Chapter 6 - The Girl Who Was Never Claire Bennett

The bedroom door opened.
Claire turned slowly.
Her hands were still holding the old wooden box.
The photograph inside was pressed against her chest.
For a second, she thought Adrian had followed her.
But it wasn't Adrian.
A figure stood in the doorway.
A shadow.
Watching.
Claire immediately moved in front of Lily.
"Who are you?"
The person didn't answer.
The hallway light flickered.
Then the figure stepped forward.
It was one of the estate employees.
Someone Claire had seen almost every day.
Someone who had served meals.
Cleaned rooms.
Smiled politely.
But now his face was different.
Cold.
Empty.
"Put the box down, Claire."
Her heart dropped.
Because he didn't call her Mrs. Bennett.
He didn't call her by her name.
He said it like he knew she wasn't really Claire.
Lily grabbed her mother's hand.
"Mommy..."
The man looked at the child.
And something in his expression changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
"You weren't supposed to find that yet."
Claire's voice shook.
"What is inside this box?"
The man didn't answer.
Instead, he took one step closer.
Claire reached behind her.
Searching for anything she could use to protect Lily.
Then a voice came from behind him.
"Take another step."
The man stopped.
Adrian Moretti stood at the end of the hallway.
A gun in his hand.
Marco beside him.
The air changed instantly.
The employee looked at Adrian.
"You always were too late."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"Who sent you?"
The man smiled.
"You still think this is about you."
Adrian moved closer.
"No."
His voice became colder.
"It's about her."
His eyes moved to Claire.
The man looked toward the box.
"She was never supposed to remember."
Claire froze.
"Remember what?"
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in the hallway knew.
The answer was inside that box.
Five minutes later, the man was gone.
Not escaped.
Not because Adrian allowed it.
Because the moment the lights returned, he had disappeared through a hidden passage behind the servants’ hallway.
Another secret inside his own house.
Another person who knew more about his estate than he did.
Adrian hated that.
He hated not knowing.
But what bothered him more was the box.
It sat on the table in his study.
Nobody touched it.
Not yet.
Claire sat beside Lily.
Marco stood near the window.
Evan guarded the door.
And Adrian stared at the wooden box like it was a weapon.
"Open it."
Claire looked at him.
"You don't want to know what's inside?"
Adrian looked at her.
"I've spent fifteen years looking for answers."
He paused.
"Now I'm afraid of finding them."
That was the first honest thing Claire had heard from him.
She slowly opened the box.
Inside were documents.
A small necklace.
A hospital bracelet.
And another photograph.
Claire picked up the bracelet.
Her fingers started shaking.
Because the name written on it wasn't Claire Bennett.
It was a different name.
A name she had never heard.
But somehow felt familiar.
"Who am I?"
Nobody answered.
Marco looked away.
Adrian noticed.
"You know."
Marco stayed silent.
"Marco."
His brother finally spoke.
"Yes."
Claire looked at him.
"You knew?"
Marco closed his eyes.
"I knew the name."
"What does that mean?"
"It means Daniel wasn't the only one protecting you."
Claire felt like the room was spinning.
"My whole life is a lie?"
Adrian watched her.
And for the first time, he saw something familiar.
Not in her face.
In her pain.
The same confusion he had felt when Marco disappeared.
The same feeling of discovering your entire reality had been built on missing pieces.
"What was my real name?" Claire whispered.
Marco looked at the photograph.
Then at Adrian.
"We need to tell her everything."
Adrian nodded.
"Start."
Fifteen years ago.
Before Adrian became the man everyone feared.
Before Marco disappeared.
Before Daniel Bennett died.
There was another family connected to the Morettis.
A family that handled information.
Secrets.
Records.
People who wanted to disappear.
Their name had been erased.
But one child survived.
Claire.
Or whoever she really was.
"Your father discovered something," Marco explained.
Claire listened silently.
"He found out someone was planning to destroy both families."
"Who?"
"We don't know."
Adrian looked at him.
"You don't know?"
Marco shook his head.
"Because everyone involved was killed or disappeared."
Claire touched the necklace from the box.
"And my parents?"
Marco looked down.
"They died protecting you."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was told they abandoned me."
Adrian became still.
"What?"
Claire looked at him.
"That's what I grew up believing."
Marco shook his head.
"No."
His voice softened.
"They didn't abandon you."
He pointed at the necklace.
"They hid you."
Claire stared.
"Why?"
"Because someone was looking for the heir."
The room became silent.
Adrian looked at Marco.
"Heir?"
Marco nodded.
"The person who could expose everything."
Claire looked confused.
"I don't understand."
Marco looked toward Lily.
"Your daughter found the symbol because she inherited it."
Claire immediately pulled Lily closer.
"No."
Adrian stepped forward.
"Explain."
Marco looked at the drawing.
"The symbol isn't a threat."
He paused.
"It's a protection mark."
Adrian stared.
"For who?"
Marco answered quietly.
"For the last person who can reveal the truth."
Everyone looked at Claire.
That night, Adrian couldn't sleep.
Too many questions.
Too many connections.
Claire.
Daniel.
Marco.
The symbol.
Lily.
Everything led back to one secret.
Someone had planned this years ago.
Someone had moved pieces into place.
And Adrian had unknowingly opened his door to them.
He went downstairs.
The mansion was quiet.
Too quiet.
He entered the study.
The old photograph from the box was still on the table.
He picked it up.
The picture showed Claire as a baby.
But there was something else.
A person standing behind her parents.
Someone partially hidden.
Adrian brought the photo closer.
Then froze.
Because he recognized the person.
It wasn't a stranger.
It wasn't an enemy.
It was someone who had been beside him for years.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who knew every secret in the Moretti organization.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Adrian answered.
No greeting.
Only a voice.
"You finally found her."
Adrian's grip tightened.
"Who is this?"
The voice laughed softly.
"You still don't understand, Adrian."
"Understand what?"
"The girl you protected today..."
A pause.
"She wasn't the secret."
Adrian looked toward the stairs.
Toward Lily's room.
The voice continued.
"The secret was the person protecting her."
The call ended.
Adrian immediately turned.
Because behind him, on the desk, a new message had appeared on the old family archive computer.
Someone had accessed the files.
The screen showed one line.
CLAIRE BENNETT'S TRUE IDENTITY: FOUND.
Adrian stepped closer.
Then the file opened by itself.
And the first photograph appeared.
It showed Claire as a child.
Standing beside another little girl who looked exactly like her...
A second child everyone believed had died...
May you like
The file name appeared on the screen:
THE TWO HEIRS PROJECT.
