Chapter 8 - The Last Secret Revealed

The photograph felt heavier than it should have.

It was just paper.

A small piece of evidence left behind after a gunshot shattered my home.

But when I looked at the image again, my hands tightened.

Lily.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been beside me for years.

Emily stared at the photograph.

Her face had gone pale.

"Who is that?" she whispered.

I didn't answer.

Because I already knew.

The person standing beside Lily wasn't a stranger.

It was Marcus.

My security chief.

My father's closest protector.

The man who claimed he had spent years protecting Lily.

The man who had looked me in the eyes and told me he wanted me alive.

But the photograph showed something different.

Marcus wasn't just protecting her.

He was with her.

"Adrian."

Emily's voice pulled me back.

"What are you thinking?"

I looked at Marcus.

He was standing near the broken window, checking the outside perimeter.

Calm.

Focused.

Like he wasn't the center of the biggest question in my life.

"How long have you known?"

Marcus turned around.

His eyes immediately went to the photograph in my hand.

And for the first time...

he didn't deny anything.

The silence was his answer.

"Marcus."

He slowly walked toward me.

"Adrian..."

"No."

My voice stopped him.

"Don't explain yet."

The room became quiet.

My guards stood around us, confused.

They had spent years believing Marcus was untouchable.

The same way I had.

I held up the photograph.

"Tell me when this was taken."

Marcus looked at it.

"Seven years ago."

"Seven years."

I repeated the words.

"Lily disappeared eight years ago."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why were you with her seven years ago?"

He looked away.

That was the moment I knew.

The truth was always easier to see when someone stopped fighting to hide it.

"Because she contacted me."

Emily looked surprised.

"Lily contacted you?"

Marcus nodded.

"After she realized someone was still searching for her."

I stepped closer.

"Who?"

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"The same person who just tried to kill us."

Richard.

Or whoever was controlling him.

I looked at the broken window.

The bullet had missed me by seconds.

Someone wanted me scared.

Someone wanted me to stop digging.

They had failed.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Marcus looked at me.

"Because Lily asked me not to."

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn't believe it.

"So now my sister's wishes matter more than mine?"

Marcus accepted the anger.

"You have every right to hate me."

"Good."

I stepped closer.

"Because I do."

The words hurt.

Not because I wanted to hurt him.

Because they were true.

Marcus had been like family.

And family was the one thing I had always believed couldn't betray me.

I was wrong.

Again.

We moved to the underground security room.

The only place in the mansion disconnected from outside communication.

No cameras.

No unknown signals.

No hidden devices.

Just the people who still had a reason to tell the truth.

Me.

Emily.

Marcus.

I placed the photograph on the table.

"Start talking."

Marcus sat down.

For a moment, he looked older.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Like carrying the secret had finally become too heavy.

"Your father discovered Richard's plan before Lily was born."

I listened.

"Richard wanted control of the company. But your father had already decided you would inherit everything."

"Because I was his son."

Marcus nodded.

"But Richard discovered something."

"Lily."

"Yes."

I looked at the photograph.

"And he wanted her gone."

Marcus nodded.

"But your father made a mistake."

"What mistake?"

"He trusted people."

The answer surprised me.

Marcus continued.

"Your father thought he could protect Lily by moving her away. He thought if enough people believed she disappeared, Richard would stop searching."

"But he didn't."

"No."

Marcus looked down.

"Because Richard had help."

"Who?"

Marcus hesitated.

Then said:

"Someone inside your father's inner circle."

The same words again.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

I hated how often I heard them.

"Who?"

Marcus looked at Emily.

She understood immediately.

Her expression changed.

"Wait."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She slowly reached into her pocket.

"I found something else with the documents."

She removed a small folded paper.

I opened it.

It wasn't a letter.

It was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

Because one name appeared repeatedly.

Not Richard.

Not Victoria.

Not Marcus.

Someone else.

Someone I had never suspected.

Someone who had been working for my family for twenty years.

I looked up.

"Impossible."

Emily looked at the paper.

"What?"

I handed it to her.

Her face changed.

"Who is this?"

I didn't answer.

Because saying the name made it real.

The person who had managed my father's private accounts.

The person who knew every secret.

The person who had access to every room.

The person who could erase every record.

My father's personal lawyer.

Thomas Reed.

Dead for five years.

But the documents showed payments made after his death.

Impossible.

Unless...

he wasn't dead.

We spent the next hour searching every record connected to Thomas Reed.

The deeper we went, the worse it became.

Thomas wasn't just involved.

He was the person who created the system that hid Lily.

The fake records.

The false documents.

The missing files.

Everything led back to him.

But there was one problem.

Thomas Reed was officially dead.

Buried.

Confirmed.

I looked at Marcus.

"You knew?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

For once, I believed him.

Because Marcus looked genuinely shocked.

Emily stared at the documents.

"There is one more thing."

"What?"

She pointed at the final page.

A location.

No address.

Just coordinates.

I entered them into the computer.

The map appeared.

A remote area outside the city.

My heart started beating faster.

"That's where Lily is."

Nobody spoke.

Because we all knew.

After eight years...

we were finally close.

I grabbed my jacket.

"We're going."

Marcus stood.

"Adrian, we need to prepare."

"No."

I looked at him.

"We waited long enough."

Emily stepped forward.

"I'll come."

I shook my head.

"No."

Her expression changed.

"Why?"

"Because this started because you tried to protect Lily."

I looked at her.

"You've already risked enough."

She stared at me.

Then quietly said:

"So have you."

I didn't respond.

Because she was right.

For the first time in years, I wasn't chasing power.

I wasn't protecting an empire.

I was searching for family.

Two hours later, we arrived at the location.

A small abandoned house stood in the middle of nowhere.

No guards.

No cameras.

No signs anyone had been there.

That worried me more.

People who wanted to hide something usually left signs.

People who wanted you to find something made it too easy.

Marcus checked the area.

"Something isn't right."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"Too quiet."

Emily stepped closer.

"The door."

I looked.

The front door was slightly open.

A light inside flickered.

Someone was there.

I reached for my weapon.

Slowly.

Carefully.

We entered.

The house was empty.

Almost.

A child's drawing sat on the table.

A picture of a family.

Four people.

A man.

A woman.

A little girl.

And another person.

Me.

My breath stopped.

Lily had drawn me.

Before she ever met me.

Then I saw the envelope beside it.

My name was written on the front.

Adrian.

I opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

"She has been waiting for you."

A sound came from upstairs.

A small voice.

"Adrian?"

I froze.

Emily covered her mouth.

Marcus stopped moving.

Because after eight years...

we finally heard her.

"Lily?"

My voice shook.

The footsteps above us slowly moved closer.

One step.

May you like

Then another.

The upstairs door began to open.
