Chapter 7 - The Final Trap Behind the Canvas

Aleandro Moretti had spent his entire life believing he understood betrayal.
He had seen it in the eyes of men who shook his hand while planning his downfall.
He had heard it in the voices of people who promised loyalty while secretly preparing to leave.
He had learned that betrayal rarely arrived with violence.
It arrived quietly.
A delayed answer.
A hidden message.
A door opened for someone who should never have been allowed inside.
But this was different.
Because the person who had betrayed him had not only entered his home.
They had entered his mind.
The photograph remained on his desk.
A picture of Isabella standing in front of the painting.
Taken from inside his office.
A photograph that should not exist.
A photograph that proved someone had been there.
Watching.
Waiting.
Aleandro stared at it for several minutes.
The words written on the back repeated in his head.
You are protecting the wrong woman.
The message was designed to create doubt.
That was obvious.
But the dangerous part was not the message itself.
The dangerous part was that it worked.
Because now Aleandro was forced to consider a possibility he hated.
What if Isabella was not the victim?
What if she was the distraction?
What if every confession, every tear, every moment of fear had been part of a larger plan?
He hated that thought.
Not because it was impossible.
Because it was possible.
And that was enough.
The first thing Aleandro did was call Marco.
No explanation.
No details.
Just one sentence.
“Come to the office.”
When Marco arrived, he immediately noticed something was wrong.
Aleandro was standing near the painting.
The same painting that started everything.
The same painting that had revealed the hidden device.
The same painting that now felt like a doorway into a war that had been waiting decades to begin.
“What happened?” Marco asked.
Aleandro handed him the photograph.
Marco studied it.
His expression changed slowly.
“This was taken inside the office?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
Marco looked toward the painting.
“Someone was here recently.”
Aleandro nodded.
“Someone who knew where to stand.”
Marco looked back at him.
“Do you think Isabella took it?”
Aleandro did not answer.
That silence told Marco everything.
“You do not trust her.”
Aleandro looked at the photograph.
“I trust what I can prove.”
Marco understood.
That was how Aleandro survived.
Feelings could not protect him.
Evidence could.
“We need to find out when this photograph was taken.”
“Yes.”
“And who had access.”
“Yes.”
Marco hesitated.
“There is something else.”
Aleandro looked at him.
“What?”
“Your security system recorded a signal last night.”
Aleandro became still.
“Why did you not tell me?”
“Because we were analyzing it.”
“What signal?”
Marco placed a tablet on the desk.
A map appeared.
“The device was not the only thing transmitting.”
Aleandro looked closer.
“What does that mean?”
“It means whoever installed the microphone left another transmitter.”
“Where?”
Marco pointed.
The location was inside the penthouse.
Aleandro’s eyes narrowed.
“Find it.”
The search lasted forty minutes.
Forty minutes of silence.
Security teams moved through the penthouse carefully.
No panic.
No obvious reaction.
Because Aleandro refused to let whoever was watching know they had found the trail.
Every room was checked.
Every object was examined.
Every hidden space was scanned.
Then one of the security men called from upstairs.
“Sir.”
Aleandro immediately walked toward the voice.
The man stood in the hallway outside his office.
Holding a small device.
Not the same as the microphone.
This one was smaller.
Almost impossible to notice.
Attached beneath a wooden table.
Aleandro stared at it.
Another device.
Another violation.
Another reminder that someone had been closer than he imagined.
Marco looked at him.
“They wanted more than conversations.”
Aleandro nodded.
“They wanted reactions.”
“They wanted to know how you respond.”
“Yes.”
Marco looked serious.
“They are studying you.”
Aleandro looked back toward his office.
“No.”
A pause.
“They are preparing me.”
That night, Aleandro did something unexpected.
He invited Isabella back.
Not because he trusted her.
Not completely.
Because he needed answers.
And because he realized something important.
If Isabella was truly part of the plan, she was the only person who could explain it.
If she was not…
Then she was also in danger.
She arrived an hour later.
The moment she entered the office, she noticed the atmosphere.
The painting was gone.
The security presence.
The silence.
She looked at Aleandro.
“What happened?”
Aleandro placed the photograph on the desk.
Isabella saw it.
Her face changed immediately.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
And that was enough.
Aleandro noticed.
“You know this.”
Isabella looked away.
“I know what it means.”
“Then explain.”
She remained silent.
“Isabella.”
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“I was hoping this day would never come.”
“That is not an answer.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“It is a warning.”
Aleandro crossed his arms.
“From who?”
“My father.”
The name changed the air between them.
“Victor?”
She nodded.
“He knew this would happen.”
“How?”
“Because he knew the person behind it.”
Aleandro stepped closer.
“Who?”
Isabella hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Someone inside your family.”
The words hit harder than any weapon.
Aleandro stared at her.
“That is impossible.”
“No.”
Her voice was calm.
“It is exactly why they succeeded.”
He said nothing.
Isabella continued.
“The person behind this knows your family better than anyone. They know your security. They know your habits. They know your weaknesses.”
Aleandro looked away.
His mind immediately searched through possibilities.
Family.
Employees.
Allies.
People who had been around for years.
“Who?”
“I do not know.”
“Isabella.”
“I swear.”
She stepped closer.
“But my father told me one thing.”
“What?”
“He said the enemy would never attack you directly.”
Aleandro waited.
“They would make you destroy yourself.”
The sentence stayed in the air.
Because it was true.
The hidden device.
The messages.
The photographs.
They were not meant to hurt him physically.
They were meant to make him doubt everyone.
To isolate him.
To make him weak.
And it was working.
Later that night, Emma came into the office again.
Aleandro was not surprised.
Somehow, the little girl had become the only person who appeared when secrets were revealed.
She held another piece of paper.
Aleandro immediately noticed her expression.
“What happened?”
Emma looked worried.
“I heard someone talking.”
“Where?”
“In the hallway.”
“When?”
“Before I came here.”
Aleandro knelt down.
“What did they say?”
Emma looked frightened.
“They said my name.”
His expression changed.
“Your name?”
She nodded.
“They said…”
She swallowed.
“They said, ‘The girl knows too much.’”
The room became cold.
Alejandro stood slowly.
For the first time, the danger felt different.
Before, it was about him.
His power.
His empire.
His secrets.
Now it was about Emma.
A six-year-old child.
Someone innocent.
Someone who had never asked to become part of this.
Aleandro looked at Marco.
“Double the security.”
Marco nodded.
“And find who said that.”
Aleandro looked toward the dark hallway.
His expression hardened.
Because whoever was behind this had made one mistake.
They thought Emma was a weakness.
They thought protecting her would distract him.
They were wrong.
Emma was the reason he would stop running after shadows.
She was the reason he would find the person behind them.
Near midnight, Aleandro returned to his office alone.
The painting was gone.
The wall was empty.
But something bothered him.
A feeling.
A memory.
Emma’s first words.
Look behind the painting, sir.
She had not said:
Someone hid something there.
She had not said:
There is a device.
She had said:
Look behind the painting.
As if she knew there was something waiting.
Aleandro walked toward the empty wall.
Then he noticed something.
A small mark.
Behind where the painting had hung.
Not a scratch.
Not damage.
A symbol.
One his father used decades ago.
A symbol that meant only one thing.
Trust no one.
Aleandro touched the mark.
And suddenly, everything became clear.
The device.
The messages.
The photograph.
They were not the real trap.
They were bait.
Someone wanted him to look behind the painting.
Because something else was hidden there.
Something they needed him to find.
Aleandro stepped back.
For the first time, he smiled.
Not because he was happy.
Because he finally understood the game.
The enemy had spent months watching him.
Studying him.
Planning every move.
But they had forgotten one thing.
Aleandro Moretti was not a man who stayed trapped.
He was a man who hunted.
He picked up his phone.
“Marco.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Prepare everything.”
“For what?”
Aleandro looked at the empty wall.
“The truth.”
A pause.
“And when we find it…”
His eyes hardened.
“Everyone who lied to me will answer.”
May you like
Outside, the city slept.
But inside the Moretti empire, the war had finally begun.
