Chapter 9 - The Last Betrayal

The words were simple.

Three words written on a small piece of paper.

Bring the girl.

But Aleandro Moretti knew something important about threats.

The more someone wanted you afraid, the less they needed to write.

Real power did not require long explanations.

It only needed a few carefully chosen words.

And whoever left that message knew exactly where to strike.

Not his business.

Not his money.

Not his reputation.

Emma.

The little girl who had walked into his office with a warning nobody else had the courage to give.

The child who had seen what powerful adults ignored.

The child who had unknowingly exposed a war that had been hidden for decades.

Aleandro folded the paper slowly.

His expression remained calm.

But everyone who knew him understood what that calm meant.

It meant someone had crossed a line.

A line that could never be uncrossed.

Marco stood beside him, reading the message again.

“This was found inside your office?”

Aleandro nodded.

“Under the desk.”

Marco’s jaw tightened.

“They were here again.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

That was the question.

The same question that had followed them from the beginning.

How had someone entered the most secure place in the Moretti empire?

How had they moved through cameras, guards, and systems without leaving a trace?

Aleandro looked around the room.

Then at the empty wall where the painting had been.

“They were never breaking in.”

Marco looked at him.

“What?”

“They were already inside.”

The words settled heavily.

Because everyone understood what they meant.

The enemy was not outside the gates.

The enemy had been sitting at the table.

The penthouse was locked down within minutes.

Not with panic.

Not with visible fear.

Aleandro refused to give his enemies that satisfaction.

The staff continued moving normally.

Security remained invisible.

Every entrance was monitored.

Every employee was checked.

But there was one person Aleandro needed to speak with first.

Emma.

He found her in the library.

She was sitting on the floor with her drawings spread around her.

The moment she saw him, she stood.

“Mr. Moretti?”

Aleandro looked at her carefully.

“Emma.”

The girl noticed his expression.

Something was wrong.

“Did I do something?”

The question surprised him.

“No.”

“Then why do you look angry?”

Aleandro paused.

Because the answer was complicated.

He was angry.

But not at her.

He was angry at a world where a child had been forced to understand danger before she understood childhood.

He sat down beside her.

“You helped me.”

Emma looked confused.

“How?”

“You saw something nobody else saw.”

She looked down.

“I was just looking.”

Aleandro smiled slightly.

“That is sometimes how people find the truth.”

Emma was quiet.

Then she asked:

“Is someone mad at me?”

Aleandro looked at her.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“Someone is afraid of you.”

The girl frowned.

“Why?”

“Because you told the truth.”

Emma looked at her drawings.

“My mom always says the truth can be dangerous.”

Aleandro became still.

“Your mother said that?”

Emma nodded.

“She says sometimes people hide the truth because they think they are protecting someone.”

That sentence stayed with him.

Because it sounded familiar.

Almost exactly like Isabella.

Protecting someone.

Everyone had been using that word.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a secret.

And somehow, the truth had become the most dangerous thing in the room.

Later that evening, Isabella arrived.

This time, she did not look confident.

She did not look like the elegant woman who entered every room knowing exactly how people saw her.

She looked tired.

Worried.

Human.

Aleandro met her in the private dining room.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Finally, Isabella said:

“Is Emma safe?”

The question mattered.

Because she did not ask about herself.

She did not ask about the danger.

She asked about the child.

Aleandro noticed.

“She is.”

“Good.”

A silence followed.

Then Aleandro placed the message on the table.

Isabella read it.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“You know something.”

She looked at him.

“I was afraid this would happen.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

She looked down.

“It is a confession.”

Aleandro waited.

“My father was not the only person who knew about the plan.”

“Who else?”

Isabella hesitated.

“Someone who was close to Matteo.”

Aleandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Close how?”

“Very close.”

She took a breath.

“Someone inside the Moretti family.”

Again.

That phrase.

Inside the family.

It had followed them everywhere.

“Give me a name.”

“I cannot.”

Aleandro stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because I do not know if the person I suspect is guilty.”

“You have suspicions.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Isabella looked at him.

“Your uncle was not working alone.”

Aleandro felt the room become colder.

“Who helped him?”

“I don’t know.”

“Isabella.”

“I swear.”

She stepped closer.

“But I know one thing.”

“What?”

“The person behind this does not want you dead.”

Aleandro looked at her.

“They want something worse.”

“What?”

“They want you to destroy everything you built.”

That night, Marco discovered something.

Something that changed the investigation completely.

Aleandro was standing in his office when Marco entered.

“We found the person who accessed the security system.”

Aleandro turned.

“Who?”

Marco placed a file on the desk.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Aleandro noticed.

“Tell me.”

Marco opened the file.

“It was authorized through an old family account.”

“Whose?”

Marco looked at him.

“Your father’s.”

Silence.

Aleandro stared.

“My father has been dead for years.”

“Yes.”

“Then how?”

Marco shook his head.

“That is what we are trying to understand.”

Aleandro picked up the file.

The access records showed something impossible.

A command had been sent from a system that should no longer exist.

A system only three people knew about.

His father.

Matteo.

And Aleandro himself.

But Aleandro had never used it.

His father was dead.

Matteo was supposedly dead.

Which left only one possibility.

Someone had recreated the access.

Someone who knew everything.

Someone who had been preparing for years.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Aleandro answered.

This time, he did not speak.

The voice came immediately.

“You finally understand.”

Aleandro’s eyes hardened.

“Where is Emma?”

A pause.

Then a quiet laugh.

“You still think this is about the girl.”

Aleandro said nothing.

“She is not the prize.”

“Then what is?”

The voice became colder.

“You.”

The call ended.

Aleandro immediately turned.

“Find Emma.”

But before anyone moved, a security alarm sounded.

Not a normal alarm.

A silent emergency signal.

Marco checked his device.

His face changed.

“Sir…”

“What?”

“The east entrance.”

Aleandro moved quickly.

The camera feed appeared on the screen.

The entrance was empty.

No intruders.

No forced doors.

No movement.

Then the image changed.

A second camera.

The garden.

Emma’s drawing table.

Empty.

Aleandro froze.

Because on the table was one thing.

A yellow ribbon.

The same ribbon Emma wore every day.

Next to it was a note.

He picked it up.

Only one sentence.

The truth was always behind the painting.

Aleandro closed his eyes.

Because suddenly he understood.

They never wanted Emma.

They wanted him to believe they did.

They wanted him to move.

They wanted him to open the final door.

The final secret.

The one his father had hidden.

The one everyone had killed to protect.

Aleandro looked toward the empty wall where the painting had once hung.

Then he spoke quietly.

“Prepare the old estate.”

Marco looked at him.

“Why?”

Aleandro picked up the hidden family documents.

“Because this ends where it began.”

The Moretti family secret.

The betrayal.

The lies.

The war.

Everything led back to one place.

The house in Sicily.

The place where the painting was created.

The place where his father’s final truth was hidden.

And for the first time, Aleandro knew exactly what he was walking into.

A trap.

But also an opportunity.

Because the person who built the trap had made one mistake.

They believed Aleandro Moretti was still searching for answers.

May you like

He was not.

He was coming for the person who had spent twenty years hiding them.
