Chapter 11 - Elena’s Last Secret

“Nine.”
Sofia grabbed Emma.
“Run!”
“Eight.”
Adrian screamed into the phone.
“Leave everything!”
“Seven.”
Sofia reached the door.
Locked.
“Six.”
She kicked it.
Nothing.
“Five.”
Emma pointed toward a window.
“Mommy!”
Sofia lifted a chair.
“Four.”
She smashed the glass.
“Three.”
She pushed Emma through.
“Two.”
Emma screamed.
“Mommy!”
“One.”
Adrian heard an explosion.
Then silence.
“Sofia!”
Nothing.
Lorenzo smiled.
Adrian crossed the warehouse before anyone stopped him.
He struck Lorenzo.
Again.
Again.
Marcus pulled him away.
“Adrian!”
Adrian could not hear him.
Then his phone crackled.
“Adrian?”
Sofia.
He froze.
“Sofia?”
“We're okay.”
His knees almost failed.
The explosive device had detonated beneath an empty utility room.
Emma had found the timer early enough.
Federal agents arrested Lorenzo.
This time there was no escape.
The conspiracy collapsed rapidly.
Accounts were seized.
Officials were charged.
Samuel and Richard Bennett agreed to testify.
But one mystery remained.
Elena's final letter.
Rebecca delivered it personally.
“She asked me to keep this unless you chose to walk away from the life that killed her.”
Adrian stared.
“And now?”
Rebecca looked toward Sofia and Emma.
“You already have.”
He opened it alone.
Elena's words destroyed the last walls inside him.
She did not blame him.
She had known about the phone call.
She had known Adrian carried guilt for every dangerous choice he made.
And she had planned to ask him to leave the organization.
Her final paragraph was simple.
If anything happens to me, don't turn our daughter into a shrine. Don't turn yourself into a grave. Claire needs a father who lives, Adrian. And if she isn't here, then live enough for both of you.
Adrian cried.
Not quietly.
Not privately behind stone walls.
He sat on the floor and cried until there was nothing left to hold back.
Sofia found him.
She did not speak.
She simply sat beside him.
Eventually Adrian gave her the letter.
She read it.
“She knew you.”
“Yes.”
“She loved you.”
“Yes.”
“And she wanted you to live.”
Adrian looked at Sofia.
“I don't know how.”
Emma appeared carrying Daisy.
She climbed into his lap.
“You eat breakfast.”
Adrian blinked.
“What?”
“And water flowers.”
Sofia smiled through tears.
Emma continued.
“And sometimes ice cream.”
Adrian laughed weakly.
“That simple?”
Emma nodded.
“And you don't let Daisy sleep alone.”
Adrian hugged her.
Maybe living began exactly like that.
Small things.
Breakfast.
Flowers.
Not sleeping alone.
Weeks passed.
Adrian dismantled the criminal side of the Moretti organization and cooperated with investigators.
Legitimate businesses remained.
He sold the estate ruins.
Except for the garden.
He could not sell that.
One afternoon Marcus brought news.
“Lorenzo wants to talk.”
“About what?”
“He claims Elena hid one more thing.”
Adrian almost refused.
But Lorenzo had mentioned a safe-deposit box.
The key was supposedly hidden somewhere Claire would know.
Adrian returned to the damaged estate.
Claire's room was gone.
But firefighters had recovered the yellow rain boots.
One survived.
Inside its lining, Adrian found a tiny folded paper.
A bank number.
He went to the vault.
Inside was not money.
It was a video.
Elena and Claire appeared on screen.
Claire waved.
“Hi, Daddy!”
Adrian covered his mouth.
Elena smiled.
“We made you something.”
Claire held up a drawing.
Three people beneath giant sunflowers.
Then she whispered loudly, “Mommy, tell him the secret.”
Elena laughed.
“All right.”
She looked directly into the camera.
“Adrian, there's something I've been trying to tell you.”
The recording suddenly froze.
Then another file appeared beneath it.
Recorded two days before Elena died.
Adrian clicked it.
Elena's expression was serious.
“I found out who betrayed us.”
May you like
Adrian leaned closer.
“And Adrian… it wasn't Lorenzo.”
