Chapter 4 - The Hidden Recording

The message was only four words.
He knows you found it.
But those four words carried more weight than a hundred threats.
Aleandro Moretti stared at the piece of paper in his hand, reading it again and again as if the meaning might change.
It did not.
Someone knew.
Not only had someone placed a surveillance device inside his office.
Not only had someone listened to his private conversations.
They had also been watching closely enough to know the exact moment he discovered it.
That meant one thing.
The person behind this was not far away.
They were close.
Very close.
The room felt smaller.
The walls that had always represented power now felt like they were closing in.
Aleandro slowly folded the paper.
His face remained calm.
Years of controlling dangerous situations had taught him one important lesson.
Never let your enemy see when they have succeeded.
Fear was information.
Anger was information.
Panic was information.
And Aleandro Moretti did not give away information for free.
Across the room, Isabella remained silent.
She looked at the note.
Then at Aleandro.
Then at Emma.
The little girl stood near the doorway, holding her hands together nervously.
She did not understand the full meaning of what was happening.
But she understood enough.
Adults were hiding something.
And for some reason, she had become part of it.
Aleandro crouched slightly so he was closer to her.
“Emma.”
The girl looked at him.
“Where exactly did you find this?”
She pointed toward the painting.
“Behind the frame.”
Aleandro glanced at the wall.
The painting had already been removed.
The place where the device had been hidden was now empty.
But the message had been waiting.
Like someone wanted him to find it.
Like someone wanted him to know they were not afraid.
“Did anyone see you?”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
The girl thought carefully.
Then nodded.
“I heard footsteps.”
Aleandro’s eyes narrowed.
“When?”
“Before I came here.”
The room became quiet.
“Whose footsteps?”
Emma looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Aleandro stood.
He did not like unknown variables.
Unknown variables were how people died.
He turned toward Isabella.
“You need to leave.”
The words surprised her.
“What?”
“Take Emma with you.”
Isabella frowned.
“You think I am dangerous?”
“No.”
“Then why are you sending me away?”
“Because this is no longer about a device.”
Aleandro walked toward the desk.
“This is about someone sending a message.”
Isabella watched him carefully.
“And you think they are coming here?”
Aleandro looked out at the city.
“No.”
A pause.
“They are already here.”
Ten minutes later, the penthouse was locked down.
Not visibly.
Aleandro hated obvious security.
Obvious security told enemies where the walls were.
Instead, he activated the systems hidden throughout the building.
Silent cameras.
Encrypted scanners.
Private security positioned where nobody would notice.
The world outside continued normally.
But inside the Moretti penthouse, every movement was being measured.
Marco Bellini returned quickly.
The moment he entered the office, he noticed the atmosphere.
Something had happened.
“What is it?”
Aleandro handed him the note.
Marco read it.
His expression changed.
“That was inside the frame?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Today.”
Marco looked at the message again.
“They knew.”
Aleandro nodded.
“Exactly.”
Marco lowered the paper.
“Then whoever installed the device had access to the painting afterward.”
“Or they never left.”
That possibility was worse.
Marco looked around the office.
“You think someone inside the house is working with them?”
Aleandro did not answer immediately.
Because the answer was obvious.
“Yes.”
Marco became serious.
“Who?”
Aleandro looked toward the door.
Everyone.
That was the problem.
In his world, everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a history.
Everyone had something they wanted.
But one name kept returning.
Isabella.
Not because he believed she was guilty.
Because she knew something.
And secrets were dangerous.
Especially secrets involving him.
That evening, Aleandro made a decision.
A decision that would hurt him.
But necessary decisions were rarely comfortable.
He asked Isabella to meet him in the private garden terrace.
The rain had stopped.
The city below was covered in wet reflections.
Isabella stood near the railing wearing a dark coat over her dress.
For a moment, she looked like the woman he fell in love with.
Not a suspect.
Not a mystery.
Just Isabella.
And that made everything harder.
“You wanted to talk,” she said.
Aleandro nodded.
“Yes.”
“About the message?”
“Yes.”
She looked away.
“I was afraid you would find out.”
Aleandro became still.
“Find out what?”
She closed her eyes briefly.
“I knew someone was watching you.”
The admission landed heavily.
Not because he was shocked.
Because hearing it confirmed his worst fear.
“How long?”
“I do not know.”
“You knew someone was watching me, but you said nothing?”
“I tried to protect you.”
“By hiding the truth?”
Isabella looked at him.
“You would have reacted exactly like this.”
“Like what?”
“Like someone preparing for war.”
Aleandro stepped closer.
“Because someone declared war on me.”
“No.”
Her voice became emotional.
“Because someone declared war on everyone around you.”
That sentence stopped him.
Everyone around him.
Not just him.
“What do you mean?”
Isabella hesitated.
Then whispered:
“The device was not placed there to steal information.”
Aleandro stared at her.
“Then why?”
“To watch who you trust.”
A cold feeling moved through him.
“What?”
Isabella looked toward the city.
“There are people who want to destroy you, Aleandro. But they know attacking you directly will fail.”
“So they attack my relationships.”
“Yes.”
“They watch me.”
“Yes.”
“They manipulate people around me.”
“Yes.”
Aleandro studied her.
“And you?”
She looked back.
“I was supposed to be one of them.”
The silence that followed was absolute.
Aleandro did not move.
“What does that mean?”
Isabella’s eyes filled with regret.
“My family has connections you do not know about.”
Aleandro’s expression hardened.
“Your family?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
She looked away.
“I cannot tell you yet.”
His jaw tightened.
“Still protecting secrets.”
“I am trying to protect you.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it is true.”
Aleandro looked at the woman standing in front of him.
A woman carrying information she refused to share.
A woman who might be protecting him.
Or controlling him.
“How did they get close enough to place the device?”
Isabella swallowed.
“Someone gave them access.”
“Who?”
She did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Aleandro turned away.
For years, he had built an empire by knowing exactly who stood beside him.
Now he realized he might have never known anyone at all.
Later that night, Aleandro sat alone in his office.
The painting was still leaning against the wall.
The empty space behind it bothered him.
Because it represented something larger.
A hidden truth.
A secret waiting to be discovered.
He looked at the evidence case containing the surveillance device.
Then he looked at the security footage.
His team had reviewed every camera.
Every entrance.
Every hallway.
But there was one problem.
The footage showed nothing.
No suspicious person.
No unusual movement.
No stranger entering the office.
Whoever installed the device had not broken into his world.
They had been invited.
Aleandro leaned back.
Then he noticed something.
A small detail.
Something everyone else had missed.
He rewound the footage from the night before.
The hallway outside his office.
11:43 PM.
Emma walking toward the office.
Then three minutes later…
Someone else appeared.
Not entering.
Leaving.
Aleandro paused the video.
The person was mostly hidden.
Only a hand was visible.
A hand holding something.
A ring.
A familiar ring.
Aleandro stared at the screen.
His heartbeat slowed.
Because he knew that ring.
Everyone in the Moretti household knew it.
The person on the footage was not a stranger.
It was someone who had been welcomed into his home.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had every reason to be near the painting.
Aleandro reached for his phone.
Before he could call Marco, another message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
You are looking in the wrong direction.
Aleandro stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Ask your fiancée what she was promised.
For the first time in years, Aleandro Moretti felt something he rarely allowed himself to feel.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Betrayal.
Because the person who had been watching him knew exactly where to strike.
They did not attack his body.
They attacked his trust.

And now Aleandro had to discover the truth before the woman he loved became either his greatest enemy…
or the only person who could save him.
