Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside His Own House

"Mr. Moretti..."

The voice echoed through the dark mansion.

Luca Moretti stood at the top of the stairs, his weapon lowered but ready.

He knew that voice.

He had heard it every morning for five years.

A voice that gave him security reports.

A voice that told him who entered his property.

A voice that promised his home was protected.

His security chief.

Adrian Vale.

The man who was supposed to keep danger away.

Not bring it inside.

Adrian stepped into the red emergency light.

His suit was perfectly arranged.

His expression calm.

Too calm.

Behind him stood two armed men.

Luca's eyes moved between them.

Then back to Adrian.

"Explain."

Adrian looked around the mansion.

At the broken security system.

At the dark hallways.

At Luca standing alone.

"You always were difficult to surprise."

Luca's expression didn't change.

"Wrong answer."

Adrian smiled slightly.

"Still the same."

Matteo stood beside Luca.

For the first time in years, the two brothers were facing the same enemy.

Adrian noticed.

And his smile disappeared.

"So the ghost finally came home."

Matteo's eyes narrowed.

"You knew."

Adrian looked at him.

"Of course I knew."

Luca turned slightly.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

Luca stepped forward.

"You knew Matteo was alive?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Cold.

Luca felt something inside him break.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Betrayal.

"You worked for me."

"I still do."

"No."

Luca shook his head.

"You worked beside me while hiding the biggest secret of my life."

Adrian looked away.

"Your life was never the only one at risk."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Where is Emma?"

Adrian's eyes moved toward the hallway.

A small movement.

Almost invisible.

But Luca saw it.

"You came for her."

Adrian didn't deny it.

Matteo stepped forward.

"You won't touch her."

Adrian laughed quietly.

"Do you really think this ends with you protecting her?"

The words made Matteo stop.

"What did you do?"

Adrian looked at him.

"I fixed the mistake you made three years ago."

Luca's eyes hardened.

"What mistake?"

Nobody answered.

And Luca hated that.

Everyone knew something.

Everyone except him.

The man who controlled one of the most powerful organizations in the city.

The man people feared.

The man who always had information.

But tonight...

He was the last person to know the truth.

"Adrian."

His voice became colder.

"You have ten seconds."

Adrian looked almost amused.

"You still think this is your house."

Luca stared at him.

"It is."

"No."

Adrian looked around.

"This stopped being your house three years ago."

The sentence hit harder than Luca expected.

Because it was true.

Three years ago, everything changed.

Matteo died.

The organization fractured.

People disappeared.

And Luca spent every day trying to rebuild what was left.

But maybe he had been rebuilding something that was already taken from him.

"Tell me who you work for."

Adrian remained silent.

"Now."

A sound came from behind Luca.

A soft click.

Luca turned.

One of Adrian's men had entered from the side hallway.

Too close.

Too fast.

Matteo reacted immediately.

He pushed Luca aside.

The man fired.

The shot hit the wall.

The mansion exploded into chaos.

Emma screamed from the safe room.

Mia shouted her name.

Luca moved instantly.

Years of survival took over.

He grabbed the attacker and slammed him against the wall.

The gun fell.

One second later, the man was unconscious.

But Luca wasn't looking at him.

He was looking toward the safe room.

Toward Emma.

Matteo was already running there.

They reached the hidden door together.

Mia stood inside.

Holding Emma.

Both were safe.

For now.

Emma saw Luca.

Then Matteo.

"Are the bad people gone?"

Nobody answered.

Because they weren't.

Not yet.

Luca looked back toward the hallway.

Adrian was gone.

The security chief had disappeared during the chaos.

That bothered him more than the attack.

Because Adrian hadn't come to win.

He had come to send a message.

Luca returned to the main hall.

The guards he trusted were finally arriving.

Too late.

Always too late.

"Lock down the mansion."

Everyone moved.

Then Luca noticed something.

A small object on the floor.

Near where Adrian had stood.

A black envelope.

No name.

No mark.

Just a symbol pressed into the paper.

A symbol Luca recognized.

His brother saw it too.

Matteo's face changed.

"You know that symbol?"

Luca picked it up.

"Yes."

"Who uses it?"

Luca didn't answer.

Because the answer was impossible.

The symbol belonged to a group that had disappeared years ago.

A group responsible for some of the darkest moments in their history.

A group everyone thought was gone.

Matteo whispered:

"They're back."

Luca opened the envelope.

Inside was one photograph.

A photograph of Emma.

Taken earlier that day.

At the laundry room.

When she was washing his shirt.

On the back of the photograph were five words.

She was never your secret.

Luca stared.

Then he saw something else.

A second line.

Written underneath.

Ask your mother.

Mia had followed them into the room.

The moment she saw the photo, she stopped.

Luca looked at her.

"What does this mean?"

Mia's face went pale.

She looked like she had been waiting for this moment for years.

"Luca..."

"Tell me."

Her lips trembled.

"I didn't tell you because I thought I was protecting Emma."

A pause.

"But I was protecting you."

Luca felt his chest tighten.

"Protecting me from what?"

Mia looked toward Emma.

Then back at him.

"From the truth about who her mother really is."

Silence.

Luca stared.

"What?"

Mia closed her eyes.

"I was never just a maid."

The room became completely still.

Matteo looked at her.

Even he seemed surprised.

Luca took one step forward.

"Who are you?"

Mia opened her eyes.

And for the first time, Luca saw something behind her fear.

Not weakness.

Not shame.

A secret she had carried alone.

"My real name is..."

The lights suddenly went out again.

Every screen in the mansion turned black.

A new message appeared on Luca's phone.

Unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

You finally found her. Now find the woman who gave birth to the monster.
