Chapter 10 - The Warehouse by the River

Adrian looked up.
Samuel Price.
The attorney saw recognition.
He ran.
Marcus chased him across the lawn.
Adrian followed.
Samuel reached a vehicle, but police blocked the gates.
He surrendered.
The truth finally surfaced.
“Charles Bennett” had never been one man.
It was an operational identity shared between brothers Samuel and Richard Bennett.
Samuel became the Moretti attorney.
Richard became Caldwell.
Together they infiltrated Adrian's finances and properties.
But Lorenzo controlled both.
The real conspiracy had existed for nearly a decade.
Lorenzo had planned to inherit Adrian's empire after destroying his family and isolating him.
He almost succeeded.
“What does he want now?” Adrian asked.
Samuel laughed bitterly.
“You.”
“Why?”
“He doesn't want the empire anymore.”
“Then what?”
“He wants you to suffer.”
Adrian looked toward the burned estate.
Samuel continued.
“He knows money doesn't matter to you now.”
Adrian's eyes moved toward Sofia and Emma.
Samuel smiled.
“Exactly.”
That night, Adrian moved them to a secure federal location.
Sofia resisted.
“I am tired of running.”
“So am I.”
“Then stop treating me like luggage.”
Adrian looked at her.
She stepped closer.
“You make decisions for everyone because you're terrified that if you don't control everything, someone dies.”
He had no defense.
“You couldn't save Elena,” Sofia said softly. “You couldn't save Claire. I couldn't save Daniel.”
Adrian's jaw tightened.
“But we're still here.”
She touched his hand.
“So stop living like we're already ghosts.”
Adrian looked down at their hands.
Then slowly intertwined his fingers with hers.
Emma appeared in the doorway.
“Are you holding hands?”
They separated.
“No,” Adrian said.
Emma frowned.
“You were.”
Sofia laughed.
Even Adrian smiled.
The tenderness lasted less than a minute.
Marcus entered.
“We found Lorenzo.”
“Where?”
“River docks.”
The same docks whose phone call had kept Adrian home the morning Elena died.
The circle was closing.
Adrian went with federal agents.
Lorenzo stood alone inside Warehouse Seven.
He did not run.
“You finally came,” he said.
Adrian approached.
“It's over.”
Lorenzo smiled.
“You still think this was about business.”
“You murdered Elena.”
“Yes.”
“Claire.”
“An accident.”
Adrian's fists tightened.
“And Daniel?”
“Necessary.”
“Victor Hale?”
“Necessary.”
Every word made Marcus's face harder.
Lorenzo looked between them.
“You two inherited empires because men like me made difficult choices.”
“No,” Adrian said.
“We inherited graves.”
Lorenzo's smile disappeared.
Agents moved in.
Then Lorenzo revealed a dead man's switch.
“If I release this button, explosives detonate.”
“Where?”
Lorenzo smiled again.
“Ask Sofia.”
Adrian's phone rang.
Sofia.
He answered.
“Adrian.”
Her voice trembled.
“There is something under the floor.”
“What?”
“Emma found it.”
Adrian shouted, “Get out!”
Then he heard Emma.
“Mommy, it's counting.”
Adrian stared at Lorenzo.
The old man lifted one finger from the switch.
“Choose carefully.”
Marcus raised his weapon.
Lorenzo laughed.
May you like
Then the warehouse doors slammed shut.
And the countdown on Sofia's end reached ten.
