Chapter 5 - The Locked Pink Room

Adrian drew his weapon.
Marcus moved beside him.
Sofia pulled Emma backward.
The panel opened.
A terrified young security guard emerged.
Adrian recognized him.
“Anthony?”
The guard raised both hands.
“Don't shoot.”
“How did you get in there?”
“Mr. Bennett.”
Adrian's expression hardened.
Anthony explained that Charles had ordered him into the passage hours earlier to retrieve a box hidden behind Claire's closet.
“Where is it?”
“I couldn't find it.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Bennett has my brother.”
Silence.
Charles had been preparing for this.
Marcus searched the passage.
It led through the walls to an old servants' staircase.
That explained how Charles had entered Claire's room without appearing on cameras.
Adrian searched the compartment himself.
His fingers found a loose brick.
Behind it sat a small metal box.
The brass key opened it.
Inside were photographs, account ledgers, and a letter.
Adrian recognized Elena's handwriting.
Adrian,
If you're reading this, I failed to tell you in time.
He sat on Claire's bed.
Elena had discovered that Charles was laundering money through Moretti businesses and secretly selling information to rival organizations.
But there was more.
Charles had arranged violent conflicts between families, then profited from both sides.
Elena had gathered evidence.
She planned to tell Adrian.
She never got the chance.
The final page contained one name.
Victor Hale.
Marcus's father.
Adrian slowly looked up.
Marcus had gone pale.
“My father?”
According to Elena, Victor Hale had discovered Charles's betrayal years earlier.
He died before exposing it.
Official cause: heart attack.
Marcus stared at the letter.
“He was murdered.”
Adrian said nothing.
Two dead fathers.
One murdered wife.
One murdered child.
Charles had spent years standing beside their graves.
Marcus turned away.
His hands shook.
Sofia quietly touched his arm.
It was a small gesture.
But Marcus steadied.
Adrian looked at Emma.
The toddler had climbed onto Claire's rug.
She was studying a photograph of Claire.
“They would've been friends,” Sofia whispered.
Adrian could not answer.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Charles.
“You found Elena's box.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“Where are you?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“You always were impatient.”
“You murdered my family.”
“No.”
Adrian froze.
Charles continued.
“I ordered Elena's death. Claire wasn't supposed to be in the car.”
Adrian's vision blurred.
Charles spoke calmly.
“That was unfortunate.”
Marcus grabbed Adrian's shoulder before he could crush the phone.
“Where are you?”
Charles laughed.
“Ask Sofia.”
Adrian looked at her.
She shook her head.
“I don't know.”
“Oh, she does,” Charles said. “Her husband knew.”
Then the line disconnected.
Sofia suddenly remembered something.
Daniel's old garage.
A warehouse by the Chicago River.
Before his death, Daniel had told her never to go there.
They drove immediately.
The garage had been abandoned for years.
Inside, beneath an old hydraulic lift, they discovered another compartment.
Daniel had hidden copies of everything.
Photographs.
Bank records.
Audio recordings.
And one ledger showing payments from Charles to a man named Caldwell.
Sofia's landlord.
Adrian finally understood.
Caldwell had not merely pressured Sofia.
He had been reporting on her.
Every late payment.
Every visitor.
Every job.
Charles had been watching Daniel's widow for three years.
Marcus opened a final folder.
Inside was a photograph taken days before the bombing.
Elena Moretti and Daniel Romano stood together.
Sofia gasped.
“They knew each other?”
Adrian turned the photograph over.
Elena had written a message.
Daniel—
If anything happens to me, protect Claire.
Adrian's heart stopped.
Sofia stared.
“Daniel never told me.”
“He was protecting you.”
A second line appeared beneath Elena's message.
Daniel's handwriting.
If anything happens to me, protect Emma.
Two parents had made the same promise.
Neither had survived long enough to keep it.
Adrian looked at Sofia.
“We will.”
She met his eyes.
For once, she did not argue.
Then Marcus noticed another photograph.
He lifted it.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Marcus handed it to Adrian.
The photograph showed Charles meeting another man.
Adrian recognized him instantly.
A man Adrian had trusted with every financial account, every property, every secret.
His family attorney.
Samuel Price.
And beneath the photograph Daniel had written three words:
CHARLES HAS A PARTNER.
Adrian's phone rang.
Samuel Price.
Adrian answered.
Samuel spoke before Adrian could.
May you like
“Don't trust Marcus.”
Then a gunshot exploded through the warehouse window.
