Chapter 11 - The Last Lie of the Moretti Family

The gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then Luca ran.
Not toward the attacker.
Not toward the door.
Toward Sofia.
His mother was gone.
The place where she had been standing was empty.
Only a broken piece of her coat remained on the floor.
"MOM!"
The word escaped before he could stop it.
A word he hadn't said in decades.
A word he never thought he would say again.
Matteo reached him.
"Luca."
"No."
Luca looked around.
"Find her."
His voice was shaking.
Not from fear.
From anger.
Everyone in the room understood.
The man who had survived every enemy.
The man who never showed weakness.
Was breaking.
Because this wasn't about business.
This wasn't about power.
This was his mother.
The woman he had spent his entire life believing abandoned him.
Mia picked up the piece of fabric from the floor.
"There's blood."
Everyone turned.
She looked at Adrian.
The security chief was still on the ground.
Bleeding.
But alive.
Luca walked toward him.
Slowly.
Every step carried years of anger.
Adrian looked up.
His face was pale.
"You need to listen."
Luca grabbed his collar.
"Who shot her?"
Adrian coughed.
"I don't know."
Wrong answer.
Luca tightened his grip.
"You were there."
"I was trying to stop them."
"Who?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
For a moment, Luca thought he wouldn't answer.
Then he whispered:
"Your father."
Silence.
Even after everything.
Even after all the secrets.
Hearing it again still hurt.
"My father died."
Adrian looked at him.
"That doesn't mean he stopped."
Luca released him.
"What are you saying?"
Adrian struggled to breathe.
"Your father built a system."
"What system?"
"A way to control everything after his death."
Luca stared.
"Impossible."
Adrian shook his head.
"He knew people would turn against each other."
He looked at Matteo.
"He knew Matteo would try to expose him."
Then at Mia.
"He knew Isabella would protect Emma."
Finally, at Luca.
"And he knew you would spend your entire life searching for the truth."
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"You knew all of this."
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
The question was simple.
But Adrian's answer wasn't.
"Because I was the person your father trusted most."
The room went silent.
Matteo looked at him.
"You worked for him."
Adrian looked away.
"I worked for the Moretti family."
"No."
Luca's voice became cold.
"You worked for him."
Adrian didn't deny it.
Then Luca noticed something.
The message on the wall.
THE REAL TRAITOR WAS NEVER WHO YOU THOUGHT.
His eyes moved from Adrian.
To Matteo.
To Mia.
Then back.
"Who is it?"
Nobody answered.
Luca turned toward Adrian.
"Tell me."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"The person who betrayed you..."
A pause.
"...was the person who saved you."
Luca frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Before Adrian could answer, a sound came from Luca's phone.
A new message.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
Luca opened it.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Sofia.
Alive.
Sitting in a chair.
And standing behind her...
Was a man Luca recognized.
His father.
Dead for fifteen years.
Luca stared.
"No."
Matteo stepped closer.
"What?"
Luca showed him the screen.
Matteo's expression changed.
Because the impossible had happened again.
Someone who should have been gone...
Was alive.
The message below the picture contained only one sentence.
Come home, son.
Luca did not sleep.
Nobody did.
The warehouse had become a place full of ghosts.
Every wall carried another secret.
Every person carried another lie.
But there was one thing Luca understood.
Someone wanted him to return.
Not to his mansion.
Not to his company.
Home.
The word bothered him.
Because his childhood home had been empty for years.
The Moretti estate.
The place where his father raised him.
The place where his mother disappeared.
The place where Luca learned that love and power were always connected.
They drove there before sunrise.
Luca sat in silence.
Matteo sat across from him.
For the first time in years, neither brother knew what to say.
Finally Matteo spoke.
"I should have told you."
Luca looked out the window.
"Yes."
"I thought hiding the truth would keep you alive."
"It almost killed me."
Matteo lowered his eyes.
"I know."
Luca looked at him.
"You were my brother."
"I still am."
A pause.
"I never stopped being your brother."
The words stayed between them.
Luca didn't forgive him.
Not yet.
But for the first time, he believed him.
When they reached the Moretti estate, the gates opened automatically.
Nobody touched them.
Nobody gave permission.
That was impossible.
The house had been abandoned for years.
But the lights were on.
Luca stepped out.
The same house.
The same walls.
The same place where he lost everything.
Mia held Emma's hand.
The little girl looked at the mansion.
"Is this where you grew up?"
Luca nodded.
"Yes."
"Was it happy?"
The question caught him off guard.
He looked at the windows.
At the rooms where his childhood memories lived.
"I don't know."
Emma squeezed his hand.
"Maybe you can make it happy now."
Luca looked at her.
A three-year-old child.
The only person in his life who had never lied to him.
He almost smiled.
Almost.
Then the front door opened.
By itself.
Everyone stopped.
A voice came from inside.
"Come in, Luca."
His blood turned cold.
Because he knew that voice.
His father.
They entered carefully.
The house looked untouched.
A fire burned in the fireplace.
Fresh food sat on the table.
Someone had been living here.
Recently.
Luca walked into the main hall.
A portrait of his father hung above the fireplace.
But underneath it was something new.
A photograph.
Of Luca.
As a baby.
Beside him was another child.
Matteo.
And beside them...
A third baby.
Luca stared.
"What is that?"
Mia stepped closer.
Her face changed.
Because she recognized it.
"No."
Luca looked at her.
"What?"
She whispered:
"There were never two children."
The room became silent.
Matteo looked at the photograph.
His face went pale.
Luca slowly picked it up.
Three babies.
Three names.
Three lives connected.
And written on the back was a sentence.
The third child was the one who inherited everything.
Then the lights turned off.
A door upstairs opened.
Slowly.
Footsteps began moving down the stairs.
One.
Two.
Three.
And a voice whispered:
"Luca..."
May you like
A voice he had never expected to hear again.
Because the person walking toward him was the one person who knew the truth about the third child.
