Chapter 10 - The Truth That Set Us Free

The location on the message led me to an abandoned private hospital outside the city.
A place that had been closed for years.
A place nobody should have been able to access.
But someone had turned the lights on.
Someone was waiting.
I stared at the building from inside the car.
Marcus sat beside me.
Emily was in the back seat with Lily.
Nobody spoke.
Because we all knew this was a trap.
The question was whether the truth was worth walking into it.
I looked at Lily through the rearview mirror.
She was holding the old necklace around her neck.
The same necklace from the photograph.
The same necklace my father had given her before she disappeared.
She looked scared.
But she wasn't crying.
She was stronger than most adults I knew.
"Stay with Emily," I said.
Lily looked at me.
"You'll come back?"
The question was simple.
But it carried the weight of everything I had lost.
I nodded.
"Yes."
She watched me carefully.
"Promise?"
I looked at my sister.
The sister I never knew I had.
The person my family had spent years protecting and hiding.
"I promise."
Emily placed a hand on Lily's shoulder.
"Don't worry."
I stepped out of the car.
Marcus followed.
"Adrian."
I stopped.
He looked at me.
"If something happens..."
I already knew what he meant.
"Don't."
Marcus nodded.
Because both of us understood.
This wasn't about revenge anymore.
It was about ending the lies.
The hospital was exactly what I expected.
Empty.
Cold.
Forgotten.
The walls were damaged.
The lights flickered.
The air smelled like old memories.
We entered through the front door.
Nobody stopped us.
That was suspicious.
A trap was never obvious.
It was designed to make you feel safe.
We walked through the hallway.
Then I saw the sign.
PRIVATE ARCHIVE.
My father's handwriting was carved into the old wooden door.
I stopped.
Marcus noticed.
"Your father used this place."
I looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"Because this is where he kept everything he couldn't trust anyone else with."
I opened the door.
Inside was a room filled with boxes.
Documents.
Old photographs.
Hard drives.
Everything my father had hidden.
Everything Thomas had spent years trying to erase.
On the center table was a small tape recorder.
And beside it...
a letter.
My name was written on the front.
Adrian.
I picked it up.
My hands were steady.
But inside, everything was breaking.
I opened it.
My father's handwriting appeared.
My son,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I stopped.
For years, I imagined what my father would say if he could speak to me again.
I expected an apology.
An explanation.
Something that would make all the years of silence easier.
But instead, the first words were not about him.
They were about Lily.
You have a sister.
She is innocent.
She was never a threat to you.
She was never your enemy.
She was your family.
I closed my eyes.
My father continued.
I hid her because I knew someone would use her existence to destroy both of you.
I trusted the wrong people.
I trusted Thomas Reed.
The room became silent.
Even after everything...
Seeing the name in my father's own words felt different.
Thomas wasn't a rumor.
He wasn't a theory.
He was real.
My father knew.
I continued reading.
Thomas believed power belonged to whoever was willing to take it.
He didn't want my company.
He wanted my legacy.
He wanted my children to destroy each other.
Because a divided family is easier to control.
My hand tightened around the letter.
That was his plan.
Not just stealing the empire.
Destroying the family.
A sound came from behind us.
A slow clap.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
I turned.
A man stood in the doorway.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
Calm expression.
Thomas Reed.
Alive.
After all these years.
"Beautiful speech from a dead man."
Marcus immediately raised his weapon.
Thomas smiled.
"Still loyal, Marcus?"
Marcus's face hardened.
"You ruined everything."
Thomas looked amused.
"No."
He looked at me.
"Your father ruined everything."
I stepped forward.
"You killed him."
Thomas tilted his head.
"Careful."
A smile.
"Accusations without proof are dangerous."
I held up the letter.
"This isn't enough?"
He laughed.
"Your father was always dramatic."
Then he walked closer.
"You really think he was a hero?"
I said nothing.
Thomas continued.
"He lied to you."
"To protect us."
"No."
Thomas shook his head.
"He lied because he was weak."
The anger inside me rose.
But I controlled it.
Because emotional people made mistakes.
And Thomas was waiting for one.
"What happened to my father?"
Thomas looked at the tape recorder.
"Do you want the truth?"
I didn't answer.
He smiled.
"Of course you do."
He walked toward the table.
"That's the problem with people like you, Adrian."
He touched the recorder.
"You think the truth fixes everything."
He pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
My father's voice.
"I know what you're planning, Thomas."
My entire body froze.
The recording continued.
"You won't touch my children."
A second voice answered.
Thomas.
"You don't understand. Your son will inherit everything. Your daughter will become a problem."
My father's voice became colder.
"She is not a problem."
A pause.
"She is my daughter."
The recording stopped.
Thomas looked at me.
"Now you know."
I stared at him.
"You killed him."
Thomas didn't deny it.
Not directly.
Instead, he said:
"Your father chose his family over his empire."
A cold smile.
"That was his mistake."
Marcus stepped forward.
"You planned all of this."
Thomas looked at him.
"You helped me."
The room froze.
I looked at Marcus.
"What?"
Marcus's face changed.
"No."
Thomas laughed.
"You never told him?"
Marcus looked at me.
"Adrian, listen—"
"You knew?"
Marcus's silence answered.
Again.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
Thomas smiled.
"The truth is complicated."
I looked at Marcus.
"How long?"
Marcus closed his eyes.
"At first..."
His voice broke.
"I worked for Thomas."
Everything stopped.
Emily's voice came through my earpiece.
"Adrian..."
I had forgotten she was listening from the car.
I didn't answer.
Marcus continued.
"I was young. Your father trusted me. Thomas offered me power."
"And you accepted."
He nodded.
"But then I learned what he was planning."
My voice became colder.
"So you switched sides."
"Yes."
"After helping him."
Marcus looked down.
"Yes."
Thomas smiled.
"And that is why I kept him alive."
The lights suddenly went out.
The room became completely dark.
A gunshot echoed.
Then another.
Someone grabbed my shoulder.
I moved instinctively.
The emergency lights turned on.
Thomas was gone.
Marcus was on the floor.
Blood covered his shirt.
I ran toward him.
"Marcus."
He opened his eyes.
Barely.
"Adrian..."
"Who shot you?"
He grabbed my arm.
His voice was almost gone.
"Your father..."
I leaned closer.
"What about him?"
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
"The person who gave the order..."
A pause.
"The person who wanted your father dead..."
I waited.
Marcus whispered the name.
And my entire world collapsed.
Because the person behind everything...
May you like
was the last person I ever expected.
My mother.
