Chapter 3 - The Fiancée’s Perfect Lie

Aleandro Moretti had built his entire life around one skill.
Knowing when someone was lying.
It was not about words.
Words were easy.
Anyone could choose the right sentence. Anyone could lower their voice, soften their expression, and create a version of reality that sounded believable.
The truth was hidden somewhere else.
In the pause before an answer.
In the movement of someone's eyes.
In the way their hands reacted before their mind could control them.
That was why Aleandro had survived decades surrounded by dangerous people.
He did not listen to what people said.
He watched what they failed to hide.
And tonight, standing inside his private office, he had seen something he never expected.
A hesitation from Isabella.
The woman he planned to marry.
The woman he believed was the one person in the world who knew him completely.
The woman who had convinced him that maybe trust was not a weakness.
Maybe it was something worth fighting for.
But now there was a question he could not silence.
Was Isabella the person standing beside him?
Or was she the person standing against him?
The answer mattered more than anything.
Because a stranger could betray him.
An enemy could attack him.
But betrayal from someone he loved was different.
It did not destroy the walls around him.
It destroyed the reason he built them.
The next morning arrived without peace.
Aleandro had not slept.
Not because he was afraid.
Fear was something he had learned to control a long time ago.
He stayed awake because every hour of the night brought another possibility.
Every possibility created another question.
The hidden device sat inside a secure evidence case on his desk.
His security team had removed it carefully.
No fingerprints.
No markings.
No obvious manufacturer.
A professional job.
That bothered him.
An amateur would have left something behind.
A professional knew exactly how to disappear.
Aleandro stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, looking down at Manhattan.
The city was waking up.
Millions of people were beginning their normal lives.
Coffee shops opening.
Cars filling the streets.
People rushing toward meetings.
Nobody below knew that inside one of the most protected buildings in the city, a powerful man was questioning the people closest to him.
Behind him, his security chief, Marco Bellini, placed a tablet on the desk.
Marco had worked for the Moretti family for fifteen years.
Unlike most people around Aleandro, Marco did not flatter him.
He did not fear silence.
He respected it.
“We analyzed the device,” Marco said.
Aleandro did not turn around.
“And?”
“It was not a commercial product.”
“I assumed that.”
“It was modified.”
Aleandro slowly looked back.
“Modified how?”
“Long-range transmission. Encrypted signal. The person who installed it knew exactly what they were doing.”
“How long was it active?”
Marco hesitated.
Aleandro noticed immediately.
“Tell me.”
“We cannot know for certain.”
“That means you have an estimate.”
Marco nodded.
“Several months.”
The room became quiet.
Several months.
That changed everything.
This was not someone trying to learn one conversation.
This was someone collecting information.
Studying him.
Waiting.
Aleandro walked toward the desk.
“Several months means they heard things.”
“Yes.”
“What things?”
Marco looked uncomfortable.
“Everything that happened in this room.”
Aleandro looked at the evidence case.
His office.
His private conversations.
His plans.
His weaknesses.
Someone had been inside his world without permission.
And then another thought came.
Isabella had been here.
Alone.
She had admitted it.
But that did not prove anything.
Aleandro refused to become reckless.
Suspicion was useful.
Accusations without proof were dangerous.
“Find out who installed it,” he ordered.
Marco nodded.
“And the woman?”
Aleandro’s eyes moved slightly.
Marco did not need to say Isabella’s name.
Everyone close to Aleandro knew.
“Do not follow her.”
Marco looked surprised.
“Sir?”
“If she is involved, she will notice.”
“And if she is not?”
“Then I will not destroy her reputation because of suspicion.”
Marco nodded slowly.
That answer revealed something about Aleandro that most people never saw.
Behind the reputation.
Behind the power.
There was still a man trying to be fair.
A man trying not to become exactly like the people he had spent his life fighting.
Later that afternoon, Isabella arrived at the penthouse.
She came carrying coffee.
A small gesture.
A normal gesture.
The kind of thing she had done hundreds of times.
“I thought you might need this,” she said.
Aleandro accepted the cup.
“Thank you.”
She studied him.
“You look tired.”
“Long night.”
“Work?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Only work?”
The question sounded playful.
But Aleandro noticed the way she watched his reaction.
Testing.
Measuring.
He took a sip of coffee.
“You seem interested.”
“I am your future wife.”
“Future.”
The word hung between them.
Isabella’s smile faded slightly.
“Is that what we are now?”
Aleandro looked at her.
“What?”
“Questioning every word I say?”
There it was.
The emotional shift.
Most people would have apologized.
Most people would have tried to comfort her.
Aleandro almost did.
Almost.
But then he remembered the red light behind the painting.
“I am questioning everything.”
Her expression softened.
“Aleandro…”
“I need honesty.”
“I have always been honest with you.”
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
Aleandro leaned against the desk.
“Have you?”
Isabella stared at him.
The silence grew.
Finally, she whispered:
“Why are you asking me that?”
Because he had a device hidden behind a painting.
Because someone had invaded his office.
Because the woman he loved had looked at that painting for half a second too long.
But he said none of those things.
Instead:
“Because I have spent my whole life surrounded by people who tell me what I want to hear.”
Isabella stepped closer.
“I am not them.”
Aleandro looked at her.
“I hope not.”
That hurt her.
He saw it.
Real pain.
And for a moment, he hated himself.
Because maybe he was wrong.
Maybe fear was making him see enemies everywhere.
Maybe Isabella truly was innocent.
But then she said something that made him freeze.
“You found something, didn’t you?”
Aleandro said nothing.
The silence answered for him.
Isabella immediately realized her mistake.
Only a fraction of a second.
But enough.
Aleandro’s eyes sharpened.
“How did you know?”
She looked away.
“I guessed.”
“No.”
His voice became quieter.
“You did not guess.”
Isabella took a breath.
“Aleandro…”
“How did you know?”
The woman who always had an answer suddenly had none.
And that frightened him more than any confession.
Because uncertainty from Isabella was something he had never seen before.
Finally, she sat down.
Her confidence disappeared.
“Aleandro, there are things you do not understand.”
“That is usually what people say before they reveal something.”
“I am trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
She looked at him.
From the fear in her eyes, Aleandro knew one thing.
Whatever secret existed was bigger than a hidden microphone.
Bigger than betrayal.
Bigger than a wedding.
“You have enemies,” Isabella whispered.
“I know.”
“No. You think you know.”
Aleandro became still.
She continued.
“Your family has spent generations creating enemies. People who lost everything because of your name. People who have waited years for a chance to hurt you.”
“And you know these people?”
Her silence was enough.
Aleandro stepped closer.
“Who are they?”
“I cannot tell you.”
“Cannot?”
“Not yet.”
That answer angered him.
Not because she refused.
Because she sounded afraid.
For the first time, Isabella was not acting like someone hiding something.
She looked like someone trapped by something.
“Isabella.”
She looked up.
“Did you put the device behind the painting?”
The question was direct.
No emotion.
No anger.
Just truth.
Her eyes widened.
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
Aleandro watched her carefully.
This time, he believed her.
Not because she said no.
Because her reaction was real.
She was shocked.
Genuinely shocked.
But that created another problem.
If Isabella did not place the device…
Who did?
And why did Isabella know something was coming?
Before either of them could speak, Emma appeared at the doorway.
The little girl looked nervous.
Aleandro immediately noticed.
“What happened?”
Emma held something in her small hand.
A folded piece of paper.
“I found this near the painting.”
Aleandro walked toward her.
He took the paper.
His expression changed when he saw the handwriting.
It was not random.
It was a message.
Four simple words.
He knows you found it.
Aleandro looked up.
The room went silent.
Isabella’s face lost all color.
Emma looked between them.
And for the first time, Aleandro understood.
The hidden device was not the beginning of the danger.
It was a warning.
Someone knew he had discovered the truth.
May you like
And whoever that person was…
They were already watching his next move.
