Chapter 4 - The Debt Sofia Never Mentioned

Adrian reached the lake house in eighteen minutes.
The front door stood open.
Sofia was inside.
Emma was in her arms.
Charles was gone.
On the table sat another black envelope.
“He brought her back?” Adrian asked.
Sofia nodded.
“He said he found her near the road.”
“He lied.”
“I know.”
Emma clung to her mother.
Adrian crouched.
“Did Mr. Bennett take you?”
Emma buried her face against Sofia.
Sofia stroked her hair.
“Baby, tell Mr. Moretti.”
Emma whispered, “He said Daddy wanted me to go with him.”
Adrian's anger became something cold.
“What else?”
“He asked about Daisy.”
Marcus swore softly.
The doll.
The key.
Charles knew Daniel had hidden something.
Adrian opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of Sofia's lease.
Across it someone had written:
SHE OWES MORE THAN RENT.
Adrian looked at Sofia.
“What does that mean?”
She shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Marcus examined the document.
“Caldwell Properties.”
“So?”
Marcus turned the page.
The ownership company was hidden behind several corporations.
He recognized the final name.
“Adrian.”
“What?”
“Caldwell's building belongs to us.”
Sofia stared.
“What?”
Adrian took the paper.
Marcus was right.
One of the Moretti holding companies had purchased the building two years earlier.
Adrian had never known.
His organization controlled hundreds of properties.
“Who manages it?” Adrian asked.
Marcus checked.
His face changed.
“Charles.”
Sofia stepped backward.
“My rent.”
Adrian understood.
Charles had been deliberately keeping her desperate.
Why?
To keep Sofia working at the estate?
Close to Claire's room?
Close to Adrian?
Or close enough to monitor?
Sofia looked sick.
“He knew who I was before I applied for the job.”
“Yes.”
“He put me in your house.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Adrian looked toward Emma.
“Because Daniel hid evidence.”
Sofia covered her mouth.
The truth came apart slowly.
Daniel had suspected he would be killed.
He had hidden the storage key inside Daisy.
Charles believed Sofia might eventually lead him to it.
So he kept her poor.
Kept her frightened.
Kept her where he could watch her.
Adrian felt murderous.
Sofia saw it.
“No.”
“What?”
“Whatever you're thinking.”
“He threatened your daughter.”
“And killing him won't bring Daniel back.”
“This isn't about Daniel.”
“Then who?”
“Emma.”
Sofia stared at him.
Adrian looked away.
“And Claire.”
That silenced them.
Later that night, Emma found Adrian sitting alone on the porch.
She climbed onto the chair beside him.
“You're sad.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“You argue a lot.”
“Mommy says I get that from Daddy.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Your father sounds brave.”
“He fixed cars.”
“That can be brave.”
Emma considered it.
“Was Claire brave?”
Adrian's chest tightened.
“How do you know Claire?”
“Mommy told me.”
He looked toward the house.
Sofia stood behind the glass door.
She had heard.
Adrian turned back to Emma.
“Yes. Claire was very brave.”
“Did she like dolls?”
“Yes.”
“Flowers?”
“Sunflowers.”
Emma smiled.
“Me too.”
Adrian swallowed.
Emma put Daisy on his knee.
“You can hold her.”
“Why?”
“When I'm sad, I hold Daisy.”
He stared at the battered doll.
Then carefully held it.
Emma leaned against his arm.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Sofia watched from inside.
Something in her expression changed.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But perhaps understanding.
Marcus arrived after midnight.
He carried a laptop.
“We recovered part of Daniel's recording.”
Adrian entered the kitchen.
Marcus played it.
Daniel's voice crackled.
“The man's name is Charles Bennett.”
Sofia shut her eyes.
The recording continued.
“But Bennett isn't the one giving the orders.”
Adrian leaned forward.
Static swallowed several seconds.
Then Daniel's voice returned.
“If Moretti ever hears this, tell him the bomb wasn't meant to kill him.”
Adrian froze.
Marcus replayed it.
Same words.
The bomb wasn't meant for Adrian.
Sofia whispered, “Then who?”
Daniel's recording crackled.
“The target was his wife.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Elena.
Not him.
Elena had been deliberately murdered.
The recording continued.
“She found out something about the Moretti organization. Bennett said she had documents. He said if those documents ever surfaced—”
Static.
Then nothing.
Adrian stood absolutely still.
For three years, he had believed Elena and Claire died because of him.
Now he learned Elena had been targeted.
“Documents,” Marcus said.
“Where?”
Nobody knew.
Then Sofia looked toward Emma.
“Claire's room.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“The envelope.”
“What about it?”
“Someone wanted you looking there.”
Adrian understood.
The locked bedroom might contain something.
They returned to the estate before sunrise.
Adrian entered Claire's room.
He searched carefully.
Books.
Drawers.
Closet.
Nothing.
Then Emma walked to the yellow rain boots.
She picked one up.
Something rattled inside.
Adrian reached into it.
A small brass key.
Not Daniel's key.
Another one.
Attached was a tag.
ELENA.
Adrian stared at it.
Behind the closet wall came a soft click.

A hidden panel had just unlocked.
And someone was breathing on the other side.
