back.

Fresh scratches.

I turned it over.

Four words had been carved into the metal.

They were small.

Almost invisible.

But I saw them.

"They know about her."

I looked at Emily.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Because she knew I had read it.

"Who is her?" I asked.

She looked away.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"I shouldn't have stayed here."

That answer bothered me more than anything else.

Because Emily wasn't afraid of losing her job.

She wasn't afraid of being fired.

She was afraid of being found out.

I placed the keychain on the table.

"Start talking."

She shook her head.

"I can't."

"Why?"

Her hands trembled.

"Because if I tell you the truth..."

She stopped.

I waited.

She looked toward the hallway.

Toward the cameras.

Toward the people who worked inside my mansion.

Then she whispered:

"They will know I told you."

I turned around.

My eyes moved across the empty hallway.

Nobody was there.

But I knew something.

Someone was watching.

Someone had been watching her.

And maybe...

someone had been watching me.

I looked back at Emily.

"Who threatened you?"

A tear rolled down her face.

Before she could answer, every light in the hallway suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

My guards immediately reached for their weapons.

Then my phone vibrated.

One message appeared on the screen.

Unknown number.

Only six words.

"Ask her about the missing daughter."

I stared at the message.

Then I slowly looked at Emily.

May you like

Because the woman standing in front of me had just heard my phone receive the same secret that someone had spent years trying to bury...

And she was the only person who knew the truth.
